I have questions for the OP then...
Why do you consider a light phone to be the better way to go?
When is a phone to heavy for you, when it carries the Apple label?
I use my phone for talking, and i bring it with me, when i walk. Therefore its better its lighter. Most people use the phone that way.

What evidence do you have that the weight of the phone is 100% about looks and has absolutely nothing to do with impact strength and "shatter proofing" from a fall?
I never said it was 100% about looks - where do you get that?, i said it was about perciewed quality, using weight to give that perciewed quality.

Are you aware that material thickness is proportional to the pressure that can be applied before fracture?

You make the obvious sound difficult ?- and i think the most correct way write it, is that what you can apply of pressure is proportional to material thickness. The material thickness doesnt get higher when you apply more pressure.

Before your question i thought most children in kindergarden instincttivesly knew it. I am not so sure any more. My fate in humanity is shrinking. Its the Apples fault, they have dropped on most heads instead of the ground.

I mean, surely you're not forming an opinion based on bias and you actually have first hand experience with it... right?

Uhh, that was a tricky question, i didnt think about it - I DONT OWN AN IPHONE AND I ADMIT IT!. Arg..., you got me.

They should make phones out of same carbon material they make Look bike pedals out of. Its injection molded, so easy to fabricate, strong and light.

Agree, good example. The use of injection molded materials is the way to go, and the bicycle industry have some impressive products, showing it can be made to last even under extreme stress. Hopefully we will see some very strong and light product in the future. If its from Apple it will sure be sweet for the eye.

I have 2 E71's, the build quality is crap.

My e71 has been dropped numerous times, and not one crack.

My brother dropped an old-school Nokia e61 from a second story of a building onto the ground, and it escaped with barely a scratch.

My gf's iphone4 developed a cracked screen just from being in her purse.

1.) Apple does no marketing
2.) The materials in the iP4 are pretty "green"
3.) The iP4 holds up insanely well over time
5.) The Nokia E71's I got last week are cheap and flimsy feeling, the back cover feels like aluminum foil.

Oh man, you just lost all credibility with that statement. I know you love Apple, and I know you own their stock. However, don't be blinded by your fan-boism. Apple is ONE of the BEST, if not BEST, at marketing. It's what they do, and they do it well.

Pretty "green" eh? Got any evidence to back it up.

Sorry to thread-jack, but that first statement just got to me. Back to topic...

In reference to the iPhone 4S, how much marketing have they really done? I see commercials for Android phones on TVs all the time but haven't seen much out of Apple lately.

More marketing from Apple. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they like to toot their own horn about "saving the earth", but you do all realize that all iPhones are manufactured in China mainland right?

what's your point? Everything is made in china, IDGAF

my point is at least they have a marketing pamphlet available which I will take at face value.

Where's the similar green initiative marketing sheet for samsung / htc / etc? (which i will also happily take at face value for sake of this discussion)

Sorry, confused marketing with consumer testing. Apples marketing is obvious.

Apple also gets high marks for being green from different groups

I must be the only person that doesn't love the iPhone 4 design. I think the aluminum sides give it the appearance of seeming fatter than it really is, I think the lack of curves makes it seem brickish, and I think the buttons look like they belong on a children's toy.

And I am not an Apple hater. I think the iPad 2 is by far the best looking tablet (the iPad 1 suffers from the same issues as the iPhone 4). I loved the look of my original iPhone at the time. I think the 4th gen iPod touch looks amazing! It makes the iPhone 4 look like a hot girl's frumpy sister I think....

I absolutely hate the metal body on my Incredible 2. I've dropped it a couple times from moderate heights and the body "dents" and gouges like cheap aluminum foil. It's complete crap. Give me back my plastic bodies. They may feel "cheaper" but at least I'm not worried about it destroying itself if I drop it.

We have a couple Nexus S 4G's at work for development. They've been dropped a few times without anything more than a scuff.

Keep the glass screens though.

IMO the rubberized metal the OG droid and DX used was the best of both worlds, it is light enough while being really strong and doesn't gouge like a pure metal body does and it does not have a large glass backplate to shatter

it also IMO has great hand feel, as its not super plastic like nor is it super smooth

Build quality thread? If it isn't the iphone it's samsung etc... same rehash.

oh-look-its-this-thread-again%5B1%5D.jpg

These are the top 2 mobile phones. What else are we gonna talk about in this section?

It's like complaining about threads featuring the gtx 580 and 6970 in the video card section. Makes no sense.

Phones have become like any other luxery product out there. Design and looks mostly trumps functionality.

Cars would function much more better if they had rubber bumpers. Also, put some rubber side skirts on the doors to protect from door dings. Rolling on 20s? Naw, it is more fuel efficient and functional to have 15s.

I also never use cases as it takes away the beauty of the devices.so for me it is a waste of quality materials as I am just careful with my shit. But most people aren't. I guess.
I'm this way too.
I honestly don't understand the point of buying a device, going on and on about how 'beautiful' it is and such an awe-inspiring example of industrial design etc...

Then wrapping it up with what looks like a third-rate slab of vinyl from the 99 cent store. There are some cases of course that look okay, but many are just wretched IMHO. And I really don't like the way most cases make a svelte phone look humungous.

I can be a butterfingers at times with my stuff, but even so I've never felt the need to cover things up until they're ugly just to prevent the possibility.

i have a lg breeze dumbphone POS right now, now THAT is crap build quality.
the iphones are pretty nice overall, but even with an employee discount it still costs $400 to get the iphone4 so i'll probably be going for the nexus s, or nexus prime when i can get it.

and lol @ apple does no marketing

This thread is just trolling, nothing more.
I had an iPhone 4 and it was of excellent quality. The only reason I returned it was I didnt like the Apple ecosystem as much as I thought I would.
And Nokias are pretty much all well-built. Theres only a couple stinkers in their line. The E71 is excellent in particular. The folks crying they all stink must have gotten a bad batch or something but the one I owned was excellent. My only problem with Nokia is their Symbian line is dying. WP7 is their future but they are messing about getting to it.

Yeah the iPad 2 is definitely molded after the old iPhone designs with tapered edges and curves, not sharp corners. Weird they would jump back and forth like that. Maybe they though that for something going in your pocket.......
Wait, that makes no sense. It should have been the other way around. Rounded phone thats easy to hold for a long time and slip away easily, and a squared off tablet that sits nicely on your desk or lap.

You might not like the facts? The chosen materials for ip4 is irrational from a build quality point of view. It can happen you loose your phone while walking, its not uncommon, and this video show the consequenses. When buying a phone, you have the right to know the facts. The facts is, the iphone is fragile. The fact is, the phone is designed to signal high quality, while its no near the build quality the price indicates. Reviewer and consumers have the right to know.

We need objective test now, instead of this - it feels whatever...

Um no. Comparing the part of the same items over and over is nothing like comparing the overall products.
