Agreed. Notifications in general are a pretty weak part of the iOS ecosystem in general. It would be nice (for me) if they adopted something similar to how Android notifications worked but I'll just keep dreaming (and just use my Android phone).

Android or even better the way WebOS does it. Notifications suck in iPhone OS but I can't say that cus I'll get flamed for saying anything bad about it.

Hardly.

I think most iphone users would agree that the notifcation system could be vastly improved. Some of the work done with the jailbroken phones is a big improvement over what Apple offers in the stock.

You will get criticized if you claim that because the notification system isn't that great that the entire phone is some shiny toy only non-geeks could love.

Agreed, the current notification system is garbage. Lockinfo helps tremendously, but its not native and not very stable. Apple NEEDS to improve this ASAP as its one of the reason's my eyes have been straying to android recently.

Notifications & Lockscreen are very impt and FAR too overlooked by apple iMO.

What about Intelliscreen? Pretty bad ass, would be nice to have the functionality built in, but it's a really good app.

Didn't apple say in the OS4 preview that the push notification system would be vastly improved? But I guess not....?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/09/palm-loses-webos-notifications-architect-to-apple/

Might not take too long:
Rich Dellinger might not be a name you instantly recognize, but he is the dude credited with bringing about the unintrusive banner notification system that forms part of webOS' widespread appeal. And, as of today, he's also in the employ of one Steve Jobs. The new Senior UI Designer at Apple, Inc looks to have made his way through Palm's exit doors in the immediate aftermath of the HP takeover announcement, and joins Matias Duarte on the list of significant talent departures from the webOS design team. We expect Rich will be getting his teeth stuck into the iPhone's admittedly tired and obtrusive notifications, and hopefully sprinkling some of that webOS fairy dust into the next iteration of Apple's iOS. Let's be honest, who here hasn't dreamt of an iPre?

Out of curiosity, is there really any practical benefit to having such high resolution on a screensize of 3.5"? I suppose it sounds impressive, but I just don't get why I would care that much on such a small device.

Easier on the eyes, better quality pics/videos/apps/etc....

I guess that is like asking if we need faster phones...we don't need but it sure is cool!

I have a 3G (can't remember if the 3GS had a higher res screen) but it's pretty easy to see the pixels and the aliasing around the text and rounded corners. It still looks good but it could definitely be better. Having that high of a res in the 4th one should/will get rid of the aliasing entirely so things that are round look perfectly round, not that blocky 'staircase' type of effect that you can see in the lower res screen.

Seriously, its night and day. 480x360 is just not that good. Text, in particular, looks bad on a 480x360 screen, even on a slightly smaller device (like the G1's 3.2" screen).

Alright I looked it up, both the 3G and 3GS have the same screen res so yeah... it'll be a pretty noticeable improvement. I really would like to have seen a 4" screen at full 720 res, but that probably would have jumped the cost up... and I suppose it's better to keep the costs at the known and already high price point rather than try and increase it.

I'm sure it won't be too long before those filter their way into the market. Hardware manufacturers like to leapfrog Apple's tech specs to try to beat their mindshare. They didn't have a need to go beyond the 800x480 range because the iPhone was still at 480x360. Now that they've bumped it up, the others will try to beat it.

Especially with this trend of bigger screens, higher resolutions will get more popular. My Droid looked good with 854x480 on a 3.7" screen. My HD2 has a slightly lower resolution - 800x480 - on a larger 4.3" screen. Its not that it looks bad, but its noticeably not as good.

True. With the different manufacturers making Android based phones... well, Motorola and HTC... I'm sure one will pop up around the holiday season.

I was just talking with a friend who has been playing around with iOS4 on his 3GS and he told me something interesting;

The folders in this new iOS4 can only hold up to 12 apps. When you open the folder it just fills up the screen depending on how many apps you have in the folder. I was assuming you could just dump as much shit as you want in a folder and when you open the folder you could scroll through it.

Now, maybe my friend is doing something wrong here but if this is true than these folders just became fucking worthless.

"fucking worthless" seems a bit extreme.

it was mentioned a long time that folders can hold up to 12 apps. maybe the jailbreaking solutions can hold more?

Oh, I didnt know it was already mentioned. I just dont understand why they limited the folders to only 12 apps, doesnt make any sense to me.

Questions:

1)Anyone with an iphone 3GS can pay the "early upgrade" fee and get an iPhone 4, right?

2)How much space exactly will a 720p video take up (per minute or so)? Im trying to decide whether i want a 16 or 32GB. I wonder what type of compression they will use.

Of course it can. If there's something that Apple does wrong, there's ALWAYS a better option with jailbroken apps. The one I use is called "Categories" and has been out for quite a while. You create folders on your springboard, choose from a large list of icons what you want the folder to look like, then put as many apps in there as you can. It used to be pretty buggy, and would crash if you tried to put more than 7ish apps in there at a time but it's been very stable for a while now.
