Yes - I do run an ftp site off it. My max download is around 180k/s

What is nice is that I have been able to upload at a constant 150k/s

Now that is a nice speed to have.. I can but wish! Maybe 10 years down the line we might get something over in the UK like it! I take it that the upload speed could maybe max out a 2mb connection or not quite?

What can I say? the entire backbone of the internet is located in America. anyone outside America has a lot of catching up to do...

I think that was what he was meaning.. It was in the top gear thread...

Ever heard of Sweden?

Am I missing something here?

Yeah, Sweden has 10mbit/sec down and up connections, with 100mbit/sec connections available in people's homes.

I was pointing out to Trente that, contrary to his obvious beliefs, not everything outside of the almighty USA is backwards

I know about broadband speeds in sweden, but you can not deny the simple fact that the internet grew out of America and thus the nerve centre of the world-wide-web is located there. people all over the world are routed to websites across the globe via America and go through "american checkpoints" on their way.

Also, if i'm not mistaken, most of the 'content' of the internet rests on American soil, so you mostly download more MB from America than any other place in the world (unless you restrict yourself to native sites). Hence: Americans enjoy the best all-around connections and ping statistics than anyone else!

InsightBB cable.

DSL Reports speeds:

3718kb down 351kb up

Words cant express what Im thinking right about now...

Does it ever max out for downloading? Is it a very expensive connection?

Heres my test... (I used Mega Path if that makes any difference...) slower than normal..

It's about $45 a month. Yes, it does max out, but not all the time. My connection is often faster than sites I visit, and my speeds are limited by them.

Well it would be great to have those kinds of speeds but like i said in a previous post, I dont think that the UK will get there anytime too..

Hey, I was stuck on dial up until just a couple years ago. Small town USA didn;t get broadband for a LONG time.

Never say never.

The three initial offerings for Verizon FIOS are:

5 Mbps / 2 Mbps -- $34.95

15 Mbps / 2 Mbps -- $44.95

30 Mbps / 5 Mbps -- not yet announced

Eventually, connections up to 100 Mbps will be available over fiber.

there is no nerve centre on the internet. That's just the point of the internet. It's a decentralized network that was supposed to survive a nuclear war.

You better do a 101 on IP and routing

and what the hell are the "check points" you are talking about, do you mean routers???

right now I'm on a 1mbit/128kbit connection for $30/month but I'm calling up my ISP today to see if I can get bumped up to 3mbit/256kbit 🙂

Fixed.

My point is - as your sig also suggests - that the internet was American at first, and later on became world wide. as much as you'd want the internet to become a decentralized network, it's not gonna happen. the foundations & roots are American and shall always remain American, unless a new network is established with the intention and idea of making it decentralized from the start. the fact that the internet was born American is inevitable, unfortunately. I also would like to note that I, myself, am not an American, so I have no interest or favour in the issue
