iPad2: AT&T or Verizon or Wifi only? Size? Decisions...

I am in a similar dilemma. I have an iPhone 4 that carries all my music so I should have 15 GB left for apps and PDF documents/books if I buy the 16 GB WiFi model.

People with iPads: Do you guys use a lot of the memory or is the 16 GB enough for me?

guys, if you have an iPhone 4 with AT&T and you get an iPad 2, do you have to get a *new* Data plan or does it go into the "phone" data plan?

the 3g on the ipad is at-will; but you can chose to move up to the 4gb/month service on your iPhone 4 which will enable it to be a wifi hot-spot for 3 devices.

Really depends on what you are going to do with your iPad. If you plan to get most of your data from the cloud then I could see getting the 16GB iPad. I had the 32GB and used it mostly for games/ remote desktop. My iPad wasn't even close to being full but if I had the 16GB, it probably wouldn't have ben enough.

It's better to have too much space than not enough IMO.

I was planning on getting a "2" tomorrow. Its going to be for my wife so I was just going to get the wifi version and if we needed to use internet on the go I could tether it to my JB iphone.

Quick question on that.....I have tetherme which uses the bluetooth connection. I can sync the ipad to the iphone using bluetooth, right?

The CDMA network is only really useful in the USA and you don't get a SIM card with the Verizon version. So unless you think you'll be in the USA only and only want to use Verizon, I would get the AT&T version. That way, if you travel, you will have options.

Michael

I would argue that unless you travel outside of the US, getting AT&T is a mistake.

Fact is this, AT&T edge sucks. A large portion of the continental US falls under AT&T's edge coverage. I just couldn't handle surfing on EDGE.

That fact alone makes me pick Verizon. I live in an area with AT&T 3G coverage but I do drive around my state a lot. Most of that travel would be on EDGE coverage on AT&T but verizon has 3G almost over the entire state.

I have a 32gig Ipad and that has been plenty of space for me. I see no need to store huge amounts of music on there. I do store a decent amount of movies for my son to watch on long trips.

Can someone clarify the data plans for Verizon? I have done some research and apparently you have to pay a $35 activation fee initially in addition to the $20+ monthly data fee... If you turn off the 3g for 60+ days and then turn it back on you have to re-activate it with Verizon for a $55+ monthly data charge.
Verizon has been pretty quiet regarding their plans but apparently their mi-fi and Xoom 3g usage is the same way? I would rather have Verizon coverage but not if I get screwed...

"Verizon's Executive Director of Corporate Communications, Brenda Raney, also confirmed to Macworld that, like AT&T, Verizon will not charge an activation fee to begin service, or even a reactivation fee if you cancel your service and start it up again a few months later."

To me the 32GB unit is the sweet spot for price/storage. That's what I bought for myself and my dad for the first-gen iPad. In terms of AT&T vs. Verizon, to me AT&T makes a lot more sense because I travel a fair amount abroad. I use my iPad much more while traveling than at home, and to the extent I use it while I'm in my hometown, it's on wi-fi. YMMV.

I'm thinking about getting one of these but I'm trying to figure out what the hell I'd use it for?

Besides comics, web browsing and netflix on the go I can't seem to justify the $629 price tag.

My question would be do you sit on the couch and normally have a laptop on the coffee table? I have a white macbook and it never gets used anymore. I use my ipad instead.

Wouldn't that really depend on the games though? Some games are honestly pretty small... between 20MB and 100MB, but then you have the big monster games that are 500MB+ that tend to take up a lot of space. These games, in my opinion, tend to be suited for the iPad better because they're usually games with grander interfaces (action games, shooters, etc) that I find a bit harder to play on a small screen.

The only problem I have with the iPad and games is that Apple really hasn't considered properly syncing content between multiple iOS devices and games that are not the same thing but are. I know that sounds odd, but what I'm referring to is like Gameloft's Dungeon Hunter 2 and Dungeon Hunter 2 HD. They are the same game, but one is designed for the iPad. The problem is, if I bought the iPad one (in addition to already owning the normal DH2), I could not sync saves between these because they are technically different titles.

This doesn't even include the fact that the only way to share saves between two iOS devices is to first sync the device with the newer save and then sync the device with the older save. Hopefully, WiFi syncing will make this considerably better.

I am thinking about getting a 16gb wifi and just adding the 4gb plan to my iPhone to handle the 3G. That way if I have my laptop I can also use that as well.

16gb 3g Verizon black ipad2 must be the least popular version. Everything else is 2-3 weeks shipping now at the Apple Store except that one.

Looks like it is the 64gb one that has the shortest shipping time. All others are 2-3 weeks now.

Anyone with a 16gb iPad v1 care to comment? Do you wish you got 32gb instead?

Me. I have a ton of apps, books, and pdfs and a couple of videos, no music or podcasts, and I find I only have maybe 2-3 GB left. I wish I had gotten 32 or 64gb. I bought late on release day and the Apple store I was at only had 16gb. It was either that or wait as all the others were sold out. Should have waited.

That's a lot of stuff. Most can get by fine with the 16GB. It's usually music and large docs that set the stage. If you can move things around to your PC when needed 16GB goes a long way.

IMHO for most people any of the 3g equipped devices are a rape vs just picking up a MiFi and sticking it in a pocket.

If you light up your Gurkha Black Dragon cigar with a $100 bill and sip on a Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac, then get the 64GB 3G.

I ended up going to a Target near my work at 3:00pm yesterday and there wasn't anyone else there. They only had 5 black 64gb wifi models. I didn't care what color I got but wanted 16gb so I called a few other Targets in the area and all but one had the same thing. The one that had something different had 5 32gb white wifi units. Which is what I got. I was second in line and only waited an hour. I was paid and back in my car by 5:05pm. Not to bad all things considered.

My initial plan was to leave work at 3:00pm like I did and going straight to the apple store near my house. But I started doing google searches for the stores in my area and reports from people in the lines. I found tweets and other forum post from all of the four apple stores in my area and all od them had around 200 people in line. It became clear that wasn't going to happen.

I went to the apple store this morning and bought a grey smart cover, camera kit and Bluetooth keyboard. I was surprised they had a wall full of every smart cover color.

Now I just need to find a form fitting back cover that'll work with the smart cover "latch" along the lines of the cases speck makes for the mbp that I have and then I'll be all set.

So far I don't have any buyers remorse. I'm loving this thing. Made this reply from it.

I'm tempted to get an ipad 2 for $500, but being a cheapskate I'm even more tempted by a $350 refurb ipad 1.

Cameras would be cool, but for $150 savings I could almost buy an ipod touch 4th gen to complement the ipad 1 and still have cameras. Seems more useful maybe ?

Look at anands initial review on the performance on the main page. iPad 2 blows iPad 1 out of the water in what it's able to do performance wise.
