Questions:

1)Anyone with an iphone 3GS can pay the "early upgrade" fee and get an iPhone 4, right?

Go to here and go down to the "How to get one" section.

Here are the 3 tips which I think apply to you:
  • Visit AT&T's website. From there, you'll log into your account and click on the "Check Upgrade Options" link.
  • Dial *639# on your current AT&T phone. In a few seconds, you'll get a reply text message telling you what's up -- whether you're eligible, or if not, the date on which you will be.
  • Call customer service. No offense to AT&T's call center reps, but we'd use this as a last resort.

Anyone know if there is a policy to do an upgrade if you just bought a 3gs? I bought my 3gs 2 weeks ago b/c the girl at the at&t store said the iphone4 wasn't expected to come out until August...

Can't you just return the phone since you're still within 30 days of getting it?

Also, why did you get a 3GS when the iPhone 4 rumors were all over the net? ;)

I needed a smartphone/blackberry with enterprise data for my new job so I couldn't really wait for the IPhone4, I was using a razor =(

If I return the phone I think I would have to pay full price for an Iphone4 wouldn't I since I only got the discount opening up a new 2yr contract.

No. If you are within the first 30 days, you can return the phone and you will get the new contract discount on what ever else you buy.

With the iPhone 4 having such a high density LCD panel, would dead / stuck pixels still be noticeable?

For example:
- a single dead pixel in the middle of the screen if the screen is displaying only a white background / image.

- a single bright / stuck pixel in the middle of the screen if the screen is displaying only a black background / image.

Yes you potentially could cus the whole imperceivable to human eye thing is only for people with not good vision. People with good vision should still be able to see the individual pixels in the iPhone 4 but either way it's a really high density which is good.

How many of you current iPhone 3G/3GS owners reserved and picked up your phone on the day it was released, from an Apple store? The 3GS I have now I bought about a month after it was released but I want the iPhone 4 right away. I was going to reserve it but now Im wondering how busy it will be when I go to pick it up on the first day.

What was it like when you went to pick up your iPhone on release day? How early did you have to get there? What were the lines like? Is getting it on release day not worth all the waiting in line and dealing with the masses of people?

I don't have first hand experience, but a few friends say that getting your phone if you preordered is relatively painless. This of course depends on if you go to the Apple store or AT&T store, but from what I've heard it's surprisingly quick for what you'd expect.

Just curious from the resell thread. What would my total costs be for the iPhone? I see the $199 list price, but what other fees (Activation, restocking, ETF) could be there? Can I get the activation waived? The minimum monthly cost is also $55/mo + taxes.

There's the list price + activation, which can't be waived regardless of what you feel like doing with it. If you buy it at the subsidized plan price it will have an activation fee. The ETF is being increased (on smartphones specifically) to $325. Then there's the plan cost. So it's a hefty expense if you want to try and resell it. Doesn't seem worth it at all IMO unless there's a huge shortage, which there rarely is on Apple devices. They seem to make enough pretty quickly.

Some current AT&T subscribers will get hit with an $18 "upgrade fee," and I am not sure how hard it is to get that waived.

As for the rest of your question (ETF, restocking) I am not sure why you would factor that into the cost of the phone because the former only applies if you break your contract and the latter if you try to return the phone.

Thanks for the replies. I don't plan to return the phone or break the contract. However, I want to make sure I'm aware all of the possible fees. Hearing about a 30 day return policy is nice until you realize there's a penalty. Plus, if I move to another country anytime in the next two years, I will have to break the contract.

I definitely wasn't going to resell. I was just referring to how that thread brought up some fees that I didn't think about.
