Interesting E-Bay/Paypal problem

Long story short:

Sold a laptop on E-Bay, the winning bidder hasn't bought anything in several months, and I noticed his bidding activity included a few bids on other laptops as well at the same time. Payment showed up in my account immediately. Just out of habit, I immediately withdrew the money into my checking account. (That step may come bite me in the ass later, as you'll see)

Then I noticed the address is unconfirmed. Uh oh. I tried sending him a message, seeing as how the payment came through right away, and haven't heard back yet.

So let's assume the worst and assume this is somehow a scam, likely the idiot had his birthday as a password or something and got his paypal account hacked. What can Paypal do at this point? Can they go into my bank account and just re-withdraw the money? Because if not, I'm just going to insure the thing and get a tracking # and send it, and Paypal and that guy's credit card company can fight it out. If they CAN just go into my account and just grab whatever they want, then I guess I'd better reverse the payment and hope the runner up will take a second chance offer.

Seriously, WHY do I keep selling there? This happens literally every single time. Usually the winning bid is clearly bogus though because I get a message saying "My paypal account is broken I will send a money order for 3 billion dollars instead" or I get one of those spoofed Paypal pages. This is the first time I've ever actually fallen for it.

You've never had even one successful transaction go through? I doubt that. If that were the case, you are an idiot for using the service over and over again after failing to ever sell anything successfully.

Or maybe you should stop using the word "literally" when you arent supposed to.

Yeah that's right, I said I've never had one successful transaction go through. Or, wait, no I didn't. I said every winning bid for a laptop I've sold has been bogus. Usually it's very obviously bogus, I promptly ignore it, and send second chance offers down the line until somebody takes the thing. Hence the transaction goes through, and it's just more of a pain in the ass than it should be.

Don't worry though, your complete and utter lack of reading comprehension probably won't prevent you from going places in life.

I just don't want to wait too long because the lower bidders will have moved on before too long and I'll have to re-list the damn thing again. But yeah, you're probably right. Like I said, I'm mostly curious to see what Paypal can do about it if I've already yoinked the money out of the Paypal account and sent it off to my bank.

Uh, sorry, but I have to ask why your reply was so harsh? You most certainly did NOT state that "every winning bid for a laptop I've sold has been bogus." You stated, and I quote, "This happens literally every single time." There was no other part to your sentence, and nowhere in that paragraph did you even mention the word laptop. I had the exact same impression from reading it as akshatp did.

Since your checking account is linked to Paypal, it is possible for Paypal to put a hold on those funds if the "buyer" issues a complaint. Or at least, that is my understanding of how it works. Personally, I have long since abandoned Ebay because of nonsense like this.

You got the same impression because you apparently also lack the ability to use common sense. If you want to play the "exact wording" game, where exactly is it that I said I've never had a single transaction go through? Hmm??

And my reply was a bit harsh because the quoted post was a bit harsh. If that offends your tender sensibilities, perhaps you should find a different message board to post on. I hear there's a great one on Dora the Explorer's home page.

You seem to be upset that two people failed to understand your meaning. Yet if two different people came to the same (apparently incorrect) conclusion from reading your posts, maybe it is your ability to communicate clearly that is in question here. You state that you are selling a laptop at the very beginning of your post. You then proceed to talk about how it is possibly a scam, that you haven't heard back, etc etc. After that, you ask, "WHY do I keep selling there?" Again, no mention of this being exclusive to laptops (eg. "WHY do I keep selling laptops there?") Then you state, "This happens literally every single time." If you were only referring to laptops, this would have been a logical place to state that. It's good practice to reiterate your specific subject (in this case, "laptop") every time it is brought up in a paragraph, rather than making the assumption that everyone understands that your general statements are, in fact, meant to be specific.

You ask "where exactly is it that I said I've never had a single transaction go through?" At no time did I claim you said such a thing. I did, however, state that I received that impression due to your wording.

Regardless of your intended meaning, I still have to point back to your own question you asked of yourself - if this has happened repeatedly, "common sense" would suggest that you probably shouldn't be trying to sell anything on Ebay anymore. If scams or failed payments represented only .001% of Ebay, it wouldn't be so bad, but in your case (and you're not alone), it is an alarmingly high rate.

Ebay sucks complete ass. In addition to the ridiculous fees, they also put complete burden of proof on the seller.. The place is heaven for scam buyers.

They need to have an option for sellers to accept payment from confirmed addresses only.

Never mind, the guy got in touch with me. It was a legit bid. Also, incidentally, Paypal's terms of service (which have been posted by seemingly no less than 11 trillion indescribably angry former Paypal customers) do state they reserve the right to reverse fraudulent payments and debit the linked account for any money transferred into it. So they could have just taken the $ back.

As for you, Mcturkey, I don't have any beef with you. My first post wasn't entirely clear and I don't deny it. akshatp's reply, however, assumed I was an idiot and wasn't terribly polite to boot and therefore didn't deserve a polite reply. That's the way it works here in ATOT land, best get used to it.

Throw me in the gruop that doens't have any common sense b/c I too failed to infer that "literally every single time " meant only for your laptops.

There, now the sentence in question makes sense. Good night.

Paypal most certainly can (and will) debit your account when the payment turns out to be bogus. Even if you clear out the account so they can't take the money back out of it, they will come after you to try and collect, including using a collection agency and messing with your credit. Paypal is a terribly risky thing to use, it offers you as the seller very little protection in that scenario.
