Can somebody give me the run down of both Apple iPad and HP Slate? Something of detailed description including pros and cons? My uncle been bragging so much about "almost getting his hand on an iPad" What's so good about an iPad anyway? Well I'm hoping somebody tell me :( and I also heard about HP slate somewhere. Help me out guys! Guys I already have a laptop I'm satisfy with. One of those tablet kind of thing looks fun.... I heard Apple makes a killing for each one they sells....

Well, my first piece of advice would be to go to an Apple store or Best Buy and play with an ipad. See if you like it. See if you like the tablet concept. The Slate is not out yet..rumored release is sometime in June for like $550.

Bottom line: if you don't think tablets are a viable product, then you won't like either. If you like the way the iPod Touch and the iPhone work, then you will probably love the iPad. If you dont like the way they work, and want/need a 'regular' install of Windows in tablet pc form, then the Slate is a good bet.

Here is a rumored internal HP slide comparing the two.

I think these x86 WinTel tablets are an evolutionary dead ends, as are iPads. Both are example of trying to morph a platform designed for something else into doing tablet work. Slate is shrinking a PC into a Tablet, while iPad is stretching an iPod Touch to do the same.
Convergence is going to be in the middle, devices that don't carry all the excess luggage of PCs but still deliver the full capability of one. Probably Android+ARM will be the first to get there. Tablets have the ability to be primary home computing devices for a lot of people without sacrificing battery life or portability.

I don't know. It seems as cellphones increase in capability they would start to eat into the space that tablets would occupy.

I suppose it depends on if tablets evolve into laptop replacements.

That being said, I think tablets are cool and will have no problems shelling out for one at some point down the road.

I'd buy a tablet style netbook for $300 right now.

Are there any?

The market still has a long way to go.

The iPad is currently very restricted and dumbed down, and will probably drop a couple hundred $ in the next year or so.

The HP slate will probably suck (it has a desktop OS on it), but it is only one of many other tablets on the horizon. There are a couple android based tablets already announced, and there will surely be more.

Best bet is to wait. Unless you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket :)

I personally hope that tablets take off. I'm looking to start a small business in the near future for home / home office computer consulting and repair, and I'll be carrying around my personal laptop for diagnostic purposes. I'd rather be able to hand customers a small, cheap tablet to digitally sign contracts and disclaimers than either A) print the documents and later file them away, or B) allow them to use my laptop to "digitally" sign the documents (by checking a box and typing their name...).

Of course, I'm also the type that can't stand browsing the web on my cell phone, even with a decent-sized touch screen. If the screen is less than 8-9" diagonal or so, I can't stand it for more than a quick search.

The problem with using an iPad for signing documents is you don't want people signing things with their fingers. But I think you can get a capacitive stylus if you need one. It won't be nearly as accurate as true pen input device with hundreds of levels of pressure sensitivity, but it won't cost as much either.

Exactly. It would be roughly the same thing as signing a digital screen for your driver's license, credit card payment at a B&M store, etc.

It would make things so much easier on two levels: first, no physical papers to keep track of, just files; second, "are these hardly-legible squiggles your signature?" should hold up a lot better in court than "did you check this box to agree to the terms on this contract?" ;)

There have been tablets out for years that do this. My landlord from 2006-2008 had a hybrid laptop/tablet for this.

You don't want an iPad for this because 1) there's no stylus, 2) You don't save documents in files, 3) have access to a file system, 4) can't really print out documents, 5) and probably quite a few other reasons that I can't think of now.

The iPad is purely a consumption device. Don't even consider it for anything productive.

lol

This from the guy who has lambasted the tablet sector as being useless because the iPad is "not mobile enough."

Where did I do that? Quote please. Just want to see the extent of your lack of reading comprehension.

Well, in the iPad review thread you mocked the lack of an SD slot, which I don't think the Notion Adam has, per leaked specs.

you said:

Well, at least it has a soft keyboard. But if you are on vacation and want to be able to move pics from your camera SD card, gotta bring laptop anyways. So iPad is kind of redundant at this point.

Then you had this gem:
1.5lb, 10+ inch tablet is not a 'mobile device,' unless you have 11 inch pockets.
It has same input method and OS as a mobile device, but it's not anymore mobile than a netbook. So basically you get the limitations of a mobile OS without getting the mobility benefit.

Let's see...the Notion Ink Adam is 10+ inches...same input as a mobile device...sounds like your criticisms of the ipad would apply here too. Oh I forgot, if it doesn't have the Apple logo then it is automatically super cool.

Oh really. I would love to see a tablet of the iPad's quality for $199. Got any links?

first...the ipad has been out a whole 4 days. Every review I have read pointed out more flaws than features. So comparing something to that quality.....ummm.......yea

And second, it will happen. Let the Apple fanbois pay the premium for an inferior product that doesn't do everything it should and tries to do things that no one cares about. I'll wait another year or so and buy a product that is actually worth the money. Oh wait....I already have a laptop for typing up documents and a cell phone for general web surfing. I don't have a use for a 10" brick. I could buy an HD2 for that much and it does 4x as much.

ummm, links?

If the quality is so bad, it should be even easier?

every apple product i've came across has VERY HIGH build quality, much higher than the plastic-filled-netbooks. As far as functionality goes... everybody knows that the ipad is not really made for productivity, but more for "play". probably someone will come up with a remote app for it, and use it's wireless to trigger IR signals to turn t.v.'s, receivers, etc., on and off. I mean, remotes (high end Home Theater) are getting as big as the ipad anyways, and costs 10x more. Imagine if someone released a universal remote to the ipad...

The idea behind the ipad is not the hardware itself, though it's quite good. It's the platform: iPhone OS. That's what makes it such a good product

Both devices are inferior to a $300 Netbook.

Link me to a Netbook for even $500 that has an LED IPS screen that supports multi touch.
Netbooks are CRAP on a stick, they can do more sure, but they suck balls. I'd take both a Slate and an iPad over any Netbook I've ever used.
