iPhone 4 Antenna Press Conference Underway

I like the response. We'll give you a free case, or you can return the phone for free. The dancing at the beginning was a bit much, but to say it was an industry problem that hit them a bit harder was the way to go.

its only up to 9/30 though. its not forever. So that makes you wonder what do they plan on having after wards.

True, but I imagine products like the iPhone are like movie tickets sales. The first weekend is explosive. Sales taper off. Maybe will pickup again during holiday season, but I bet the sales figures of the iPhone are frontloaded. It's still a substantial amount.

I disagree... They're trying to both fix their problem and claim there is no problem.

Also I think it's fine that they only supply the cases through Sept 30... by then they'll either have a new hardware rev, or you'll know ahead of time about the issue and it will be part of your buying decision.

I'm sure by Sept 30th they'll have revised iPhones that'll have the insulation on the antenna like they should have. Or have put some sort of polymer on the outside of the case to prevent the issue from coming up again.

Basically, those of us who had to get the iPhone first, will be screwed.

Actually fixing the problem... The next batches of iPhones will probably have a non-conductive coating on the metal antenna.

The press conference was typical Apple BS (also known as: iBull) to make it seem like there's no problem yet they're such a good company that they're giving you a case anyways.

Oh well, at least I'll get a free case, and now we know the release date for Canada, July 30th.

"We think we've gotten to the heart of the problem, and the heart is that smartphones have weak spots."

And even if all smartphones have weakspots, yours is weaker than others

If you don't like your phone return it.

Q: I can't get my Bold to drop right now, maybe you can show me how to do it?
Steve: You may not see it in certain areas.

Ouch

In his defense, Apple campus had ridiculously strong reception. I have 2 good friends who work there and they tried it with their iPhone 4s when I made fun of them on Day 2. None of them could reproduce the bars dropping. I wonder what you'd get, but it might be like the Anand article where he gets like -50 dB and with Apple's terrible dB to bars reporting as shown in AT's review, it won't drop in bars yet with a -20dB change if you're at -50dB to begin with.

So yeah. But once my friends got home and tried it elsewhere, you could see it drop. Perhaps some blame could be placed on Apple and if a lot of testing was done on campus.... It's a bad spot to spot reception issues when you put fat towers there...

I've been messing with my Curve 8330 ever since he showed that slide with the Bold. I cant get the signal to fluctuate more than 5dBm, and I'm in a shitty signal area(average signal for me is -100dBm).

If I death grip my EVO I can get a 5dB drop (low signal area).

Dude.. this is a big fucking deal. Free cases.

InCase is gonna go bankrupt as with all the other case making companies... LOL

This doesn't mean that they're expecting the other companies to give free cases. They are probably going to negotiate a bulk deal on buying a ton of them from other companies at the same price it takes to manufacture the Bumpers.

Steve: It's really simple, if we tell people what our next product is, they stop buying our current products. Sometimes websites buy stolen property and they get out there... and case makers have a history of showing off their new cases for our new products. The case vendors haven't had a history of helping to keep our work under wraps.

Shot at Gizmodo lol
