I'm thinking in investing in AMD short-term. (Probably less than a year) does anyone else think this is a good idea? I have a feeling that BD is going to be AMD's return to fame and that would probably make AMD's stock skyrocket. (Not that I know anything about the stock market)

BD performance so far is nothing but speculation since there hasn't been any credible reviews.
If the top BD chip cannot beat the top SB chip performance, you'd be burned.
Even just "matching" or being equal could leave you burned.

i would. i'm no amd fanboy by any means, but their newer technologies are very promising and have me excited. i could see them gaining quite a bit this year.

Unless it's so groundbreaking that you think everyone and their mother will suddenly dump their current computers, and buy AMD, then probably no.

Having said that, AMD does look like good value right now and has upward potential. It's not an Apple though.

I'm not saying that suddenly, overnight everyone will switch to AMD but if BD is a good architecture at a competitive price point then AMD will undoubtedly gain more market share. And don't forget about ATI. They've been doing exceptionally well competing with nVidia.

Joseph, I definitely see them going up. Not skyrocketing, but up. I think the path they're on is the correct one and follows where I see the trend of personal computing going.

Take a close look at how many top executives have left in the past few months...Is it a cleaning of "dead wood," or are the rats leaving the sinking ship?

Don't do it unless youre looking to get in for a short-term gain. I lost money investing in AMD prior to the Athlon chip coming out. Even though the Athlon was great tech at the time there's more to investing than a company simply having great tech. There might be some short-term gains but if you're looking for anything long term, look elsewhere.

I still kick myself for not investing in Apple in the late 90s when they sank to sub-$20. Now that was a buy if there ever was one.

Well I have invested in AMD and INTC equally, so far I may have to pull out of my Sprint (S) stock, its not going anywhere, not sure if big red will buy them out.

AMD has really been struggling over the past couple years. I bought their stock at $12 cuz I thought it was a bargain and have watched it go all the way down to $5 a share. They've gone through several CEO's in a short span of time as well. Any recovery they have will not be within a year unless they blow the doors off of Intel like they did when they beat them to the 1ghz mark for cpu's 10 years ago. I don't see their new tech doing that though.

Intel has owned them in the litho department for quite a while now. AMD has a lot of catching up to do.

IMHO you could probably do better for short term investing than AMD. However, given its low cost, and that it's unlikely to go down much (it simply can't, ha), it could be a good bet. It'd be a low risk buy at this point.

Their ATI division may be beating nVidia in performance, but are they making money?
A few years ago, their ATI division was seriously losing money and in the red even though they had both the performance and performance/value crown. How are they doing now?

If you do, pray bulldozer will be the revolution they think it might be.

I doubt AMD will go under, a certain oil baron as too much invested in them.

"Good value" compared to what?
Or are you assuming that because their stock is <$10, that it's automatically cheap?

How much is AMD worth in your opinion?

ditching their CEO was a big WTF moment. i'd wait until their senior executive positions all become stable for a while.

During the MHz wars?

I made a lot of money on AMD then (and nVidia too) but I dipped into the well too many times and am stuck with a lot of $15 AMD stock :(

I'd say that neither one has really dominated the other.

But if you want to invest based off of feeling without any real fundamentals to back it up, it's almost like gambling at a casino. Hell, even researching and doing your DD is usually a gamble too.

Having said that, I think AMD is poised for a small to medium run up in the next few weeks to a month. Just a very uneducated guess based off a quick glance at their sharpchart.

I might invest in them long term but shot term I think is a bad idea. Bull dozer looks set to fail IMO. It's behind schedule and up against processors it was never meant to face. If it came out a year or two ago it might have had a chance but I don't see it doing much but competing in the low end. Going forward though there are some exciting things that might come from them.
