UPDATES
1:09: Jobs says they've only known about the issue for 22 days

1:10: Claims problem isn't unique to iPhone 4. Claims Blackberries have the same issue.

1:14: Says a whole bunch of other phones have the same issue when gripped in the wrong spot.

1:15: Says the signal problem was made to appear more dramatic by the bar display problem.

1:17: Confirms Apple engineers knew the signal would drop, but didn't think it would be an issue.

1:18: Continues reinforcing that all smartphones have this issue. Funny how previous iPhone models didn't.

1:19: Claims only 0.5% of iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare to complain about antenna issues.

1:20: Says this "doesn't jive" with media reports.

1:21: Claims iPhone 4 return rates are only 1.7%, less than the 6% for the 3GS.

1:25: Confirms IP4 drops more calls than the 3GS, but it's still only about 1 in 100.

1:28: Says problem only affects a small number of users. Claims he's gotten thousands of emails from happy customers.

1:29: Pokes fun at media

1:29: Recommends everyone update to iOS 4.1

1:30: EVERYONE OFFERED A FREE CASE. Refund for those who already bought a bumper.

1:30: Deal good until September 30th

1:31: Users will have a choice of cases.

1:31: Apple on Apple's website for one starting late next week

1:31: Offers 30 day return policy with no restocking fees if you're still unhappy with the phone, case or no.

1:32: They're looking into problems with the proximity sensor. Says its software related.

1:32: White phone will ship by end of this month.

1:33: iPhone 4 will launch internationally in 17 countries on July 30th

1:37: Claims they're still working on the problem and this isn't a band-aid.

"not unique to the iPhone 4"

but particularly bad with an exposed metal antenna.... a covered antenna is less susceptible, but an exposed metal antenna that conducts with your skin? yeah... you bet the issues are magnified.

10:11AM "The BlackBerry Bold 9700... let's see what happens when you hold it in a normal way... 5 bars... and now on holding the left side. The bars go down."

who said holding it with your left hand is not a normal way. STFU Jobs. When you incorporate pinch zoom and stuff, how do you expect your users not to use both hands. I'm actually better with pinch zoom using my right hand, sot he phone has to be in the left...

LOL, they messed up their slide...

Min bars 5, max bars 1? 😛

I love it.

Just goes to show that the "cool" thing to do these days is hate on Apple for no reason.

How much heat did google take for selling a phone who ZERO customer support other than their search engine?

Did they get that much sales?

their online only model was the most moronic thing. I refuse to buy anything I can't at least see for hold in person before order.

If they sold it in stores and only provided them with online only support you'll get a huge up roar.

10:18AM "We knew that you could see bars drop on the phone when you hold it in a certain way, it's a fact, phones aren't perfect. But people are reporting better reception with this antenna than they've ever seen before."

Really? Cause there's a ton of videos out there that show otherwise.

Nothing wrong with that. For those of us who have been buying unlocked phones for a long time, online orders are a way of life.

I'm ok with Google's model. It just doesn't work in the US. Works wonderfully in the rest of the world though. I think I have more issues with the crappy speakerphone, earpiece, and bad RF the phone gets than the fact that it's a $539 phone and what not. I bought my Milestone for $650.

"we asked what's the percentage of all iPhone 4 users that have called AppleCare about the antenna or reception, or anything near reception problems. Because you would have thought 'Jesus, it must be a lot of users complaining about this' -- So what percentage have called AppleCare? 0.55% Just one half of one percent."

0.55% of 3 million is 16500 users who have called applecare. How many iPhone4 users bought applecare?

Exactly. I wonder what percentage of calls AT&T got in regards to the antenna issue. What about Radio Shack? What about Wal-Mart?

Misleading. During the conference he said 0.55% of all APPLECARE customers had reception issues.

Well to be honest the videos show a drop in bars. If you read Anand's correlation between bars and dB the dynamic range of the bars is very narrow.

1) Apple needs to report correct bars to dB correlation. 4.1 addresses this. Comparing to Android isn't fair. I've noticed that -77dB = 4 bars and like 85dB = 3 bars, etc.... Apple seems to be operating in the -92 to -113 dB range with 5 bars. That's ridiculous.

2) Other phones DO drop in reception, but this is also mitigated by the fact that they don't have such narrow dynamic range in SNR reporting thru bars.

3) Anand himself reported that he could make calls at -113dB while the 3GS would drop left and right. To him the iPhone 4 antenna is better in general.

So 20 minutes of nothing is wrong, it happens with everyone.

Are they attempting to use Steve Jobs reality distortion powers?

I'd think steve or someone in marketing will realize that calling a press conference and going through what they've done so far will make things worst than it already is.

10:23AM "Pretty interesting... one more data point. AT&T has given us the early call drop information just a few days ago. They log call drops, it helps them improve their network. So we can't give out the absolute call drop data... AT&T can't release those numbers to their competitors, but we're going to give you the delta."

READ : AT&T doesn't want you to realize how MANY calls they drop... can't throw Verizon more data to laugh at them right? 😀

Haha anyway, on a serious note... yeah I see what they're saying.

Can someone clarify the 1/100 thing. Is he saying that compared to the 3GS, the iPhone 4 drops 1% of the time the 3GS will drop or is he saying there's a difference of 1% in drop rate?

Edit: Ok nm.. I reread it 3 times. I got it. Yeah so there's a 1% separation between drop rate with teh iPhone 4 dropping more...

Dunno.. I just understood it as the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the 3GS.. and then back to super defensive mode he goes.

Edit: Ugh.. I hate using a case. Haven't used one on my 3GS. Wouldn't want to on the 4.

I think the reality distortion powers belong to Gizmodo who is all pissy about getting their shit pushed in (legally) by Apple.

"And we asked, what's the percent of iPhone 4 users who have called AppleCare with any issues about antenna or reception, or anything near.
0.55% of all iPhone customers have called AppleCare with an antenna issue.
So this doesn't really jive with what you read about this problem."

LOL I bet ATT got a boat load more. Still its like over 15000 this early. Many people will deal with it at first. Many will not even know just figure ATT sucks lol. ATT should sue apple hahaha that would be funny.

Not much apple can really do though, the right thing is not necessarily the smart business choice. Try to skirt it as much as possible, admit no fault, and try to get as much money as possible.

10:25AM "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

This means nothing. AT&T probably doesn't drop 40 calls out of 100. They probably drop 0.1 calls out of 100. The iPhone4 call drop rate could be 0.9 more than this. This means that the call drop rate for the 3GS could be 0.1/100 and the iPhone4 could be 1/100, meaning it drops 10 times as many calls.
