The program is up on my "web site", feel free to post it on yours too mrVW ... There are 3 programs, just read the readme.txt to find out what to do.

Yes, you can name it back. All that is covered on the web page and in the README.

Also -- found out some more info recently. Someone in Atlanta emailed me and said that they got one with 1.06 firmware and on the box it sayd "32x DAE" -- Plextor never put 1.06 on their web site (1.05 then 1.07)... but lookslike 1.06 had the DAE enhancements in it!

Thanks to mrVW and LiQiCE for their efforts in making this an even better deal!

Now, if we can just get someone to make new faceplates with the Plextor logo, we can all pretend we really didn't buy Iomega drives.

Well I don't know if anyone mentioned this (I?m not going to read this whole thread to find out) But online orders are backordered (as you all know) and they are expected to be in stock in 3-4 weeks, all orders will be fulfilled, and if the rebate terms have expired (Iomega says must be postmarked by Jan 31 (if you bought on Sunday)) the CSR said that CompUSA would do whatever it took to make things right, as in they would give us an extra $30 off to make up for the lost Iomega rebate.
Did that make sense?

And great work LiQiCE and mrVW, I hope to be able to utilize your hard work soon :D

BTW won't at least the writing come of with rubbing alcohol or anything like that?

Sweet! I'm glad everyone's effort paid off and we got software to recognize the Iomega as a Plextor. Thanks to everyone! (including my humble self :). Now if only my drive weren't still back ordered...

You guys are great. Thanks for all the work. Now I just wish I would have gotten up and driven out of town to a store to buy one instead of ordering online. :( Is it really confirmed that CompUSA will fill all online orders? I sure hope so. Anyone have a spare they would sell now?

Thanks again guys.

Here's two questions:

Since i have no games that contain the protection SafeDisk2 -
Will the drive with the updated Plextor name read and copy SD2 protected disks?

Did the drive straight from the box and before the name change read and copy SD2 disks?

If you have had success, please state your firmware.

Thank you

EDIT: Ignore this post, basically just needed to reboot after running the renaming program.

I seem to be having problems with the rename. Here is the output that I get:

C:\Downloads\io2px12>io2px12
IOMEGA-->PLEXTOR v1.00

0,3 TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5701TA
1,0 IOMEGA ZIPCD3840INT-A
Found IOMEGA ID string at ID 0:0:0...changing to PLEXTOR.

But when I check the DeviceManager, it still says IOMEGA, in fact if I re-run the prgram it gives the same output again. Any guesses?

I'm running Win98 FE, everything but the IOMEGA is on SCSI.

This has got to be the largest number of people chaning ID strings to get the Plextor name.

I remember the Imation and HP drives, but without a doubt this is the largest group.

Plextor sure has made a name for themselves.

Wanna know what I really think? Anyway here it is: ALL of these drives were probably made by Sanyo (the burnproof people). Next, Plextor buys the drive and make their own firmware. Thereby giving the drive the excellent reputation of quality DAE, etc. IOMEGA and TDK decide to put their own badge on these bad boys. So, the readers over at Anandtech decide to change the ID string of the drives and now every drive is utilizing Plextor's firmware that they spent so much R&D on.

hehe :), next the TDK people are going to ask us for their own version of the ID changer. Anyone want to make some odds on that happening?

Robotic,
The hardware list at clone clinic lists the plextor px-w1210a... The Iomega drive this thread is devoted too is a rebadged px-w1210a. Below this they also list the VELO 12x10x32 drive, which is ALSO a plextor px-w1210a drive...

So i guess it does do safe disk copies...

Doubt i'll ever use it, but thought i'd check...

Thanks for the work guys. Will we be able the keep the warranty from iomega if we downgrade the firmware and rename the drive back to iomega? Or is there a point of no return? Also, I replaced my plextor 8x4x32x with this one and it seems a lot louder when reading cdrs and makes a tiny beep towards the end of burning. Is the noise and beep normal? My older plextor was never this loud, tho I love the speed and burn proof capabilities! :)
