iPhone 2014: It's time.

To add, now there's a rumor that the iPhone 6 plus will still launch alongside the iPhone 6 on 9/19. There's also a rumor that the 5.5" iPhone 6 is called the "iPhone 6 plus".

It won't discourage me. I'm doing Next, so I basically upgrade whenever I feel like it.

How do you like the upgrade scheme? It looks like Edge is cheaper if you're an upgrade fiend. Here's my math for it...

Share Everything
You buy the initial phone at $399, and pay $40 per month for the entire 24-month contract. At 12 months, you buy a new phone off-contract for $829, and sell your old phone for $450.

$399 + $40 * 24 + $829 - $450 = $1,738

Verizon Edge
You pay nothing upfront and $34.54 $41.95 per month for the phone, and pay $30 per month. At 12 months (the required 60% pay-off period), you trade in your old phone and reset the cycle.

$0 + $41.95 * 24 + $30 * 24 = $1,726

EDIT:

Actually, I got the price wrong for Edge, because I divided the phone cost by 24 instead of 20. The thing is, over the course of two years, you'll end up paying over the whole time (since you would upgrade midway), which means while the cost is divided over 20 months, you still pay over 24. Hmm... it's no wonder Verizon switched from a 24-month scheme to a 20-month scheme. I'm not sure if I'm as interested now. I think the only real benefit is in the fact that I could also get 10GB of data for only $15 more a month vs my current 4GB plan. The limitations of the 4GB plan is why I rarely use my phone for video.

It's basically a wash for me, I think. If I do a contract, I pay $300 up front (assume 32GB iPhone) and pay $40/mo for access. That makes the total cost of the device $1260. On Next I'll pay about $35/mo for the device and $15/mo for the access. That's about $1200.

I'm just a big fan of your contract being tied to your device and not your number and also for people to realize how much their phones really cost.

I'll probably be able to sell my iPhone 5S for $450, then I'll use that to pay off half a new phone purchase. Then repeat next year. I could just do the Next 12 and trade it out every year and I'd essentially wash there as well.

I wish we could have a march-madness style tournament of iPhone predictions.

My prediction is it won't look exactly like the leaks, and will look good in person. The 5.5 will be released at the same time but won't be available until the holidays. 16/64/128 storage config.

6 x 3 colors is 18 different iPhones they must make. Only 6 different PCBs

Lol. I remember that. Didn't Apple try to have the guy from Gizmodo arrested for buying known stolen property. Steve Jobs didn't like his vision to be dicked around with.

I also learned that it's oh so fun watching Gawker squirm. They're such big bags of crap over there, it's not even funny.

Oh, and the 3G was the first to come to mind because I had one of those.

I always thought Apple was a bit too much of a bully in that case. Gizmodo did what I would expect a tech blog to do in their situation.

They *immediately* called Apple and told them what they had; offering to return it. Obviously, the Apple reps didn't believe them. Apple could get it back at any time, so the only charge you could really level against Gizmodo would be...negotiating with a criminal?

It's like paying the randsom for someone else's child and trying to return the child to that person, who doesn't believe that you did it. 😛

Well, not exactly the same...because Gizmodo would stand to benefit from a HUGE boost in readership and ad revenue as a result. Still. It's a gadget blog. I can't possibly expect them to blow that opportunity. No way.

$15/month is for 10GB+ data plans. For those of us with fewer family members or lighter data needs, it's $25/month. That's an extra $240 over a 2 year contract period. I ran the numbers for our plan and it's cheaper to do a contract.

My prediction is it will look exactly like the leaks, and will look good in person. The 5.5 will be released at the same with very low availability at the beginning, but wlll become increasingly available through the holidays. 16/64/128 configs, just to piss the entry level types off.

Apple takes security to highest level for Sept. 9 event

Apple has wired the entire event auditorium — the Flint Center for the Performing Arts — with a brand new, state-of-the-art security system to lock down access and prevent leaks.
The auditorium is crawling with 24-hour security personnel. Anyone working at the massive show, from caterers to construction staff and technicians, is required to submit their phones to Apple’s security team. The phones’ cameras are being covered in special tamper-proof tape, which changes color if removal is attempted.
“If it changes color, we’ll be fired on the spot,” said one person who is working at the show but asked to remain anonymous.

“There are no communications in or out,” the staffer said. “Everyone thinks Apple is tapping our phones and monitoring what we say. Everyone is super-paranoid.”

Is that pic supposed to make me believe their security is "top notch"? That guy looks like he couldn't run a ten minute mile.

Yup. I'm pretty sure the nicer-looking glass inserts will appear with the 6s next year.

I was just showing the structure, which doesn't seem to have changed at all since last week. Not even an Apple logo (yet).

I wonder what it's made of, given that it's temporary.

Lol. Me thinks they're taking things way too seriously. We already know everything about the damn thing anyway. 😀

What damn thing?

iPhone 6?
iPad 2 Air?
iWatch?
MacBook 12"?
iMac Retina?
OS X Yosemite release?
New Mac Pro?
iOS 8 launch?
New Apple TV?
New Mac mini?
New Retina pro displays?
New home automation stuff?
Etc.

Or maybe they have something else truly Insanely Great.

I'm sure the new Apple TV and iTime will integrate tightly with HomeKit.

Oh wow. I know exactly where that is. I saw that picture and knew immediately. I play Ingress over there. It's a 0.5-0.75 mile walk from my house. Hah, as if Apple campus was close enough to my house already.

You are not incorrect.

However, have you ran the numbers of just switching to a 10GB plan. I'd guess it depends on what you current plan is but I suspect if you're in the 6GB plan or above it might be close to a wash to switch to the 10GB plan.

My predictions:
  • 3G
  • Cut/Copy/Paste
  • MMS
  • Custom ringtones
  • Bluetooth A2DP / AVRCP / HID keyboard
  • Wallpapers
  • Folders
  • Multi-tasking

Those numbers are in line with what I was thinking. I suspect the 5.5" model may get a faster processor, but only like 1.5 or 1.6.

That score puts it right up to the S801 2.4ghz quad-core processor. Apple simply doesn't need 2ghz+ clock speeds and quad-core. Though it would be extremely nice to see, lol.

1GB of RAM would be disappointing. But, again, I don't think 2GB is really needed right now. The issue is, it might not be needed right now but it will probably be needed in a couple of years. For people like me, that upgrade every year, it's not a huge issue. But it will affect those that do a two-year upgrade cycle.

I'm happy to think that Apple will be focusing on what matters. Software, experience, differentiation. Having top notch hardware is great and all but if the software experience falls short it doesn't matter.

I believe the ",2" part means it *is* the 5.5" model.

Not necessarily. There will probably be, at the very least, a iPhone 7,1 and 7,2 in the 4.7" size. Most likely for different cellular radios.

I'm calling iPhone 7,6 and 7,7 for the 5.5" models!

There is an iPhone 6,2, which is an iPhone 5s. I have the iPhone 6,1, which is also an iPhone 5s.

The China Unicom version of the iPhone is 6,2. So is the UK/European version. I live in Canada with a GSM version.

Plus, we already know the Chinese dude in the video has a 4.7" iPhone.
