waiting for comex still. which is better iphone-dev team or ih8snow tool?

It says on some sites you can avoid SHIFT-restore and upgrade to 4.3.1 then run redsn0w? that true?

you don't need to do a shift restore with redsn0w. upgrade to 4.3.1 via itunes (you will of course lose all your JB apps unless you use PKGbackup or something similar). restore your phone. and then run redsn0w. it will apply the JB patch directly to the phone.

hmm i think i'd rather wait for a 4.3.1 which will upgrade normally and break (comex) rather than lose all those settings again.

ah heck i was thinking i would lose my email/wifi/vpn settings. they all restored flawlessly this time. maybe it was the 3.x to 4.x move that lost everything.

redsn0w worked almost flawlessly (crashed on limerain download), had to run in xp compat mode - after shift-restoring again (grr). tense moment because it was hard to get into dfu/recovery mode it kept power cycling after the apple logo.

so everything is good. i'm not sure moving from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 is a good use of time lol. i dont use any of the new features. but 4.3.2 is coming out soon so its easier to move to 4.3.1 now

itunes - shift-restore downloaded 4.3.1 for my device
itunes - when it is done - you kill the itunes window when it says to start a new phone or restore
redsn0w - open the ipsw - let it do its thing
open cydia - let it upgrade and reboot

power off/on to make sure its all good (untethered)
open itunes - tell it to restore the last backup of your device - takes like a minute
open itunes store - update all apps
good to go.

Thanks...

I'm going to try later tonight. I just bit the bullet and upgraded my 4.0 to 4.3.1 and am still waiting on the initial boot to see if all of my stuff is gone from before.

I was putting off upgrading but my voicemail stopped working. I have to dial my phone number to check them which is a huge inconvenience compaged to just point & click.

Downloading the ios file was the longest part of the jailbreak. After that, it only took about 5 minutes.

And now to spend a couple of hours probably to get my phone back to how it was.

I like the skin... it's nifty. I tried out WinterBoard, but it doesn't seem to work with folders. Whenever you open a folder, it shows the original "skin" for the phone (including your background) and then it goes back to the WinterBoard theme when the folder closes.

Why restore the device before or after using redsn0w? I jail broke my iPhone 4;

1.) An iPhone at 4.3, from iTunes updated to 4.3.1 and saved the downloaded 4.3.1 firmware

2.) Used redsn0w with the downloaded 4.3.1 firmware to jail break

3.) A few reboots later and finishing up in Cydia, I had an iPhone 4 jail broke without losing any of my previous settings

When you jailbreak an iPhone, part of the process involves moving some of the contents of the OS partition over to the data partition under a randomly named directory and symlinking it. When you update a jailbroken iPhone in turn it restores the OS partition, but the earlier files that were moved to the data partition are still there. As a result you lose a couple hundred megabytes from those old files unless you do a restore to first wipe the data partition.

Does tetherme use adhoc or infrastructure for wifi hotspot? The Xoom and Playbook does not recognise the network created using MyWi.

I am on iPhone 4 4.1, jailbroken using limeware, have iTunes 10.2, but when I want to update IOS to 4.3.1 I get the message "The iPhone "name of phone" cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or temporarily unavailable" Is it really because the server is unavailable or something to do with Apple having recognised I have a jailbroken iPhone thus unwilling to update?

Thanks for the help.

Wait a sec, Peelucky. The current iOS version is 4.3.2, not 4.3.1, so you'll have to update manually anyway! You can do this by... I believe it's holding shift and clicking on the restore button. This will let you manually select an ipsw file to upgrade to. You'll just have to find the right ipsw file beforehand.

iOS hotspots are infrastructure.

As for your update, check your hosts file. It's likely the jailbreak tool you used hardcoded gs.apple.com, which has a new IP address.

i tried jailbreaking awhile ago, but couldn't manage to get my device to go into DFU mode.

every guide i tried following didn't work. even following the onscreen instructions for (greenpoison? something else?) didn't work.

so i'm now on 4.3.1 with little hope of actually managing a jailbreak.

It's really not that hard. Look at the instructions before hand and try to stick to how many seconds they say to hold each combination. It takes a few tries to get the hang of it but you pick it up eventually.

I use redsnow and it's pretty good about walking you through it.

That's exactly what i did, manually by holding the shift then restore by pointing to an ipsw file yet it still gave me that error.

When you jail broke it the first time, did you tell Cydia to save your SHSH blobs? When updating, you want iTunes to 'verify' with Cydia instead of Apple. Signing for 4.3.1 closed some time ago

cydia was broke for a while so i bet lots of folks did not get their blobs and amazon ec2 is broken now still for cydia so be careful folks.

and remove the hosts entry it is kinda pointless these days

4.3.2 is equally jailbreakable. There's nothing lost by Apple closing the 4.3.1 signing window, so everyone who is freshly jailbreaking should use 4.3.2 regardless.

I know this. OP specifically mentioned 4.3.1 so I used that as a reference. But you're right, 4.3.2 is equally as jailbreakable. That said, I haven't gotten around to doing it yet as I just got to 4.3.1 about 2 weeks ago. It's not that it's hard, it's that I'm lazy...
