It's called Sparrow, and it's available now in the App Store for $2.99.

iTunes link:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sparrow/id492573565?mt=8

The catch is... due to recent fiascos about the privacy issues, this email client does not support Push Notifications at the moment. The other catch is... you can only attach photos for now. But at least you won't have to go into the Photo Library to attach things before composing an email anymore, so this is pretty neat stuff. I am sure quite a number of people are looking for a way to properly do this like with all other desktop (and Android) email clients.

You can read more about why push notification is not available here:
http://www.sparrowmailapp.com/push.php

Overall, I think it's worth noting because Apple allowed it. Looks like App Store policies are relaxing to allow more quality apps in that could enhance the default ones. A welcome direction indeed!

Still not worth it until Push is there. I know you mentioned it already, but that will prevent me from purchasing it 100%.

Yeah, I know. The main point is more that Apple relaxed its policies enough for an email client to slip through, so perhaps we can start expecting more later on... or Google may surprise us with a true offline GMail app.

I wish Google would fix their app. It's so bare boned and just... bleh in comparison to Android. I understand I'm on an Apple device, but my email is and always will be Gmail.

Until Sparrow gets push, I'm staying away as well. I need to have push in order to function properly.

And don't give me any B.S. regarding any "reasonable expectations" to insert pictures while typing a message.

yes it is, it is reasonable expectation that you can insert picture or other file as you are typing message.

I guess I have just gotten use to it, like many of the differences between non-mobile and mobile computing.

Is this really an issue for a lot of people?

It's more linear if you can reply to a current on-going email thread and be able to attach photos or other documents as necessary.

The way it is now on iOS, it's fairly hard and complicated to reply to an ongoing thread of email with photo attachment, if not impossible.

Of course, it's not something that occurs on a regular basis (at least not to me), so I don't believe the "issue" is as overblown as reported. It's just nice that we are getting more choice.

There are a lot of mobile computing solutions (outside of iOS) that offer simple ways to attach files to e-mails.
