Opeth. "But they're death metal!!!!" you may say. Au Contraire my friend. They are progressive metal, and even if you hate heavy metal, they have some very mellow, quiet songs. Check out Harvest, Windowpane, Hours of Wealth, Atonement, Isolation Years, Death Whispered a Lullaby, and then if you like those, The Drapery Falls and Reverie/Harlequin Forest to get a taste of their heavier side that's still quite mellow. Then if you still want to go on, listen to Deliverence and Master's Apprentices 😀

Seconded. Start with the Damnation album, all mellow tracks, and if you are feeling adventurous try some of their other albums. Opeth

Also check out Porcupine Tree, another great prog rock band. It's worth noting that Steven Wilson (of PT) performed on and produced Opeth's Damnation album.

FYI, the Trio Bulgarka provided backing vocals for Kate Bush on a couple of tracks of The Sensual World. One of my 10 favorite Kate songs is "Rocket's Tail" with them and David Gilmour.

For smooth jazz, I like Paul Hardcastle and his Jazzmasters series. Some really excellent music there. I also like Marc Antoine and Peter White, both guitar players.

What he said. Also, try To Rid the Disease, it's a personal fav.

Another edit: Here's a rendition of the song they did on swedish TV, the keys/guitar sound better on the recording though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHUfpwNsrxA

And if you want something REALLY awesome to listen to, go get a copy of Sol Niger Within, by Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects. Side project of the guitarist for Meshuggah. Featuring the best drummer alive.

you'd have to be dead and buried to not rock out to "Detroit Breakdown" 😛 soul is their teacher, punk it their preacher, and it's pretty rare to find women with powerhouse vocals fronting a rock band.
