Interesting Far Cry experience

Can't wait for Crysis. :D

I got bored the other day and decided to fire up some Far Cry. Also being able to temporarily play on an 640mb GTS (long story) over my 7900 GT which is being rma'd.

Here is what I did...

1. Started a new game, realistic mode.
2. Removed HUD and crosshair.
3. Gave myself all weapons and unlimited ammo.

The result graphically is very nice, a clean, clear screen, which compliments the beautiful graphics of the game.

Without a HUD, the game can be difficult at times because no matter how many enemies you easily take out from afar with a sniper rifle or a rocket launcher, there seems to always be some stragglers around. It is a big area, and without the ability to track them using the binoculars, you are more likely to be seen first, and at a close proximity. This is where the realistic mode kicks in. Not to mention the lack of a crosshair.

Overall it is not terribly difficult, but it is fun having all the weapons and unlimited ammo.

Oh, and...

Wow, that is gorgeous. If Far Cry continues to look this good, imagine how long crysis will continue to look stellar. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it too, but I'm just now able to run FarCry to its maximum potential, I think it will be many years before I'll be able to do the same with Crysis :)

Actually, I think those with even single higher-end DX10 cards and Vista will get a very pleasurable experience. DX10 offers a lot of efficiency.

There is a somewhat short DX10 gameplay video link on this page...

4th video, "DirectX 10 Footage"

Very impressive to say the least.

I'm going to have to replay FarCry too. I'm hoping my 7950GT will offer a decent Dx9 Crysis experience until I upgrade to a new GPU next year.

I'm planning to replay this too at some point this summer. I originally played it at 10x7 with HDR and no AA (on a 6800GT), but should be able to use higher settings now.

I want to use that extended content update this time though. I remember reading about some easy workaround to get that installed on 32-bit XP.

I've seen the video, do you think it's resolution is any indicator as to the resolution the game was run at? I'm sure I could get significantly better frame rates at 320*200 :)

One of the things I like best about FarCry is I can now play it at 2048x1536 and it still runs smooth.

Well, another thing about performance and Crysis, is that the game is coded to take full advantage of multi-core cpu's. I guess my thoughts are biased of my hopes, but with that and the efficiencies of DX10, I am thinking performance is going to be better than most of us imagined.

But I am reminded of Far Cry. It was released before the X800 and 6000 series of cards, and early adopters were playing with 9800 Pro/XT. The Pro was a popular card, and even so, neither it nor the XT could handle the game well at 1600x1200.

That I'm not sure of. The only real-world examples of DX10 we have as of yet are the Lost Planet demo and the DX10 CoH patch, both of which run like crap on even the most cutting edge hardware, and the visual improvements compared to DX9 are subtle at best.

Granted those are not 'native' DX10, but rather games upon which DX10 was tacked on, so who knows how 'real' DX10 will run?

One thing is for sure...I wouldn't trust the developers when they claim that Crysis runs like butter on current hardware. I remember that before Doom 3 came out, Id software claimed that it'd run great on a Geforce 3...and we all know how that turned out.
