Roughly same ballpark.

Haven't done side by side testing though.

Edit:

You can just downgrade back to 8 if you don't like 9.

Thanks, good to know. Installing now as a mater of fact.

Just be aware that after Apple releases the new OS (iOS 9), Apple will only continue to sign the old OS (iOS 8.4.1) for a limited time. So, you should be good for the next few days or so, but after that you will be permanently on iOS 9 if you don't downgrade before Apple stops signing iOS 8.4.1.

That said, I see few compelling reasons to go back to iOS 8.4.1. Both iOS 8.4.1 and iOS 9.0 beta are slow, but iOS 9 has new features. The main reason IMO to downgrade is if iOS 9 is incompatible with some of your software. However, what I've noticed is that most of the stuff that was problematic for me in terms of compatibility has already been updated for iOS 9, mostly in August or earlier, with a few stragglers getting fixed in the past week.

iOS 9 also seems to be pretty stable. My main issue with it is on my iPhone 5s, and that's battery life. iOS 9 seems to kill my battery quickly. Then again battery life seems OK on my iPad 2 and iPad Air 2.

Why? The GM should be out tomorrow.
True, although sometimes it takes a day or so before the download is easily available. Sometimes on the first day of release it's hard to get the download at any decent speed, or else occasionally the download will simply quit.

With the issue of Apple signing the old OS release on for a limited time after the GM is released, it's good to do the testing as early as possible, just in case you need to downgrade.

For example, last year I installed iOS 8 on my iPad 2 around launch time but then after a few days use I downgraded back to iOS 7 because iOS 8.0 was simply too slow and was kinda buggy too. If I had waited another week or whatever, then I wouldn't have been able to downgrade. I didn't bother upgrading again until iOS 8.1 came out, since people said it was faster than 8.0.

BTW, indeed iOS 8.1 was somewhat faster, but still wasn't as fast as 7.1.x. Unfortunately now in late 2015, iOS 7.1.x is already losing software support. Mostly it's still fine, but those holding off upgrading may need to upgrade eventually.

So Oyeve, how are you liking iOS 9, and what do you think of the speed (or lack thereof)?

This is the reason why. All my ipad users will be updsting and i want to make sure the app works on nine before they update. It works btw.

But just because the app will work on the current beta doesn't mean it will work on the GM. It's been a month since the last beta was released, a lot could have changed.

9 is ok. The added features are long overdo. Seems like when I use the new features I was like, "what? ios didn't do this years ago?", like the transportation in maps, but its welcome nonetheless. Doesn't seem any slower than 8.4.1 and the app works fine. I'll load it on my iPad 4 tonight.

iOS 9 isn't out until Sept. 16, so you have time to play before you have to decide if you want to downgrade or not.

Gold Master for iOS 9.0 is now out for developers. Not available yet for the public beta program though.

OS X 10.11 El Capitan GM candidate also now out. Got a notice to install it - public beta program.

iOS 9.1 Public Beta 1 is now out.

I'm guessing 9.1 will allow Split View for 3rd party apps like in the iOS press event, cuz that doesn't work right now in 9.0.

Hence, I'm downloading it now.

Main thing is probably support for WatchOS 2.0

Still doesn't work. I guess the updated versions of the apps that they demo'd haven't been released yet.

However I get the impression that my iPad 2 has been sped up by the 9.1 update. Still quite slow, but probably faster than both 8.4 and 9.0.

iOS 9.1 Public Beta 1 flies on iPad Air 2 (A8X).

Seems fine on iPhone 5s (A7) too although there have been rare occasions I've noticed a delay (as before in iOS 8.x).

It's still ok on the iPhone 5 (A6) as well but the lag is more noticeable at times (as before). I'd be able to use this full time though, no problem.

As mentioned though, the lag is bad on the iPad 2. I couldn't use this machine full time. I'd rip my hair out. However the last version of iOS I'd be able to use full time for an iPad 2 was iOS 7.1.2. iOS 8 was also too slow.

Note though, despite the lag mentioned in 9.1 Public Beta 1, it's probably faster than both 8.4.1 and the last iOS 9.0 beta. It's definitely no worse in any case. iOS 9.1 PB1 is also very stable.

The performance as described isn't surprising given the speeds of the SoCs:

69017.png

It should be noted though that there have been significant speed ups over the last year. In this bench my iPad Air 2 gets 2339 in iOS 9.1 PB1. In contrast my iPad 2 gets 25024. IOW the iPad Air 2 is 10.7X as fast as the iPad 2 in this bench.

Also of note is that here it gets 5224 but at launch it was 5905. Right now with PB1 it gets 3542.

Split view requires app support? That seems wrong, if it is correct it is incredibly lame...

Uh...iOS apps haven't exactly been designed for arbitrary resolutions until very recently. It probably needs app support and is totally reasonable.

If apps aren't designed for a tall, narrow, variable layout, they can't support it.

There will have to be at least minimal changes in the manifests included with the app. I don't know how anyone could expect existing apps to work correctly without modifications.

Sure, there's precedent for jailbreak tweaks that blow-up phone apps for iPad, and they have all the layout problems and glitches you should expect them to have.

I just noticed something while reading Apple's site on the new iPhones. It says Reachability works with the standard non-Plus model.

Did the 2014 iPhone 6 (standard, non-Plus) support reachability with iOS 8?

Can someone with a 2014 iPhone 6 (standard, non-Plus) try it with iOS 9.1 beta? Just double-touch the home button. Don't press it -- it's the touch-sensitive metal ring around the touchID sensor that activates Reachability.

I don't have the iPhone 6 but... Yes Reachability worked on the regular iPhone 6 in iOS 8.

iPhone 6 and reach ability has worked since day one. Was running iOS 9 gm until yesterday and it worked. Running iOS 9.1 b1 and it's working as well

Think reachability was only designed to work with 6/6+. Don't think it works with 5s. Don't have one to test with any more though.

Yes Reachability (on iOS that is) was introduced alongside last years' bigger iPhones, and has never worked with any other models (except now the 6s and 6s+ of course).
