What kind of coffee maker? And by cafeteria do you mean an unattended lunch room or real staffed cafeteria?

Need more information, damn it :)

my answer:

I do not think this situation would ever happen here.

I am positive that in a company as prestigious and self sufficient as i have seen your's to be, I am certain that the appliances generously provided for employee use by company are well maintained as indicated in the user's manual.

I am confident the people that have been employed by you and the rest of management are responsible and smart enough to use the coffee maker as directed by the manufacturer thereby the theorectical situation you have described will never ever come to be.

Am i correct in my assumption Mr. Citrix?

The answer he's looking for is turn it off and clean it up. Last time, most people said they'd call maintenance, and a lot of people here agreed with them and disagreed with Citrix, because they felt their time was too valuable to be spent cleaning up coffee. The thing is, most of them were posting in the thread FROM work, pretty much destroying their point.
What about people who don't post or surf on the web... would it be justified if they just walked away from the mess ? I fail to see how this would be a good interview question for real live candidates.

And if the scenario does happen you'll know who to start interrogating first.

1) Pour cup of coffee
2) Add flavored creamer because black coffee tastes horrible
3) Put cup in microwave
4) Clean up mess
5) Microwave coffee if necessary
6) Drink coffee
7) Resume work

Order a minion to prevent the scalding coffee from hitting the floor with their bare hands or die in a pool of piranha.

Oh wait...wasn't this the interview for the mad scientist position?

I can't believe anyone would hire you if you answered interview questions like that. Seriously, do you talk like that in real life, or is that just your writing style?

The point is, if you just leave it the situation will just get worse. I'm guessing he's looking for people who will "think outside the box" and not do what their training tells them to do (call maintenance), but rather do what is necessary to prevent the problem from getting worse.

Do you mean if I were an employee of the company or if I was there for the interview, and went into the kitchen for a drink while waiting for you and this happened?

If I was an employee, I'd clean it, no problem. I'm not sure what I'd do if I was just there for the interview.

I would stop it, clean it up, and send out a CC to everyone to let them know it was broken, as well as maintenence. Not that hard ;)

I love reading ATOT threads just to laugh at all the replies... :D (then I hope they weren't meant to be serious!)

Citrix - would you actually ask this question in a real life interview? If so, WOW ... you must interview a lot of stupid people? No offense to anybody. I can't imagine that people could efficiently execute any relatively important job responsibilities if they can't handle a coffee machine? I know that many places, nobody bothers refilling the coffee - that's one thing. But wherever I work I make a point of ensuring firstly that I do my job as well as I can, or at the very minimum, better than what I see being done by other employees. Secondly, I usually do things to try and get noticed to move up in the company. That means "thinking outside the box" as previously mentioned.

I hate staying in the same position for extended periods of time ... gotta move up.

Yes i have asked it and will ask it today, tomorrow and Thursday. The responses have been quite interesting. its a simple question and i tell them that. not tricks. but when i ask it, their face turns white, eyes glass over. it looks like i just them a math formula made by steven hawking and just told them to solve it...

The people we interview arent stupid. they just dont think...

What's worse than a repost?
A self-repost.

The "correct" answer for Citrix is that you stop and go clean up the coffee spill. Because you are a team player and are always willing to take action and lend a helping hand, and all that bull$hit. In reality, all that answer means is you are smart enough to know the expected answer and give it to him. It's a stupid fvcking question, but we already had this debate when Citrix posted the EXACT SAME FVCKING POST a few months ago.

So now cleaning up spilled coffee is "thinking outside the box"?
Ummm, yeah, ok.

I know, common sense is that you just clean it. Why is that so hard?

If i were asked this question, i would have 2nd thoughts if i was offered a job through that company......
