Interesting, the ps3 is actually cheaper than the 360 when you add up the numbers

First here's a run down of the Xbox 360:

Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (Likely more.)
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99
Two Play and Charge Kits: $19.99 times two.
HD-DVD: $199*
Total: $839.94

That, of course, didn't include the High Def TV or any games.

So here's the best I can figure for the Playstation 3:

Playstation 3 standard: $599
PS3 Network Platform: Free
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99*
USB charge cables: Free
Total: $648.99

still getting a wii but still :)

Yes, but the 360 is more customizable. Not everyone wants HD-DVD right away, not everyone wants wireless networking, or even two controllers and play and charge kits.

If you are wired, you do not necessarily need a Wireless adapter. Its Optional just as the HD DVD is for some people so slash 300 there and your are down to 539

Interesting way of looking at it.

But the 360 standard can be had for less than $300 so that's $100 off right off the bat.

Only really applies if you want that stuff. For example, my 360 is hardwired, so no need for a wireless adapter. Also, what sort of batteries do the PS3 controllers come with? Because the play and charge kits also include lithium ion batteries, they aren't just charge cables. As for the HD movie player stuff, I have no interest in using either system for HD movies. Standalone players are always better, so I'm just going to wait for the price to drop and buy a stand alone unit. Then you have the online stuff... if Sony's offering is as comprehensive as Live then I'll be impressed, but otherwise the $50 for 13 months is well worth the cost for Live.

Few people want or need the wireless networking adapter for the Xbox 360.

Few people want or need the play-n-charge cables for the Xbox 360. I bought 50 AA batteries for $14 the other day and just use those.

Not very many people actually want a HD-DVD or Bluray drive, but I'll take this as an equalizer to what you're forced to pay for with the PS3.

While Sony has said that their matchmaking service will be free, they have also left the door open for specific titles to charge extra for online multiplayer.

1. You're assuming people WANT the HD-DVD component. Most people don't have a TV that can take advantage of either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
2. I assume the play and charge kit just lets you charge the controller while you're playing vs when you're not playing. What's wrong with charging overnight?
3. What if I don't need a wireless network adapter? Does it not have an ethernet port?
4. I don't game online, but I guess the online thing probably applies to a good percentage of 360 owners.

In summary, Sony is just giving you a bunch of stuff that many people don't even need.

But for the folks that want those accessories, it seems the Sony is cheaper. You can't disregard the argument because it doesn't apply to you.

So I can't disregard the argument because it doesn't apply to me, but they can make the argument even though it doesn't apply to many/most customers? ;) It's a stupid argument.

For most people you can eliminate the HD-DVD player and the wireless adapter. Or at very least replace the wireless adapter with a third party product. And you could replace the $40 for two play and charge kits with some NiMH batteries - so under $10.

It's like saying a Lexus isn't really more expensive than a Honda if you add up all the extra stuff you get in a Lexus.

Why the hell do you need to buy TWO play and charge kits? You really don't even need to buy one I ended up with one only because it was part of the package at Sam's Club but it works fine for both of my controller because they never are low on juice at the same time. That's just needlessly adding on to the cost.

Also, not everybody needs the wireless adaptor.

This is the type of thing we've been seeing from the PS fanboys. Kotaku should be ashamed for that.

I can't confirm this but I heard that the PS3 controllers have the batteries built-in so if one ever dies, you have to replace the whole controller? Anyone else hear that?

People might not need hd or blueray, not now, but they will. Sometimes games will be released on the xbox in both dvd and hd-dvd format, they will want that. People will want a hd-dvd player for the same reason many people use the ps2 as their dvd player, its not the best, but its good enough.

Everything is becoming wireless, wirless home networks are becoming more and more popular, handhelds gaming systems, pda's, laptops, printers. And I dont think you see many homes having a network connection to their router in their living room.

With the transform to wireless, growing outside of the computer networking with even speakers becoming wirless I cant see people accepting wired controlers for much longer, expecialy with a brand new system.

The HD-DVD drive for the 360 will not be for games, only movies.

Its game developers, they see space and they find something to put on it

MS has repeatedly stated that they will not be making any games that make use of the HD-DVD player. Movies only.

They couldn't if they wanted to because the read speed on the HD-DVD player isn't fast enough for games.

Anybody looking to buy a console with the intent of playing HD movies would see that the PS3 is a better (or equivalent) buy than the Xbox360. That doesn't make it a stupid argument - only an irrelevant one to you.
It's like saying a Lexus isn't really more expensive than a Honda if you add up all the extra stuff you get in a Lexus.
If somebody needed all of the stuff that comes in the Lexus, then it would be a perfectly valid argument. Compare the base Lexus to the cost of the Honda + dealer installed acessories.

It seems to me you're using every excuse just to avoid admitting that the PS3 is a better value for some people. If you want the extra features, the PS3 is cheaper. If you don't, the Xbox360 is cheaper. I fail to see how the argument is stupid.

Actually, MS has already stated that there will not be any games in HD-DVD format, and you can bank on nearly all the PS3 games being on plain DVDs. I'm sure you'll see some on blu-ray at some point, but unless they really need the space they will be on DVD because it will be cheaper to do so.

Yeah, I'm sure some people will need the wireless adapter, but you actually don't even need to buy that $100 adapter. You can always just get a bridge for less. One of my friends has his 360 set up that way. Also, the controller that comes with the premium system (which is used in OP) is wireless.
