Perhaps this was one situation in which he should have stayed back. AK47 > concealed handgun. The fact that he was carrying did not directly result in his injury; his attempt to intervene did.

You know, you'd think cop cars would have at least one rifle and shotgun, just in case...never hurts to be prepared. It seems to me that cops should be BETTER armed than your average criminal, not equally well-armed...and less armed than the real psychos.
