Any news on why we can't change the id string of this iomega burner to a plextor? I'm sure everyone would like it to become a true plexor. Shouldn't we be able to since its the same drive?

inode,

Give the CompUSA in Springfield, NJ a call to see how many they have left in stock. Be sure to tell them to check in back too, since the boxes for 12x10x32 drives might not be on the shelves. When I got to the store at 10:30, there was barely any customers there and no sign of this particular Iomega drive. An employee in the area brought out a few from the back after I asked about them.

An update to my DAE post earlier for anyone interested...

It turns out DMA was not enabled on the drive in Win2k so now I get 31.5x DAE end speed using CD Speed 99 in both Win98 and Win2k on a 65 min CD. This is with 1.07 Firmware.

First of all, congrats to those who this update was easy.
Mine, well, was a major pain in the ass. 4 hours later, it's done. Hope this helps others.

Problem:

Running the 1.07 update just hangs. No display, nothing.

Scenario:

Windows 98 SE
ASUS CUSL2-C, Award BIOS ver ???
Running Adaptecs apsichk.exe: missing Aspienum.vxd
Running the 1.07 update in Safe mode: Error initializing winaspi32.dll
NOTE: The only, and I mean only, place I have control of Ultra DMA settings
is via the AWARDS BIOS. Thats it. Nothing via Control Panel, System,
Properties on the CD Drives (both Iomega and existing Memorex 48x) as
far as DMA settings.

Solution: (Steps I did, neccessary is questionable, I'm just glad I'm done.)

Get a hold of Aspienum.vxd. Put it into c:\windows\system.
Uninstalled all Adaptec stuff installed from Iomega CDs.
reboot.
Installed NERO 5.8 (ps: AstaLaVista, for a non-virus crack).
reboot.
FINALLY!! Was able to run Adaptec's APSI32.exe update. (I tried faking Adaptec
controllers till the cows came home, but all was shiite, no friggin luck.)
reboot.
WAMMO! Was now able to run 1.07 firmware update.

Special thanks to "Franko", who was extremely helpful.
Other thanks to MrVW, who was helpful to a point.

All of these problems with DMA have nothing to do with your drive and have everything to do with the Plextor update program and Adaptec's crappy ASPI stuff. Plextor should have never written the update program to use ASPI... stupid. And Windows98 does not support ASPI out of the box, which is why Windows98 users have problems... unless you installed something on your system (such as Adaptec's EZCD writer or other programs, or a SCSI controller) that puts the ASPI software on...

Actually Win2k doesnt support ASPI right out of the box either. When I did a fresh install about a week ago I had throw the aspi dlls in my winnt dir in order to get cdrwin to work.

I grabbed one of the drives at Best Buy today after striking out at CompUSA (Highland Park, IL) today. The Deerfield Best Buy had 2 on the shelf and no price was listed. Think I was lucky. I dled the 1.07 update and it went without a hitch with DMA enabled.

One question...the drive shows up as mode 4 and not udma 33 in the bios (my acer 50x cdrom shows up as udma 33) and in the win2k properties it shows up as DMA mode (not Ultra DMA mode). Is this what it is supposed to be?

mrVW, i have Windows98 and do not have EasyCD Writer or any SCSI stuff installed on my system... any chance that i'll successfully be able to update to firmware version 1.07?? Thanx. Is there anything that i need to know about other than the ASPI layer and the firmware updater? I'm a novice on firmware... please excuse me...

I'm thinking that the actual Plextor drives must come with some software that provides ASPI. I too found that Win2K clean install wouldn't work with Fireburner 1.06 (uses ASPI) -- even after I installed Adapted EzCD 4.02! So newer Adaptec EzCD doesn't use the same ASPI that some of these oddball programs use. Too bad the Plextor update program does!

Have you reviewed this web page?

I do have a SCSI adapter made specifically for my UMAX scanner installed. Does that count? I guess it all depends on the configuration of each system... HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE =)

The drive is supposed to be recognized as ata33. You can make it be recognized as UDMA by installing a jumper on the "reserved" pins but there is no reason to do so as it performs the same.

All right, here's a probably a reall newbie question, but I don't really know a lot about CD-RW's, but how does upgrading the firmware 1.04 to 1.07 help? Does it add features to it or...??? Thanks for the help.

Also, do you recommend using the programs the Drive comes with? or download some other programs to burn/rip CD's? I'm using the programs it comes with and so far, it's pretty easy and reliable.

inode: yeah, same here...I chanced a look at FW and someone posted the url...bought it, told some friends about it...but within 20 minutes, my friends told me it said "N/A" ...I was surprised, but hey, I got to place my order, heh.

I wonder if they'll ship Monday...I need it before Sunday.

Upgrading from the 1.04 to the 1.07 opens the drive up to all the Plextor features that their drives are known for (Full Clone CD, etc)...

As far as burning programs, with BURNProof, I'm not sure you need anything else unless you're copying (backing up) very hard to copy or protected disks. I'm using Nero 5.0.3.8 and it's very solid. I checked and it was using 0.98% CPU resources while burning at 12X with BURNProof Enabled. Very fast and solid.

Good Luck

Happy New Year to all :D

Oh, and using CDSpeed99, I'm getting upto 27X DAE on various audio CD's outter tracks...The inner ones, I still get 14X to 16X speed....:)

For DAE make sure DMA is on. Also, this is a CAV drive so you'll get a range from 14x-32x depending on where on the disc it's reading from.

mrVW-

Yeh. I did look at that page actually..thats how I found out where to put the files ;) Incidentally just putting those in there didnt work (neither did the reg entries). However the adaptec aspi updater finally worked and it sorted everything out. nero doesnt need aspi...wonder why cdrwin is still using it.

Firmware is a software program that runs on your cdrw, which defines the basic operations such as cdrw media detection (speed, type (80MB or 74MB). By updating the firmware you can change the fundamental behaviour of the device. But this does not mean you can design the firmware to do anything and everything... Hope that sheds some light on the subject. :)

I just used the firmware update without a hitch. First it says something about "device found at 3,0" then after 10 seconds later it's done. After reboot, the firmware reads 1.07. I'm also getting 17x-19x on the DAE using Xing Audio Catalyst. Do you have to use the provided jukebox software to get 32x DAE?
