Internet under the control of the U.N?!

I'm for the idea of giving more people access to the internet but not at the expense of free speech and personal freedoms on the net. I don't need any government to be my conscience. Luckily, nothing will be decided for a long time on this.

It ain't the government, the US government is against this idea. It's the freaking United Nations. They should just close down already.

has worked great so far, see no reason to change anything, except maybe add the .xxx

and ThePresence it isnt the UN its Syria, Egypt, Vietnam and South Africa bringing a proposal to the world body

Yes, and their proposal is that it should be under the control of the UN.

Bad bad bad idea. The internet should not be controlled by any government/orginization/company/ruling body/whatever. It's fine the way it is.

They can't even manage security around a mudhole in Bagdad. What are they going to do that Redmond cant???

This isnt Deus Ex people!??!

I said, ANY GOVERNMENT, I didn't mention the U.S.
The UN can never agreed on wording on minutes of a meeting, good luck to them on this one.

Yes, and their proposal is that it should be under the control of the UN.
and I highly doubt it will be approved and sure hope it wont so it will never be a part of the UN

The effort for global control of the Internet is reportedly led by China, which allows its own citizens online access, but it is tightly controlled by a giant firewall and monitored by government surveillance.

China has so far been joined in its efforts by representatives of Syria, Egypt, Vietnam and South Africa.

Oh yeah, that's exactly the group of countries I want having a say in what I do online.

Indeed. The US is still the primary controller of the internet (with the EU gaining more and more parity), and clearly both parties are doing a fine job. I see the internet as similar to freedom of the seas. Britain did a fine job of ensuring it throughout the nineteenth century and noone complained. We raised a ruckus in WWI when they abused it, but after the war, things returned to normal. After WWII, the British simply could not afford the job any more and the task passed to us. Similarly, until there is some pressing reason for the US to pass the torch to another body I see no reason to change it. Especially a body that would surely restrict the internet as to avoid offending certain regimes.

The internet is the best tool that the Free West (and East) has to subvert totalitarian regimes across the globe. No nation can afford the loss of effieicency related to disconnecting from the internet, so the best they can do is put up feeble blocks like the 'great firewall.' Ultimately, the internet will do more to expand democracy than any military force could hope to achieve. It is the best tool we have to win the hearts and minds of the third world.
