iPhone 4 Antenna Press Conference Underway

I've been messing with my Curve 8330 ever since he showed that slide with the Bold. I cant get the signal to fluctuate more than 5dBm, and I'm in a shitty signal area(average signal for me is -100dBm).

I can't get it to happen with the Bold 9000 and I live in an area with horrible AT&T signal problems.

This doesn't mean that they're expecting the other companies to give free cases. They are probably going to negotiate a bulk deal on buying a ton of them from other companies at the same price it takes to manufacture the Bumpers.

yeah, but if apple is giving away 3 MILLION + cases for the iphone 4, third party companies are going to be hosed. They wont be buying any cases.

I'm sure Giz feels really bad about what they did...

Did Giz get invited to this? I know they were blacklisted from the actual iPhone 4 release conference.

No they weren't invited. They are posting quotes from other sites in their liveblog. And no, Giz doesn't give a shit. They have been and always will be the smart-asses of the tech blogs, it kinda comes with the territory of being part of the Gawker network.

But Apple can't make 3 million themselves. They're gonna have to buy from inCase etc. And they aren't giving away 3 million... they are giving away up to 3 million. It depends on how many people want a case.

And they mentioned its not just Bumpers, other cases will be given away as well (from third-party manuf.)

Which in turn means, APPLE will have to BUY from the OTHER 3rd party case mfg. No one is really at loss of business..

10:25AM "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

This means nothing. AT&T probably doesn't drop 40 calls out of 100. They probably drop 0.1 calls out of 100. The iPhone4 call drop rate could be 0.9 more than this. This means that the call drop rate for the 3GS could be 0.1/100 and the iPhone4 could be 1/100, meaning it drops 10 times as many calls.

this +1

Q: Quick followup question to Scott's point, about the stack on the cellphone. I'd like to know if the handset has any role in congestion management... the congestion problem, it didn't get better with the iPhone 4. Does the stack play no role at all in the management of congestion?
Steve: I'd let Scott take this in a second, but first, when AT&T wants to add a cell tower in Texas, it takes about three weeks... when they want to add one in SF, it takes three years. That's the single biggest problem they're having. They're spending a lot expanding their networks, and our data rates are way better on the iPhone 4, but AT&T has to expand its network, and that's a long process. I know because we're constantly asking about it. They're trying really hard, and sometimes I think they should enlist the support of the users in the community.

I wonder which areas have the most "problems" with AT&T.
Texas Vs. California
hmmmmmm

I love it.

Just goes to show that the "cool" thing to do these days is hate on Apple for no reason.

How much heat did google take for selling a phone who ZERO customer support other than their search engine?

LOL!!

RIM, HTC, Samsung should sue them for this crap. That's like Toyota saying their pedal problems were normal because it can happen to any brand of car...

Glad he acknowledged the proximity sensor issue

This is actually a larger problem than 'bars' which I have yet to experience a dropped call but people are singularly focused on like lemmings. Not to mention data scale back. Oh well. Forrest for the trees.

Well, Jobs sort of acknowledged the problem (even though he says all other phones have the same problem 🙄).

They are offering refunds and a free fix (cases) for a problem that Apple should have caught before the iPhone release. This IS Apple we're talking about here. They are famous (rightly or wrongly) for their engineering. People expect them to have better QA & QC than a Chinese knock-off.

I give them a 7/10.

I still think using glass for the back of a phone is bad idea.

They just might. RIM and Nokia aren't too happy about what Apple said yesterday about their phones.

RIM's CEOs said the following in a statement.
"Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."

Too bad for them this is a demonstrated problem and anyone can view on youtube or do themselves.
