rpzero - linster's suggestion does improve DAE from what I originally got (~17-18x) using audiocatalyst. make sure that you have DMA checked.

Got the drive...hooked it up....upgraded firmware...seems to be working fine. Just one question. I can only get CDRW discs to write at 4x. Is that because the discs are only certified at 4x or what? I got the 12x10x32, I'm sure of it.

Hmm...my CD burning software is not recognizing my new Iomega as a CD recorder. They only recognize my old CDR which is an Ricoh 6x. Anyone have an idea how to make programs such as CDRWin, Nero, and WinOnCD recognize my new recorder? Do I need the latest version of those programs? Will updating it actually help? Or is it that those prgrams can only recognize one recorder only? I also have disk juggler and this is the only program that recognizes it as a CDR. Thanks

OK , easy question, I got the TDK version (in Cols.) it has version "1.02" firmware. Do I need to go in steps to "1.07"?

I had to upgrade Nero to version 5.0.3.8 to recognize the drive. Good Luck :)

HELP...

If you got a Best Buy price match how FAR is that Best Buy from the LOCAL CompUSA?

I'm really thinking about suing Best Buy for how horrible they were to me today and that info would be a big HELP thanks.

*** FOR THOSE UNABLE TO FLASH TO FIRMWARE 1.07***

I think I've figured out a way for you people having trouble w/ the firmware program. In the case of some, when you execute the program, the pointer changes to the hourglass shape and nothing happens. If you hit Ctl alt del, you should see the program listed. Complete the following steps to be able to flash.

1. First and foremost, disable DMA and restart your computer.
------You may have to uninstall EZCD creator at this point------

2. Take the ZipCD and look for the file wnaspi32.dll in the setup folder.

3. Replace the wnaspi32.dll in the C:\windows\setup file w/ the file on the CD-ROM and restart your computer.

4. Go into the ZipCD and look in the setup folder again. Run the Aspi32.exe program and click Upgrade. Restart once again.
5. Run the Firmware flashing program again and voila, it should work.
-----At this point, reinstall EZ CD creator------

Good luck

I got one today from my local CompUSA store in Norwalk, CT. I went there around 03.00 PM EST and they still had like 10 or so on the shelf.

Well, I'm sooo happy now. I bought 2 of these bad boys this morning. My brother was able to pre-order 4 more. I was so worried he wouldn't get any. Yes, we plan on making a profit from these wonderful new toys!!! Is that so bad?? I think not. We're just taking advantage of good old American Capitalism. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! What a great way finish this year and start 2001!

Thanks for the hottest post I've seen, next to my 12x 50 pack of Imation CD-R's for FREE!

Wooooo hoooooo! Time to play a little CS!!

FWIW I didnt have to upgrade Nero (using 5.0.3.1 currently) but did have to update cdrwin to 3.8d. Burned several .bins in cdrwin at 12x on 8x media with no probs (verbatim). This drive kicks ass.

Francodman, You are the man.
Thank you so much, my firmware update went off without a hitch. I would also like to thank mrVW, Wedesdo, and anyone else who helped with the firmware update problem. This is just one of the many reasons I love this forum.

Crap, I went to CompUSA and got there 5 minutes after openning - none left :(

Thought I was SOL, I was.

Turns out a friend of mine was there at opening and they never had any in stock!!!!!!
Checked their website to verify that it was in stock and everything!!!
Dammit.

Does anyone havve an extra they'd be willing to part with for a reasonable price? LMK

There is something fishy that CompUSA clerks are doing. I am from the New York City area and I went to the CompUSA on 5th Avenue and 36st. I looked around and there were people saying that the drive was out of stock so I was a little angry, but I realized that I could get a rain check and get the drive some other time. I decided to go up to a clerk behind the counter an ask him if I could get a rain-check for the iomega drive that was on sale. The guy looked at me for a split second then picked up a box from underneath the counter and said here! I was shocked, but I did not say anything. I took the drive and ran to the cash register. I guess I was lucky to get the drive, but I thought to myself why did the guy have it underneath the counter. Hmmmmmm

Yeah, they kinda hid it when I bought it too.

I went to get the drive a day before, but they were all "out" or so they said. I looked around the store and found a box that seemed orphaned and out of place... low and behold 3 Iomegas in there.. =)

Geez, judging by al these frustrated people here I'm probably pretty lucky to have gotten one this afternoon at CompUSA in Downtown Chicago; there were 31 left when I called and when I went in an hour later, there were like 6 on the shelf, ad maybe more in the back... The clerk knew how hot they were but nevertheless said some may even be available monday... Didn't have to camp out or anything...

Anyway, is anyone else disturbed by the varying amounts of cache these 12x10x32 IDE Plextor clones have? ranging from 1.8 on the IOMEGA to 2 on the Plextor to 4 on the Imation?

The Highland Park, IL CompUSA experience was kinda strange as well. The guy behind the tech help desk looked in the computer which said they had lots in stock still. Told me to go to the customer service desk and ask because 'maybe they had them locked up in back'. Asked cust serv and they said they had sold out an hour before. Ended up finding 2 at Best Buy in Deerfield and got one of those.

find out when they open (9 or 10am) and camp out there early for any chance... its about a block west of Michigan and Chicago; close to Watertower Place. good luck. Judging by the flunkies working there trying to give advice (Iomega? Sure, they MAKE(!) great burners! (LOL)...), and how slow these things sell out, Chicago downtown doesn't seen to be a center for tech bargain hunters... :)

I love the way how most people are trying to profit from these drives. So you buy 20 and flood EGay with them. There are 56 for sale last time I checked. Hmmm... shift the supply curve up and lower equilibrium prices... At the rate it's going, one will be lucky to sell them for $130, and not the $200 we all would've expected. Glad I returned my extra to CompUSA this morning, at least I made someone else's new year pleasant.
