running the utility from diehlr's post, this is what it identifies my Iomgea as after using LiQice flash utility:

Performing Device Inquiry on device @ HA ID:0 SCSI ID:1
Vendor ID: PLEXTOR
Product ID: CD-R PX-W1210A
Version Info: 1.07
(Device is a CD-ROM device)
Need someone with an Iomega and a Plextor to run this on theres if they could.

Yes yes, I just found out that the drives are really NOT the same. Iomega worked out a deal with Micron Simiconductor to have specially produced 0.8MB RAM chips so they could deliver a 1.8MB buffer version of the drive over Plextor's 2mB version! This saves $8.00E -52 cents per drive!

Or, the drives really are the same but the specs on one could be talking about raw buffer size and another talking about usable buffer size, but that would be too technical ;)

P.S. I tried the name changer on Win2K -- as suspected, no workie. I'll boot up Win98 in a few minutes.

I would like to know the same thing. Nero and another cd id program I have identified the drive having 2 meg cache.

Could there be more than one version?

LiQiCe,

NOTE: The ID string that you're writing to the Iomega is missing 2 spaces between "-R" and "PX" There are a total of 3 spaces.

It's supposed to be "PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W1210A" Just take a look at my original program again and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'll leave the 3rd revision up to you.

I see the changes that you made to my modified program. I actually didn't want to mess with the "CD-ROM" because that was from the original program. May this program will actually work.

hehe :)

yep,

Just take a look at my modified version of the program and change IOMEGA to PLEXTOR.

Hey did anyone else try my version of the program besides mrVW? It should work just fine.

So has someone created a program that will change the ID string so that you can use plextor firmware updates without a hack?

I got the 1.8 MB cache size from the spec sheet I downloaded from Iomega's site. It's in PDF format. At the back there is a list of specs and it says the cache size for this drive is 1.8 MB. I know that Nero says 2048 bytes.

I can't really explain the discrepancy. Anyways, that's where I got the 1.8 Mb from...

RAY -- your program almost worked. Name changed, but the original Plextor firmware program fails to find the drive -- so I suspect the name being sent down isnt' exactly right. Did you test it yourself?

Who is the author of the original program... I want to put it up on the web site, but want permission.

Thanks!

This is the website with the FAQ for the Imation 8/20 -> Plextor 8/20 program.

http://www.knowplace.org/imr_faq.html

mrVW,
Ahh, so my program did work. Just the name isn't correct?

I haven't tried it on my Iomega yet. I'm heading down to school to get my computer, right now. I'll be checking this out in more detail after I get back in ~1 hour.

I must have screwed up the strings, because I did it in kindof a rush. I will edit the strings and fix whatever mistakes I made and post a new version in a few minutes. I'll update this post when it is posted.

PS- Is anyone selling an extra Iomega drive? :) Mine is still backordered from CompUSA's web site, and since we can change the ID string I'd love to get one now :-( ... Email me at rchung@monroe.k12.nj.us if you'd be willing to sell me one, I'd pay a small premium for the trouble of course.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I'm working with a few people who have the drives so we can test it out. If this works, I will post a version which will work for people who used the last one (and thus messed up their burners), and one that works 100%. Sorry for the last version, this is all trial and error since I dont have the drive (I might if someone is nice) *grin* ... Anyways, be forewarned, anyone using the fixed version, this program will scan for ANY Plextor drive and change ANY drive ID to a Plextor 12/10/32A, thats the way this program works. So if you have any other Plextor drives connected, do not run this utility! Once again, I'll post an update as soon as I know it works.

UPDATE!: Here is the link to the program, I included 3 version. 1 to convert the Iomega to a Plextor 12/10/32A, 1 to convert a Plextor to an Iomega 12/10/32A, and one to convert a Plextor to a Plextor 12/10/32A (for those people that screwed up their original drives). This was tested by a fellow AnandTech Hot Dealer, and verified that it works with Nero as a Plextor, and the firmware updates work. I have no tested converting back to an Iomega, so someone else will have to do that although it should work perfectly. DO NOT run this program with anything except the Iomega drive attached and maybe a Hard drive to boot from. It will change anything on the SCSI or IDE bus, so nothing is safe!!! I can't help anyone that has changed all their CD ROMS into Plextor 12/10/32A's :) ... Good luck, here is the link:

Again, if anyone wants to be nice and sell me a drive, let me know :) (rchung@monroe.k12.nj.us

DO NOT run the update program until I confirm. My drive won't work in programs right now and there is no point in anyone else taking the risk!

RaysMD - The reason yours didn't work is because the program looks for "IMATION" which you changed to "IOMEGA", but this program uses PASCAL styled strings, and right before the "IOMEGA" it has the string length as an ASCII character (value 07), which you need to change to 06 or the program will look for "IOMEGA " ... Which isn't right :) ... I'm really surprised this works, I didn't expect it to. Like mrVW said, don't download my old version, I'm actually going to remove it from my web site, and I'll post a new one when I can verify that it works.

Thanks to LiQice for the help!!! I was able to update it to the proper ID String and now it will update using the Plextor firmware from their website... NERO now identifies it as a Plextor 1210a, and sucessfully burned a file. Thanks to LiQICE for the help!

I hope someone out there can help set him up with a drive at a good price, as he is currently without one. Anyone? He should have the updated file available as I post this.
