hmm i think i'd rather wait for a 4.3.1 which will upgrade normally and break (comex) rather than lose all those settings again.
ah heck i was thinking i would lose my email/wifi/vpn settings. they all restored flawlessly this time. maybe it was the 3.x to 4.x move that lost everything.
redsn0w worked almost flawlessly (crashed on limerain download), had to run in xp compat mode - after shift-restoring again (grr). tense moment because it was hard to get into dfu/recovery mode it kept power cycling after the apple logo.
so everything is good. i'm not sure moving from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 is a good use of time lol. i dont use any of the new features. but 4.3.2 is coming out soon so its easier to move to 4.3.1 now
itunes - shift-restore downloaded 4.3.1 for my device
itunes - when it is done - you kill the itunes window when it says to start a new phone or restore
redsn0w - open the ipsw - let it do its thing
open cydia - let it upgrade and reboot
open cydia - add http://cydia.hackulo.us
add installous 4 / 3g unrestrictor / etc
power off/on to make sure its all good (untethered)
open itunes - tell it to restore the last backup of your device - takes like a minute
open itunes store - update all apps
good to go.

When you jailbreak an iPhone, part of the process involves moving some of the contents of the OS partition over to the data partition under a randomly named directory and symlinking it. When you update a jailbroken iPhone in turn it restores the OS partition, but the earlier files that were moved to the data partition are still there. As a result you lose a couple hundred megabytes from those old files unless you do a restore to first wipe the data partition. Why restore the device before or after using redsn0w? I jail broke my iPhone 4
iOS hotspots are infrastructure.Does tetherme use adhoc or infrastructure for wifi hotspot? The Xoom and Playbook does not recognise the network created using MyWi.
I am on iPhone 4 4.1, jailbroken using limeware, have iTunes 10.2, but when I want to update IOS to 4.3.1 I get the message "The iPhone "name of phone" cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or temporarily unavailable" Is it really because the server is unavailable or something to do with Apple having recognised I have a jailbroken iPhone thus unwilling to update?
Thanks for the help.
i tried jailbreaking awhile ago, but couldn't manage to get my device to go into DFU mode.
every guide i tried following didn't work. even following the onscreen instructions for (greenpoison? something else?) didn't work.
so i'm now on 4.3.1 with little hope of actually managing a jailbreak.
Wait a sec, Peelucky. The current iOS version is 4.3.2, not 4.3.1, so you'll have to update manually anyway! You can do this by... I believe it's holding shift and clicking on the restore button. This will let you manually select an ipsw file to upgrade to. You'll just have to find the right ipsw file beforehand.
That's exactly what i did, manually by holding the shift then restore by pointing to an ipsw file yet it still gave me that error.
4.3.2 is equally jailbreakable. There's nothing lost by Apple closing the 4.3.1 signing window, so everyone who is freshly jailbreaking should use 4.3.2 regardless. When you jail broke it the first time, did you tell Cydia to save your SHSH blobs? When updating, you want iTunes to 'verify' with Cydia instead of Apple. Signing for 4.3.1 closed some time ago
