Great deal!!! I'm wondering since I already have a Plex 12/10/32A if adding this drive would give me the "2 Plextors only" requirement to do the Disc At Once copying? Seems like overkill to have 2 12x burners in one system though. Maybe time to build a new system around it!!!!

Has anyone had luck with buying this drive in NJ at the B&M. If so, please let me know where. I bought one online this afternoon but I am afraid it maybe out of stock.

P.S. someone had mentioned that these drives can be bought from BestBuy for similar price...can anyone tell me if that is the case?

Thanks. :|

just want to clarify something... will i be able to take out the plugs from my old drive and put those right onto the new drive? or will i need to take out the cables from the main board or whatever and put new ones in there? sorry for going off-topic here, but i just want to know if someone with limited computer-hardware experience can do this. all i have done is inserted pci cards. thanks.

gev115,

Have no fear. You can use the same cables from your old CD-R.

The only thing you may have to check is if tyhe drive is set to Master or slave and set the new one accordingly. This only applies if you have two devices attached to the same cable. If you only have one IDE device on the cable where your CD-RW will be then don't worry about it, either setting is fine.

Slowone:
I went from 1.04 to 1.07, took about 10 seconds. 12x as secondary master with a toshiba 6702B as secondary slave. Win95b DMA enabled. Perhaps you should try the aspi fix others mentioned.

MrVW and Wedesdo; great job guys!

I just burned 698mb's in 8 minutes total including EZ-Creators houskeeping, actual burn time was just over 6 minutes.

GEV115, It's simple, it even comes with a video showing you step by step exactly what to do with the cables and plugs. They provide an ide cable that has places for 2 drives if your current one does not.

Anyone pick up any extra? I put one in my basket (online) before i left to the store to see if they had any in stock. They sold out at all the local stores, most in less than 30min. Came to thinking I had one on the computer, had the whole thing set up for a 1 click buy. CLICK, Said the item is no longer available. ARGG:|

Not sure about that Maxtor. I noticed the rebate form while I was there, but didn't see if it was a 5400, or a 7200 RPM one. If it's a 7200, and you don't mind waiting for the rebate. It's a really good deal IMO, but if it's 5400. I wouldn't be as excited myself, even though those bigger drives are supposed to be just as fast even though the spindle speed is slower.

yeah, it is a 5400... i was actually looking for something around 25-30 gigs (my old hd is only 13.6) for around $60, so i figured $99 for 40 gigs was a good deal. i don't really know though, that's why i was asking.

Ok, so I flaked the last few days and didn't go and pick one or two up early, figuring that I could just wake up early today and walk right in and get them. Well, I did wake up early and was the first one there (9:15). So far, so good. 9:55, 28 people with their faces pressed against the windows of CompUSA. No worries, though, I was in the front of the crowd and they couldn't ALL be there for the iomega zipcd. 10:00 sharp, doors open, stampede pursues. All it took was a wrong turn on my part and by the time I realised I was heading the wrong way, they were gone. Got to the cdrw and all I saw were a handful of disappointed people. I was in shock, oh and upset. I just stood there hoping that there would be a one per customer limit and that someone would return one back to the shelves. I was told that they got 50 of them in yesterday, and by closing time yesterday night they had been raided by e*ayer's and when the dust cleared, there were only 5 or 6 left for this morning! and they wouldn't be getting any more in tomorrow or do rain checks. Well, I just stood there staring at the empty shelves for about half and hour or so, having to tell about 20 or so people that they were sold out to save them the trouble of rummaging through the scraps (the 8x4x drives). After a few more minutes and several more disappointed bargain hunters, one of the employees whispers to me and told me to follow him when the 2 disbelievers insisted on rifling through the shelves in search of the 12x drive, after being told by me and several employers that they were out. It took awhile but the 2 people finally left and I proceeded to follow the employee to the back where wedged under several boxes of video cards was the prized jewel, the iomega 12x10x32 zipcd/rw drive! The employee had a heart and felt bad for me, knowing that I was waiting outside for awhile and being stiffed out of a drive. I was stoked, very cool guy, made my day. He asked me to return the favor by letting him install it for $30, but I politely declined, and told him that I could manage.

So just to clear things up, not ALL customer service reps are a-holes.

Thanks anandtechers for the heads up on this deal!

Please Help
My Iomega drive is firmware version 1.06, and I cant get it to go to version 1.07. I disabled DMA, then ran the program, and it never did anything. I am running Win Me if it makes a difference, so would somone please walk me through how to update my drive, or does someone know how to make it work? I would like some of the benefits of 1.07, and need some help.

Anyone know why I do not have the DMA checkbox when I go view Properties for either the Iomega (slave) or my Memorex 48X CD drive (master).

I cannot find DMA settings *anywhere*

any ideas?

I think this is the reason I cannot flash this Iomega up to 1.07

I got mine at 10:30am in compusa B&M, Princeton, NJ.
Then I drove to another compusa in Edison.
There was no drive left.

Wow, what a way to end the year. Lined up early morning at CompUSA (Downers Grove, IL) and managed to get 2 of these. People where at first confused with the other stack of 12x4x32 Iomegas. Saw the 12x10x32 stack of about 25 drives w/c was emptied in about 30 seconds. They even had a sales associate check top stock but all that remained were 12X4X32 Iomegas. Also found some $30 rebate coupons dated for purchases Dec 30,2000 to March 31, 2001. Drives were manufactured Sept 2000, TLA#0203. Upgraded the firmware from 1.03 to 1.07 (Win2000) w/no problem at all. Extracted a 55 mB music file to wav in about 15 seconds (programs showed 26X). Now I'm really running out of room, had to remove my old 6X DVD-IDE Player to use this thing. This for me is the deal of the year. Thanks!!!!!

BestBuy in my area HAD the drives and would NOT Pricematch.

First told me "CompUSA is an internet company and could NOT match price" it was ALL down hill from there.

I'm so mad I'm thinking about sueing BESTBUY... got the manager to state her points of WHY on a sheet of paper and then she and everyone else wouldn't talk to me after she had the casher give me the paper... She didn't even put her name on the paper, I ask if she could come back and place her name on the paper and the casher said "HERE this is here name now get out of here" he walked away before I could even get his name. This was the worst time I have EVER had in ANY store.

I'm Pissed!!!

I ordered one online last night but wasn't sure if it will go through. I went to the Monrovia, CA CompUSA to check it out. They had none. So I heard Best Buy had these for $129 also so I went there. And sure enough I saw the price tag for the 12x10x32x Iomega for $129 but they were out. I talked to the CSR and he said he can't give rainchecks but he had one that was an open box. I looked at the contents and it seems like the drive was never opened at all! And he gave me an extra $20 off. So I got the last drive at the West Covina, CA Best Buy for $129-$20-$30MIR=$79!! Damn, this must be the deal of the year. I'm just puzzled why such an awesome burner is being sold so cheap. According to all the reviews I read, this is a great drive. Well, what do I care, I'm just very happy that I got such a terrific deal!

RaysMD,
What do you mean like the old days with the HP? I have an HP 40x cd-rom manufactured by Plextor, I would like it to have Plextor's ID if possible it would be a lot more compatible then. Please let me know if you can do this.
Thanks
