Interesting, the ps3 is actually cheaper than the 360 when you add up the numbers

MS has repeatedly stated that they will not be making any games that make use of the HD-DVD player. Movies only.

They couldn't if they wanted to because the read speed on the HD-DVD player isn't fast enough for games.
that is a bummer :(

but, without a doubt we will ahve hd-dvd x4 and x8 and so on given time, but with it being slow at the start I'm starting to doubt we will see hd-dvd games on this version of the xbox

It leaves a convenient upgrade for MS to take. Wait and see which side wins out in the format war and see if it is even readily accepted over the next 3 years.

Why is it a bummer? HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are just storage formats. If the space isn't needed, and thus far it hasn't been, then what's the problem? I can see where down the line you might see a game or two on multiple discs, but it won't be many (e.g. for reference see the Gamecube library). Trust me, if Sony starts putting games on Blu-Rayit will be because they used a bunch of HD FMV... no thanks, I have always preferred using the in-game engine for cut scenes. FMV always look out of place and takes away from the continuity of a game.

This is how numbers can be played and why comparisons like this are useless. Want to play games in HD?

Xbox360 Premium + 3 HD Games = $580 + tax

PS3 Premium + Cables to play HD Games + 3 HD Games = ~$800 + tax (depends on how much you spend on cables)

This is quite simply the dumbest argument and comparison I've ever read.

Wow.

And explain to me how an Xbox Live gold subscription is $49.99 and "likely more" ? You pay for the year of unlimited online gaming, you get a year of unlimited online gaming. I don't see how it increases?

And PS3's network platform may be free, but the games themselves often charge to play.

Talk about one biased argument, especially for a system who's final specs and pricing points haven't even been released, only news of delays and hardware production problems.

Costco man, 48 AA batteries for ~$10.

NiMH batts and charger will outlast those easily. There's little reason not to invest in some unless you simply can't be near a reliable charger.

My 360 was $500, I had to have the wi-fi. My PS3 will be $600 but will have Blu-ray built in. This ignores online charges and cables (I needed the VGA for 360 and will need a HDMI for PS3). So in my mind the prices were always very close, the PS3 is a better deal IMO for the HD movies for only $100 more and an extra 40GB of HD.

And people forget one thing, the PS3 is not out yet.
Also, MS might lowered the price for the 360 once the PS3 comes out.
You're comparing an existing system to not-out-yet system.

Sigh... you don't see that you're doing the same thing I'm doing? Except I'm making sense, because 90% of the people in this country don't have an HDTV and don't have a need for HD-DVD.

It seems to me you're using every excuse just to avoid admitting that the PS3 is a better value for some people. If you want the extra features, the PS3 is cheaper. If you don't, the Xbox360 is cheaper. I fail to see how the argument is stupid.

I'll freely admit that the PS3 could be a better value for some people, but those people are in the minority. And that's why Kotaku's price comparison is stupid. If they prefaced it by saying it was a price comparison that was only relevant to a small portion of the population, then I'd agree with them.

Yeah I know, I mentioned that above.

First here's a run down of the Xbox 360:

Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (Likely more.)
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99
Two Play and Charge Kits: $19.99 times two.
HD-DVD: $199*
Total: $839.94

That, of course, didn't include the High Def TV or any games.

So here's the best I can figure for the Playstation 3:

Playstation 3 standard: $599
PS3 Network Platform: Free
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99*
USB charge cables: Free
Total: $648.99

still getting a wii but still :)

as others said what a bad comparison. the percent of people with HD TV's are low. the percent of people that use the PS3 to play movies are going ot low also.

i have no need of a HD DVD player, wireless (if it has a wired port im fine), or wireless controllers etc. i have a PS2 that i rarly play on line with.

yeah FMV is nice if used in moderation. butseems newer RPG (mainly FF series) are 60% fmv. i been trying to play FFX but man getting tired of all the FMV. FMV should be used to enhance the game and not be the game.

Nobody's mentioned so far that the Xbox live service is much better all-around than the Sony or Nintendo offerings. And for $50 for a year, it's cheaper than any other full online service models (MMORPGs for example). Sony and Nintendo don't even give you the option to pay for an upgrade their because the infrastructure is not in place. This puts the XBOX on a different level from the other systems, because online play is becoming a huge portion of the gaming market.

I don't mind a little FMV. But I honestly prefer the in-game engine to be used for cut scenes. IMO, it's kind of ridiculous to be playing a game then come to a cut scene where the characters and environment look absolutely nothing like the game you are playing.

Though I can see some games where it just doesn't work well. For example, Diablo II on PC. It would be somewhat underwhelming to try and tell the story using the same 3/4 view 2D characters that the game itself uses... and the DII cut scene between the Acts were great. But these days most games feature full 3D characters and worlds, so I'd just prefer the in game 3D engine be used for the sake of continuity.

What I hate most of all though is FMV that is just video of the in-game engine being used to create a cut scene  I have never understood that at all. Just seems like a waste of space and half the time the video actually looks worse than the game (i.e. grainy).

Yes, please please buy the PS3 so the prices of the xbox360 come down. Then I can afford to buy my first gaming system since my Atari 2600.

Thank you. It seems your beef is with the presentation of the article, not the "comparison".

Everybody blew off the comparison like Kotaku performed voodoo to come up with the numbers they did (they do seem "fudged" a little to prove their point). For the average Joe, the Xbox will be cheaper. There is really no arguing that. For some percentage of the market, however, whether it's 1% or 50%, the comparison is very relevant.

you forgot the HDMI cable that is REQUIRED for HD playback..
and you forgot that SOE already said they are modling the PS online after live includign the fee structure.
you are also forgetting that they have estimated that the PS3 games are gonna be pricier..

If you're looking for a all-in-one wonder, then hell yeah, the PS3 is the clear choice. If you're looking for games, we'll just have to wait won't we? The current titles available for the 360 in my opinion are so-so, with Geometry Wars being the only game that has truly been "awesome."

What happens if Blu-Ray fails, and you have to buy a 500$+ HD-DVD player on top of the PS3.

Not so good now!

And they will still probably be the same price as BluRay titles, which according to rumors is gonna be $80 at a minimum.

:D

Or they both could fail.

And players won't cost $500 forever. They'll be down to $100 by the time most of us commonfolk buy them.
