I just now went to the ATT website store to buy the SGS2 and it popped up 1 warning saying that the SGS2 requires a data plan, 1 warning that the iphone unlimited data plan was not compatible, and 1 warning that if I switched plans I could not switch back. It also had a message saying 50% of data users use less than 200 mb, and 94% use less than 2 GB. So at least it is nice that they are being upfront and clear about the matter.

I assume the reason why I can't keep the grandfathered plan is because it is only compatible with iphones...
People on XDA have been doing this fine perfectly for years without any trouble.
Call an AT&T rep.

i've been waiting for 6 months, I'm so tired of waiting.

Fair enough, in that case I would probably just go for it. Samsung is usualy pretty good abut updating their international models so you shouldn't have to wait to long for ICS on the Galaxy S2.

so guys, what's the deal?

pick up SGS2 today or wait for this 10/11 announcement from Samsung?

Wait until 10/11. If the Prime is going live by the end of Oct, wait. If it isn't (or it isn't revealed on 10/11), then go with the SGS2 (or Bionic if you're like me and want 4G).

After all this time this is what we get? With all the competition, this long wait, an incremental update is not what any of us expected. Not enough to keep off the competition. WP7 just got Mango which puts it near the competition as well. We needed more.

Do it in person at a store. This looks like a bug.

I see it as though Sprint didn't really have a choice. They have to offer parity, otherwise people won't switch to them if they have to give up the iPhone.

To further complicate things, their unlimited plans is what will entice iPhone users, but will that doom Sprint like it hurt AT&T and Verizon? That's about the only thing they can really offer over them right now, but if selling out for the iPhone kills it (and coupled with them losing money on bringing the iPhone), then Sprint is going to end up really badly off.
Sprint's 3G network sucks ass.
A lot of new iPhone users rushing to come to Sprint because of unlimited data will surely be disappointed.

What iPhone user would leave AT&T's 3G network where they can(or already) get 2-5MB/s and come to Sprint's 3G network to get <500kb/s?
That's moronic.

the news is reporting that as soon as apple ended the keynote without a "one more thing... here's the iphone5" announcement, the stocks tanks 3.5%

lol

When I was at a ATT last week upgrading my sons phone I asked the rep. She told me it was transferable to all smart phones. I wouldn't push no buttons online. Best to call ATT or go to an ATT store for purchase if it's an option for you.

Will do, thanks.

Question - is the new Samsung device announcement coming next week expected to just be a Verizon device? Or all carriers?

I don't know what market you're in, but my Sprint 3G speeds are closer to 500kb/s, not 500KB/s.

It's actually been lower than that of late. :'(

Yeah, I'm not a tech junkie.
Sometimes I make the mistake of MB/mb, and KB/kb.
Whatever it is, it's complete crap.

There are a lot of Sprint customers here.
I know for sure Zerocool (and now Headcase_Fargone) can validate the crap that is Sprint's 3G network.

I am absolutely stunned they did not increase the screen size. I'll be grabbing the SII-X as soon as it drops here in a week or so, but was hoping the I5 would be a stronger device to maybe make the pricing a bit more competitive. Oh well.

i dont think anyone knows yet

and yes about your unlimited data stuff call them or go to the store. its what my boss had to do when he went from IOS -> abdroid a few months ago

I'm buying a used iPhone 4. I certainly wan't an iPhone but I'm not getting into contract for Siri. I've played with my wifes iPhone 4 pretty extensively and I don't see where a dual core is going to be beneficial, other than Siri. With Android, I see the need. With iOS, not so much. Siri and an 8MP camera isn't enough for a contract. Used 4 and hope for better next year.

I just want to point out that I said a couple weeks ago that it would be ridiculous for Apple to release a 5 and a 4S, so there would only be one.

And then there was one...

Got a Vibrant now and I am no doubt leaning towards the Nexus Prime. But I was interested in the rumored iPhone 5 and was really giving it real consideration if it had a 4 inch screen and LTE (or at the very least HSPA+ 21Mbps).

With only the iPhone 4S launching, I think my decision pretty much became crystal clear. 3.5 inch display is just too small. I was already having a hard time settling for a mere 4 inch display with the 4.5+ inch Android phones coming out.

iPhone 4S looks impressive. But I guess the rumor mill, fake iPhone 5 cases, and the hype just turned the event into a disappointment.

I have no doubt the iPhone 4S will be insanely popular with Apple's huge loyal fan base. There will be people in line outside of Apple stores probably days in advance. But I'm also thinking Android manufactures are giving out a sigh of release. Apple could have done better I think and they didn't.
