Aspect ratios aren't hardcoded into iOS. However, some lazy programmers will design their interfaces assuming this is the case.

When the iPhone 5 came out, all I had to do was recompile my apps with the new startup screen and they worked fine in 16:9, 3:2, and 3:4.

PIE controls isn't a real replacement for buttons. People tend to like it because it's "cool." But honestly if you want a button, it should be there. I tried on my N4 and it just screws with the screen protector. Even on my N10 which has no protector, it's somewhat useful because of how hard it is to get to the bottom bar, but even then PIE isn't a clean solution. For phones it's far easier to use the soft buttons over the PIE buttons. I see it as a gimmick.

Soft or hard, both are fine, but look at how the N4 does it. Not only do you have soft buttons taking away screen real estate, you have a giant bottom bezel. At least Samsung uses the bezel for hardware buttons.

I don't think it does. It's either 1x or 2x the pixels, whereas Android it can be any multiplier.

The advantage for iOS is that the scaling is cleaner, but limited.

I've used two hands (one to hold, the other to peck at the keyboard) since touchscreens were put on phones. It has nothing to do with the size of the screen.

I guess what he's saying is one hand is holding while the other hand interacts with the phone. With smaller phones you can do it all with your thumb. At a certain point the phone becomes too large for your thumb to navigate effectively. The Note is certainly a phone where that happens.

I can navigate just with my thumb fine, I just prefer to use both hands and have even with smaller phones than iPhones.

Same here. Even with my tiny screened 4S I pretty much use two hands all of the time, at least when surfing or typing. It seems that for some people however one handed navigation trumps every other feature you could possibly list.

right, it's funny to nickpick when logic dictates that with a bigger screen, one would need two hands... whos to say Apple wont create a wider screen in their next iteration of the iPhone? or does that go against the "Mac-ness" of it? who knows?

I think the whole argument is a little silly honestly. I mean, does anyone use their phone exclusively one handed or two handed? When I am skipping a music track for example, chances are I am doing that one handed. If I am writing an email or surfing the web then I am using two hands. I guess if a phone was made in such a way that I was forced to ALWAYS use only one hand or only two hands that might be a little annoying. I have not had the chance to use a really big phone like a Note, but I have used my wife's Galaxy 3 enough to know that I can still do lots of things with one hand if I have to.

The nice thing about physical buttons is you don't have to look at the device to use them. I Jailbroke my iPhone 4 and setup my home + volume buttons to where I could do about 8 things without looking at the phone. PIE's interesting but it's a pita to use sometimes. And it's definitely not comparable to an actual button because you can't use it without looking at the screen.

I use one hand. That's kind of the whole reason smartphones are portrait-oriented by default.
