Interesting spin: what kinda computer did you build your parents?

Athlon 1.2
512mb Sasmsung PC3200
Asus A7V400-MX
80gig Seagate Barracuda IV
LG 48x CDROM
Hauppauge PVR 250 (in their computer since they barely use it)

The "Family" PC:

Athlon 2800XP (requested by father)
Gigabit something-or-other mobo
512 mb Kingston DDR 2700 (two sticks of 256)
40 gig Western Digital
Samsung DVD+- RW drive
some offbrand 17 inch LCD

I didn't design most of it.. i just get called in to service it whenever I stop by

they have an IBM Aptiva from '96 that used to be my primary machine in college. It's a P166MHz or something like that. I learned so much from it for real.

ha! That's what my parents have except theirs used to belong to my best friend who got it when he started hs. He passed it along when nobody else in the family needed it. Its been turned on all of once in the last year I think.

A gateway 2GHz with 768mb or ram and a Nvidia 440 video card. I just upgraded their hard drive and stuck in some more ram as well as cleaned up all the juck and spyware. I am the tech support for them

I've just come back from setting up a small LAN connecting through a 4port DSL modem/router.

Their 'main' file server/web hosting comp is:

AMD 900mhz
MSI something or other board
512mb 333mhx ram
1x 3Gb, 1x4GB, 1x 120gb
Generic DVD RW
Geforce 2mx 32mb

the others are old school throw-outs (PII 450 320mb & P233 128mb).

Built them a nice sturdy little machine.

AMD 1700+
Asus Board (don't remember model)
512MB PC2100
Radeon 9200
DVD/CDRW combo

Got my dad a 2.2 ghz Celeron for $40 thats $40 from Staples, and my mom has my old 1.2ghz athlon... guess I could give her my old dual athlon mp system, but I think her head would explode.

Similar to what I built my parents with a nice lil' Enermax case.

Same here. My MIL still manages to phone me up and ask me why her "icon doesn't work". What icon? "You know, that one that (makes my junk mail go away/makes ebay go/saves my files/looks like a diamond/opens my christmas list/I click for pictures)." WTF? It's almost invariably a button within a program that she's talking about that she somehow managed to hide or that she doesn't dial up to her ISP before trying to download her mail or something. Argh.

I built my dad this back in 2001:

ASUS A7V133
Tbird 1.4GHz
512MB PC133
40GB WD
TBSC
ATI Radeon 64 VIVO
Liteon 24x CD-R/W
some Inwin case with a 300W psu
WinXP Home Edition

He's still happily using the computer today, only one support call. Oh and for his bday this year I gave him a Leadtek TV2000XP, he installed it himself. I'm rubbing off on him. 🙂

They have my old laptop. A Gateway 450x with a 2.0ghz P4m 30 gig hdd 512mb of ram and cdr/dvd combo drive.

Asus A7V
Amd Athlon 900
256MB RAM
Voodoo3 (farewell my beloved card)
13GB
huge-ass monster black server case

I need to upgrade my parent's computer, or at least reinstall windows. They are a Duron 850, 256 megs of ram. I don't even remember the other stuff, it's been so long. But, the computer is SLOOOOOOOOOOW, mainly because my mom has messed the computer up with so much spyware. I really need to wipe the computer and reinstall XP.

I'd really like them to get a new Dell or something that they don't have call me. I got a call from my mom the other day telling me her "email doesn't work." So now I have to go fix it for them. It was fine when they lived like 5 minutes away. But now they live an hour away, so if the computer is jacked, they don't use it until I manage to make it out there to fix it.

I bought my parent's a Dell P4 1.8 with 512 RDRAM a couple years ago. It's still "too much" computer for them since they just surf the web.
