Internet through your electrical socket?

The city of Manassas, Va., went a different route to provide its citizens with high-speed Internet. The city has started offering broadband over power lines, or BPL. The service is piped right through electrical wall sockets.

Yeah great ****** idea.

$10 says this idea lasts about as long as the first person to get electrocuted 😉

Internet over power lines isn't a new idea.

But yeah it might not be the best idea, but the infrastructure is already there to connect all houses.

Yeah this idea has been around for a while. Its just starting to take off though. I've actually researched it myself for my company. Only thing is that we're deregulated, and the last thing the PSC wants is us getting into the ISP business.

Why is it such a bad idea? The wires are already there...and saying someone is going to get electrocuted is like saying TVs are a bad idea because you could get electrocuted plugging the thing in.

with OC-255 they are acheiving speed of 13.21Gbps or something exactly like that

It could very well be a fine and very practical idea for internet.

I am certain, however, that it is excellent material for humor. I think you may have missed that part 😉

I read some articles on this a couple years ago and they had problems with line noise. Must have solved it.

And his post went right over your head...

Thing that gets me is the propogation of the signal. Sniffers the world over delight at being able to read their whole citys email.

I was just reading an article here which sounds interesting. They are going to hook up millions of their customers to it. I wonder if the interference problems have been solved by now. I researched on google some of the places that refer to this and couldn't find anything substancial other than the Ham operators in general are up at arms about this.

Anybody have any news? Also, Doodoo wrote:

The current thinking is not for the Power companies to get into the ISP business but ISP's to use Power companies' existing lines and the ISP's provide the service.

Why did you revive this thread?

THREAD ZOMBIE!!!!

I was reading the article and it was very interesting as I am getting quite fed up with Comcast's craptastic service. I did what I was supposed to do, looked to see if someone had already asked the question and I found this, not so old, thread.

i guess you're suggesting we get rid of all electrical appliances as well

Shockingly faster than DSL is it? 😉

Beats access via the sanitary (drain/sewage) lines. Talk about the connection going to the crapper - literally!
