Internet Connection Keeps Dropping

Hey everyone. I have a road runner cable connection, and it seems that every 20-30 minutes or so, my connection drops, for at least 10-15 seconds. Also, loading web pages has become really slow, as it seems my computer is searching for the connection because it's not constant anymore. Now, I know I can call them up, but is there anything I can do? I have a router as well. Is there anyway to test if it's the router instead of the cable modem besides directly hooking up my cable modem to my comp for a day and seeing how it is? Anything I can do through the comp? I have already unplugged the cable modem/router for over an hour, with no success. Thanks.

-Phil

Edit: It's not the router and it's getting much worse. I don't think it's the NIC card in my comp because the other computer in the network is having trouble too. RR won't send a guy for a frickin week and I can barely be online. Help me.

Thanks/

-Phil

1. Make sure you network card in your system isn't dropping on you.... enable the little connection monitor or whatever it's called to show in your tray, and watch it during these periods.... I've had two machine drop at the NIC before.

2. Does router have latest firmware?

3. DO hook system directly to cable modem.

4. Call them.... You may have over or under signal from your ISP. They can possibly make adjustments that will clear the issue up.

Well, you will need to hook up your PC directly to the cable modem if you want to make sure its not the router. This is probably the first thing you need to do and you don't need to run it all day. You can run it for an hour or so to gauge if its stable.

Somebody has already suggested to get the latest firmware for the router so thats another thing. BTW, what brand router is it?

Another thing to check is if your cable line has has a splitter that routs the regular cable signal to different rooms of your house. If you have too many, this can degrade the signal. You have the cable company run a dedicated cable to the modem or you can disconnect the splitter and have the cable modem has exclusive access to the line. Another thing you can do is buy a bi-directional signal amp ( I think Circuit City sells a Motorola brand one for around $70; Radioshack has a cheaper one for around $30) so you can improve signal strength.

Does the router have a setting for Roadrunner? You might need to clone a MAC address from one of your NIC's in the router's configuration menu.

I've been using it for six months - no problems. Then all of a sudden.

Have you done a hard reset of the router at all?

1. Write down/copy any settings specific to your ISP that the router "might" have in it to connect to the ISP. Mine doesn't have any on road runner except for a cloned MAC address - But your RR local service might be different.

2. do a hard reset of the router

3. Download the latest Firmware for your Router and flash it over to the Router. --Might as well while your at it.

4. Do a hard reset of the router again. -just for kicks.... You ought to see me when I lock doors.. 🙂

Now see how everything works........ That's assuming that you've tried your machine with a direct connect to the cable modem with the router out fo the picture so to speak.

Alright guys. It's not the router. The cable company is sending someone in a week, but I wan to see if I can fix it. Any ideas?

Routers suck, I had the same problem with my POS Linksys... I took it back and haven't used a router since... I have seen this with more than just 1 brand.. bad luck for me I guess!
