Netbooks are CRAP on a stick, they can do more sure, but they suck balls. I'd take both a Slate and an iPad over any Netbook I've ever used.

I do remember saying iPad is not a mobile device, but I am still waiting for you to show me where I "lambast the tablet sector." Mobility has to do with size, not input method. Neither iPad nor Adam are mobile devices. iPad, however has all the limitations of a mobile device without providing any more mobility than tablets like Adam, or netbooks for that matter.

You can get a $300($279 after mail in rebate) Netbook that runs Windows XP, has 14 hours of battery life, a 10 inch screen, and a 160GB hard drive.

The screen's not slightly better, that's like saying a Corvette is slightly faster than a Nissan Sentra. If you think a TN is even in the same ballpark as an IPS I don't know what to tell you. PC's have tons of peripherals & a shit ton more software. But I can do 95% of my daily computer work on my iPhone. And I can do things on my iPhone I cannot do on my PC. It goes both ways, there definitely isn't this 10,000x gap people are making it out to me. Also Netbook don't perform better, that's laughable. I've used $300 netbooks and they're slow as shit. iPads aren't blazing fast by any stretch but respond better than a netbook.

Umm, isn't saying that an entire product sector (tablets) are not mobile - when that is one of their major advertising and selling points - a pretty damning assessment of said products?

One of the largest appeals of tablets is their mobility, and you say they lack that...sounds like you think those products don't have any place in someone's gadget lineup.

QTF, I own neither but if I ever have enough to get one, I'll be getting an iPad. I guess I'm one of those retarded enthusiasts who would rather have something less powerful. I've used tablets before with TN screens and I've used the iPad with the IPS screen.

TN simply cannot compare. TN's cause immediate eyestrain when viewed at orientations that are not their native orientation due to the color shift at different viewing angles (your two eyes already view the screen at differing angles). A TN screen that's natively landscape will not be good for viewing anything in portrait.

IPS screens do not suffer this, and any future slate worth its salt *must* utilize an IPS screen if it's intended to change orientations.

I think the iPad is a spectacular device, but I hope that Android powered tablet linked earlier will come out soon. The iPad is not meant to replace a netbook. The ways people use the two can be very different.

Super thin and light? Check.
Very long lasting battery? Check.
Excellent, sharp screen? Check
Wireless connectivity? Check.
Excellent user interface and ergonomics? Check.
Silent? Check.

The biggies are obvious - no Flash support, no webcams, no ability to become a mass storage drive, and no multitasking.

I can't imagine using a netbook or convertible tablet for my business and pleasure. Because, well, I already have, and it sucks.

Apparently, for some people it is a massively powerful computer lol.

If one sees it as a "small, convenient, just check the web and email kinda thing," then I don't see how tablets (of which iPad is one of many) cannot be seen as a threat. And if you do indeed view the two as in competition as a "check the web+email" device, I am at a loss as to why one would prefer a bulkier, heavier, lower battery life netbook over a tablet...whether an iPad, HP Slate, or the new one giz talked about today.

Yes and no. The difference is how one physically uses it. A netbook cannot be handled like a pad. It's about the form factor. When I had a netbook I would surf the web on it but had to control it via the traditional touchpad and mouse keys. I could type out longer responses to emails with ease. I could lay in bed and watch streaming flash movies with ease. What I couldn't do, and what the iPad can, is:

use all my fingers to browse the web
read it like a book or magazine in any orientation I desire
power it on instantly to check for directions / restaurants with googlemaps and gps
use it as an instantly available (instant on) notepad / calendar / organizer / calculator / portfolio album / mp3 player

A netbook is a laptop made smaller. The iPad is a notePAD / organizer / book made more advanced. Two different animals, two different uses.

Can you imagine what a few years of refinement will look like on the iPad?

As far as the Slate goes, W7 with touch enabled is a abortion, and the Slate is still vaporware.

No camera is a biggie, because there are many situations that would require a camera built into a portable notepad. Want to record a client's business card information? With the iPad you can't take a picture of the card and import it automatically into your contacts. Or you're remodeling your home and need to take photos with attached notes of different faucet designs. Other examples abound.

No multi-tasking. While surely to be fixed with a jailbreak, it's currently not cool if, say, you're using the pad in-car as a GPS and suddenly need to use it to record a voice note from a phonecall. And your GPS turn by turn stops. And you're in the city. Fun.

No mass storage. Duh. It's supposed to be an advanced notepad. Notepads store data. Enough said.

No Flash. Instantly cuts you off from displaying a lot of what the web has to offer. Need to show your clients your online portfolio? That'd better not be in flash. A video? That'd better not be in flash as well. Want to stream porn? Sorry.

I think we need a form or a comprimise between the Slate and the iPad...

Imagine a full blown OS that has a special skin, much like the iPad, that can make the UI much more useable. Now imagine being able to dock the device and use a more traditional UI involving a mouse/keyboard.

Perhaps a bad idea, but I think both devices go to opposite extremes.

Not to mention the most obvious thing imho. No iChat. A backgrounded IM client just makes sense for a data service portable device. Current iphone IM clients means you have to completely interrupt your workflow to repsond to a IM. No reason this should have been left out.

And no, it's not a damning assessment, as long as there are enough features to make having a larger device worthwhile. iPad is basically offering stripped down features of a mobile device with mobility of a netbook. That doesn't mean that all slates and tablets are going to follow this approach. Some of them will actually deliver a feature set that will be competitive with a small notebook and not just a media player.

I can imagine that with a few years of refinement iPad may catch up to Android devices coming out this year. Maybe a year to get a webcam, another to get dual mode e-ink display, then add some multitasking, maybe after a couple years throw in the towel on fighting off Flash, add a 1080p playback capable CPU with HDMI output, and voila, by 2014 or so, it will be on par with Adam of 2010. 🙂

every apple product i've came across has VERY HIGH build quality, much higher than the plastic-filled-netbooks.

They do feel good, but already we've seen an iPad dead after a light drop on carpet, which reminds me too much of seeing firsthand an iPhone die from a 1.5 foot drop to a wooden table.

I've dropped my Asus 1005HA onto my cement garage floor and the only result was a small crack in the plastic. Apple products feel more solid than plastic fantastic netbooks solid, but it's a tactile illusion.

You can use an iPad as a VNC, you can IM on it, you could create music from scratch if you wanted. Hell I made a few beats on my iPhone using Beatmaker which I sold for $$. You can also create and edit documents. Aside from not being able to install PC apps, I don't see what I couldn't do on an iPad, minus being able to plug in a USB device like a printer or scanner and use it. And I guess the lack of Flash would be a dealbreaker if you're into Farmville or some other Flash game. But there are apps to accomplish just about anything you need to do. I honestly don't even use my iPhone or Touch much for multimedia because they do can do many other things. While an iPad isn't as full featured as a netbook it's far from the crippled device people are making it out to be. And once it's Jailbroke it will have even more apps.

Saying a device will be awesome after you jailbreak it does not really show quality in the walled garden design. It shows it's flaw.
