Internet Connection Speeds...

I live in the UK and Im completely shocked at how fast you guys and gals connection speeds are!! Just reading the Top Gear Thread a little while ago I couldnt believe that a gent was downloading at 1700kb/sec!! I mean how in the heck do you get that fast!!!

Whats the fastest connection there over in the States? At the moment I have to suffer with a 256k up and a 512k download... Not pretty!! I also have a FTP server my self so upload is well, important!!

I'm not meaning to be rude by asking but how much do you guys or gals pay? Im paying £23 (just under) a month for a static IP address, no port blocking or limit on downloads.

Some of the companies over here make our lives hell when it comes to Broadband as BT is doing their part but I feel maybe not fast enough! We have some good deals considering, but our Upload speeds just suck at 256K. I think theres something called LLU which is 400K up, but thats only in certain areas... bit of a shame really. 🙁 thanks for the replies tho 🙂

About 50$US/mo here.

i get 398 KB down and 30K up (honest speeds not what comcast tells me)

yeah 256 up my a$$. 400 KB down is hot though

10MBps down / 1MBps up (this part is great)

<-- can't wait for Verizon FIOS ... 15MBps/2MBps for $50/mo. (company pays for up to that much per month anyway)

Hey Phil, I'm in the UK too 😉

LLU is Local Loop Unbundling, it refers to the process of allowing companies to control the Local Loops (i.e. "loops" of phone lines past the exchange"), but it doesn't guarantee better upload rates. However, because BT aren't in control of those loops anymore, the companies that provide service on them are able to offer a broadband service with better upload rates.

Heck, you could enquire about S-DSL (or just SDSL), which gives you anything from 512k down to 2mbps down, as well as the same in upload speed, i.e. synchronous DSL.

I'm on a 512k/256k connection too, but 1mbps beckons 🙂

I forgot to mention, plus.net is doing 2mbps for £40/month...

Just got Adelphia's 4Mb/512Kb yesterday. According to various tests, it seems as if most of the time I'm getting right at 4Mbps on great servers, and I'm well over my upload at around 600Kbps. I'm happy with it so far. It's a nice jump over Bellsouth DSL, which I just go rid of. Had their 3Mb/384Kb service, and was only realistically pulling down 2.2Mbps.

I cant get SDSL down in devon 🙁 Along with a lot of other things as well!! Besides, have you seen the price of the connections!!! Chrikey!! I would not like to pay for that!!

Is there any plans to be having better upload speeds at all? 400k isnt all that great, but it is better than 256k...

If the price for 2mb comes to about £30 a month, I might consider it... for a second anyways 😉 where abouts you living?

I second that!!

i live in the uk also and we have NTL's 750K down possibly 300K up (probably 150K up tho) currently NTL max out at 1.5M i think, but next year or at least some time soon ntl will offer 3 new speeds, lowest to highest will be 1Meg the 2 Meg then 3meg connections all for the same price as what we pay now for 300k, 750k and 1.5M

so ill be on 2mb when this goes thru

BUT DAMN THE REST OF U !!!

Dont NTL cap the downloading you can do? I know I cant get it down this way. My friend up near Cardiff Uni has the 750k service which has a 128k upload.. I think hes fairly happy with it..

Yup. They're targeted at businesses who need to run websites as well as have good download speeds. I'd be happier with lower upload rates, myself.

Hopefully. I think BT is the main chokepoint with regards to that question though.

I'm in Eastbourne (South-East coast), and we're lucky to be near an exchange that supports 2mbps ADSL, but it's still a bit pricey for me.

[Edit]ed for retarded use of the quote tag.

Eight bits in a byte, so divide by eight:

3.0mbps = ~375kb per second.
A nice connection 😉
