I think new MBP will be a silent release on the 19th. Seems reasonable. So if you can wait two more weeks....

Yea.. I can wait.. just getting ancy. Stuff keeps getting slower and slower on my machine.. I'm about to do a reformat, or some user account maintenance.. but wanted to see what kind of performance is gained via a Core i7. We shall see..

Also, I'm very excited about iPhoneOS 4.. I'm on TMobile, so hopefully it'll be jailbroken pretty quickly.

geezes, do you do video work or something on your macbook pro? it's a 2.5ghz C2D, it shouldn't be "slow"

I work with a lot of RAW images from my DSLR (12mp, Nikon D700). Plus I do a lot of Photoshop work, and web application testing. So I end up running Windows + OS X a lot.

I think a lot of my slowdown is RAM related, as I don't remember having these issues before I started using multiple programs at once. It's not unusual for me to have.. OmniFocus, Yojimbo, 1Password, Adium, Entourage, Safari, TextMate, Photoshop, Transmit, Parallels, and iTunes.. all open at the same time. It can just get really slow.

Your 4GB of RAM is not enough for all that. You probably need at least 8GB of RAM for all the stuff you're running, especially with Parallels. A new MBP is probably not going to help if you also get 4GB of RAM with it.

Yea, that's what I've been thinking. Was trying to wait to get a whole new machine with 8GB, rather than just upgrade the RAM. But if the new machines aren't out in the next few weeks.. I'll probably go ahead and grab the RAM.

But anyway, back to iPhone OS 4.. WHOO!

Is this gonna be an "event" that'll be livecast anywhere? Not like Engadget liveblogs, that was painful to try to follow along with, the Ipad reveal there were actually a few sites doing a webcast from in the audience. Anything like that going on this time?

WANT: Multitasking, wireless sync, tethering (not likely), flash support, more bluetooth functions, file management.

DO NOT WANT: unified inbox, home screen widgets

WANT:
- Multitasking
- New Notification System
- Update to Messages (adopt a system like BiteSMS)
- Wireless Sync (for updating content and firmware)
- Updated look to the OS (I'm kinda tired of the way everything looks.. I'd like to see either some background support, or maybe a little tweak to the whole UI)

INDIFFERENT ABOUT:
- Unified Inbox
- Flash support
- Tethering
- Widgets

Can't think of much more that I'd want, honestly.. my iPhone already does so much more than I really need. 😀;

Want:
Multitasking
Wireless sync
Advanced software install (aka bypass app store for advanced users)
A drop in the yearly developer costs
AT&T to support tethering
iChat

What I'll get.

Probably none of those.

All I could really ask for:
- wireless sync (really wanting for an ipod touch, wirelessly sync music to car = awesome)
- combined inbox (or a better way to view all mail at once)
- maybe at&t tethering... for free plsthx?

I don't think wireless sync is ready yet. There's not enough people with high quality routers and ATT is not ready for the traffic. I can see Apple releasing printing support for the iPhone utilizing the Airport Routers.

My take is that we'll see a more polished OS. Revamped features on mail, sms, camera, youtube, etc. And other features will put other other "caught up" smartphones out of the game.

/ end analyst predictions... sleep time

I'm not even looking for OTA sync, all I want to be able to do is sync with iTunes on my own wifi network and not have to use a USB cable.

I'm almost positive anyone asking for wireless sync is talking about sync over wifi, syncing over GPRS would be.. inefficient and insecure.

Hell, the protocols are already there, they just need to turn it on.

Can't think of much that they could include in 4.0 that I don't already have in my JB 3.1.2. I would like some GPS or network based profiles for ringers, notifications etc. But that alone won't tempt me to upgrade. I am really happy with my phone right now.

I don't need multitasking all that much, but I can use backgrounder if I need to.
I don't rely on the standard SMS app .. I use biteSMS and love it
Lockinfo for the Lockscreen (I can reply to SMS and Mail right from the lockscreen now)
I theme my phone using winterboard. Illumine is excellent and very light. Does not slow the phone down at all.

I get that JB'ing isn't for everyone, but most everything that peeps want is already available and under YOUR control .. not Apple. So you can set it up the way you want. I'm sure some peeps can be intimidated by the process, but it's very simple. As is installing the apps. etc.

Didn't mean to derail this thread, so my apologies to the OP.

Here are some of the packages I use on my phone that require JB:
Activator - I can use gestures on the screen to launch apps
backgrounder - multitasking
bitesms - replacement sms app
Five Icon Dock and SB - more icons per screen
Lockinfo with Lockweather, Clockhide, WeatherIcon and 2do PLugins
PopUp Blocker - get rid of all the annoying popups and better privacy
Notifier - gives me status icons for sms, mail, phone, IM etc
SBSettings - quick access to toggles for BT, GPS, antirotation etc.

Jailbreaking always drained my battery like a beast....so I typically stayed away from it, since I got on AT&T's network.

I was concerned about that as well .. my phone has been jailbroken for a while and I have not noticed any measurable change in battery life. What I have noticed, is that I use my phone a lot more ... checking weather on the lockscreen, that sort of thing. So if my battery life is reduced, it's because I am using it more.

I'm not trying to turn this into a jailbreak thread. I understand peoples concern and what works for me doesn't always work for someone else .. Any updates that Apple makes would surely also effect battery life .. things like multitasking, updating weather on the lockscreen every x min .. etc.

They better be releasing the update today too, I'll be pissed if they give us the "This should be available in the next few months" nonsense.

I'd be surprised if you got something other than that ... I don't see this being released for a couple months at least.

That essentially leads right up to the next gen iPhone, so why even bother with this event at all?... unless... maybe this isn't really an OS event after all.... Hmmmm.. 😉

They have always built the hype and given devs time to build out new apps with the new features that they've announced. I don't foresee them releasing a build to the public until the devs have had sufficient testing time. So I'm about 99.99% positive it'll be released in June at WWDC, like last year.

And, true, Need4Speed.. I do jailbreak and most all of my needs are met that way, but I like to have official means of doing so, so I don't have to rely on the JB team to get things working when new builds come out. Although now that I unlock my phone as well.. I'm pretty much stuck with JB builds only.
