iPad envy - my android tablet feels useless these days

So I'm the guy who constantly told people to buy everything but an iPad. I own a galaxy tab 7 (gingerbread) myself and hacked a nook color as well and used them like souped up personal organizers. Worked well enough and I thought I knew my tablets until I really used my wife's new iPad 2 - forget just being an organizer, this iPad 2 thing is damn fun! Fun unlike anything I've experienced on my android tabs.

Perfectly slick, great battery life, eye candy but not over the top (live wall papers = useless battery waster to me), and with apps that blow away their android counterparts, I'm impressed! I'm sure ICS will smooth out some of the UI and crashing I experience time to time, but how the hell can people claim that the android eco system is as robust as the iOS'? From watching live tv on the cablevision app (android version only allows scheduling) to the hundreds of top shelf games and even some fun and slick music creation apps, the iPad experience is addictive while my android tablet experience has been mostly frustrating (can't get words with friends to work right, netflix always seems to opt for low-bitrate on android, etc. etc.)... My point is - all those people who say that (specs aside), the android tablet experience is equal to or better than the iPad - what are they smoking?

And video calling! My god, it's so seamless on the iPad that I'd say it's worth the purchase price for that alone. Why can't android do that right? Argh.

As much as I like android the IPAD really does kick some android ass

Same opinion here, im not really a fan of apple but the ipad 2 is currently the best tablet on the market.

Unfortunatly android has some of the best phone hardware and the software is just as good as apples, so owning an android phone is the logical choice. Which leaves you in the dilema of investing in two software platforms or buying an android tab so you do not need to repurchase alot of apps for the other platform.

Used both, honestly dont see enough of a difference between the two. I think there is better video codec support on Android and it supports flash(if that is a big deal to you). I also find on avg websites render better on Android. We actually had to purchase an iPad 2 in our office for the dev team to test our website.

Dunno. I'm loving my nook tablet after I rooted it. Maybe we're looking for different things in a tablet though.

google talk video is just as good as facetime, in fact the quality is a bit better in personal experience. also you're comparing the first ever android tablet with an OS that was never meant for tablets to the most recent ipad.

The upcoming one with the rumored high Res screen will be nice. Xga and no widgets is my biggest problem with the current one.

One of the few things I've learned in life is to try to be open to new things, I was a dedicated Apple hater till the iPad, even though I was an investor in the company.

In all fairness, ICS is supposed to be as good, although I've not used it yet..

iPad 3 should be pretty good as well.

Gave two as gifts - I think they're great as organizers, especially with some nice calendar widgets and such. And it's not fair to compare $129 (nook color) to $419. My annoyance is mostly the app situation - scrabble, for example, is so slick and seamless on the ipad but the android version just feels low rent in comparison. Words with Friends crashes on me and some apps (such as the excellent Tivo app) just aren't available on android

I agree. I was gifted a Galaxy Tab too. I haven't played much with the Ipad 2, but almost all the games (ans some apps) I want are exclusively on that!

There are things about Android that annoy me but apps isn't one of them.

We already had iPad1 and iPad2 in the house before I bought my GTab. So I knew exactly what I was buying and why. I guess that's why I love it. GTab is very unique tablet. I'm sorry if you bought the gimped Wifi version with Nook Color internal.

The iPad is a solid device, and it's really apples to oranges when you compare a 7" Gingerbread Android tablet to the iPad. The iPad should be that much better; the Android's screen is too small and is running a not-made-for-tablets OS.

The iPad 2 is what got me to give up Android. I liked Android on the phone but not the tablet. I wasn't dealing with two ecosystems though. At the time the best Android tablet was the Transformer and it just didn't go it for me at all so my Android phone had to go, iPhone 4S it is. I really do use my iPad more than I thought I would when I bought it, it's a great device.

This is one of the reasons that I haven't bought a tablet yet. Hopefully ICS will be a turning point for android tablets as I will probably want to buy something in March or April.

My original plan was to get a tablet after I got the Galaxy Nexus. However, the Nexus has done its job so well that I have no problem waiting (and waiting) for the "perfect tablet" to come out.

I like the build of the iPad 2 and Transformer 2. I like Android more than iOS, but app development (for tablets) is unquestionably better on iOS. All that said, there aren't any apps/uses I can think of that justify the ~$500 price tag of either tablet, so I'm content to wait and enjoy the hell out of my Nexus in the mean time.

I agree with the OP, nothing can touch the iPad right now...the only issue is the price, $500 is a bit steep for something most people want but don't NEED imho, people need phones, but a tablet is a nice to have for me.

There are okay alternatives at cheaper price points, I have Playbook which is good for $200 but definitely not worth $500, the Kindle Fire is good but limited right now. Hopefully Apple will keep around the iPad 2 at a cheaper price when the 3 comes out, or ICS can evolve into a worthy competitor.

My main praise for my iPAd2 over the Android tablets is form factor. The 4:3 of the iPad for every day use is so much better than the Tablets that are widescreen. For me it makes typing so much easier.
I use my ipad for surfing the web and that is where my Transformer, I feel was better. It had flash support and didn't crash the browser as much as my iPad does. It get at least 1 browser crash a day with my ipad2.

Tablets are nothing but novelty value. They're a complete waste of money for the most part.

While I still recognize the iPad2 as being the best tablet on the market, I wouldn't buy it because of my opinion of tablets in general unless there's a fire sale on them like there was for the HP Touchpad.
I bought the HP Touchpad during the fire sale and it's collecting dust for the most part because I have a smartphone, laptop, and desktop that already fulfill all my needs.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II, an i3 Intel laptop(It's almost as thin as the iPad2, completely mobile, doesn't warm my testicles, and isn't gimped like all tablets and atom netbooks are today) that cost me the same as an iPad2, and a workhorse i7 860 quad core desktop that can be overclocked to 4GHz if needed be.

Maybe sometime in the future, I'll believe in the tablet bandwagon...but just not now.
I used to feel the same way about smartphones, but I'm still skeptical of tablets at best.

Laughable. If anything computers have become the novelty.

TONS of people who had computers and bought/were bought tablets. They no longer use their desktops/laptops (for the most part) and do all of their web/email on their tablets.

This is a tech forum and many here like to use benchmarks as a measuring stick for their penis. In the real world they are largely irrelevant when the user experience is persevere. 99.9% of the population doesn't' need anything more than a computer that can go browse the web, check email, and watch the occasional web video. Tablets can do all of that.

Even an Ultrabook isn't as mobile as an iPad2. Also Ultrabooks hover around $1k, so no, your laptop is neither as mobile or costs the same as an iPad2.

Well, you are using a nook and a gtab. Android tablets are equal to apples offering but only with HC or higher. I really hate people hating on android when they say my nook is not as good as an ipad. The nook is a fucking book reader. It was never meant to be a tablet. Seriously folks, why compare the 2? I have a real android tablet, the transformer, and while I like the ipad2 I also like my transformer. The only reason I chose the transformer over the ipad2 was 1. SD card and 2. I really despise itunes. other than that they are pretty much the same.

What's up with this?

I don't want to accuse you of anything, but this comes across as calling someone a shill without explicitly calling them a shill.

Why? Because I'm interested in seeing his Gingerbread 7" Galaxy Tab. I don't doubt he has Nook Color. Lot of people have that. But very few people own 7" Galaxy Tab, especially the WiFi version. Only the uninformed bought the WiFi version which had the downgraded SoC and missing GPS along with 3g radios. People who were truly interested in 7" Galaxy Tab all bought the fire sale 3g carrier versions which had the superior hardware and could be had cheaper than the WiFi version. There's no official Gingerbread update to the Wifi 7" GTab. Gingerbread update for P1010 Wifi GTab was only leaked in Europe just few days ago. Sure OP could've flashed that but I have my doubts. So I was simply curious to see it.
