You don't have to use itunes.. there are third party programs that are still out there that were out before itunes for windows came out. And if you downloaded all your songs from kazaa good luck navigating your ipod.. it uses the id3 tags to navigate and most people dont use id3 tags correctly.

What is an id3 tag?

they are identification tags. Used to tag (name) the files from within the file. if an mp3 has a filename "ok.mp3" but has id tags, the player would read the info.

devices like ipods and other players (hardware / software) use these id tags to display the song info. If the id tages aren't present, then most players just show the file name.

A little off the topic of the thread, but is there anything portable that plays .shn, .flac or .ape? Would like to bring along concerts without having to reformat them.

I'm still trying to find a viable location to buy my ipod mini. Forget about ebay, the prices are just outrageously inflated. Local shops like best buy, JandR and circuit city all are sold out. It's virtually impossible to nab one of these guys.

CompUsa carried the regular ipods last time I was there a while back. Maybe they carry the minis as well.

Yes, there are other Linux hacks.... the one refered early on in this thread is from me and is in relation to unmasking that hidden directory -- SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO DO IF YOU WANT TO BE FREE from iTUNES....

Be free from iTunes? What the heck is wrong with iTunes? I personally find it to be a much better player than WMP or Winamp..

So basically I have to use iTunes to transger my songs the ipod? Doesn't sound that bad.
It's not bad at all...iTunes is a good program. It works with your iPod, it's free, And needs no hacks to get working..What more do you need?

Nothing wrong with itunes.... IF you want to run it. But if you want to be free from it and if you want to simply drag and drop your music from within your file manager, then the iPoad is not the best route to go.
