Intelligence in college kids is abysmal these days.

I'm sitting here, alone, on a Friday night, and find myself grading papers for my Motivation (Psychology) class. The more I read, the greater my frustration with my students, who are all juniors and seniors, becomes. They have no sense of spelling, grammar, or coherency. These are major mistakes, not miniscule. An example:
Case studies have been done to single individuals who draw general conclusions about behavior. This is common for a individual come across or couples face such as marriage.
I'm losing my mind. I cannot believe that these kids have made it this far in college writing crap like this. What the hell is going on in high schools? Obviously, it is not learning.

College kids, have always, been dumb, are dumb, and always, will be dumb.

At least, they're not, staying home, alone on, Friday, nights, grading, papers.

Wow thats horrible. The kids who really belong in universities are stuck in run-down community colleges, while all the jocks and potheads go to state on daddy's dime.

One of my friends in senior year of high school did so poorly on one paper (written literally ten minutes before class) that our teacher wrote, "Is this ebonics?" at the top. She wasn't seriously asking, because a) he was a white kid, and b) she's not that stupid.

For example, his opening sentence was, "Henry be very worried," and every sentence followed suit. I laughed so hard that I ran to the library and made copies of it. It's been quite some time since then (I'm beyond college), so I doubt I still have it. Still makes me smile, though.

This is why I cannot stand group projects in college, especially when they involved a paper. In the end, I write the whole damn thing because no one else can write worth a crap. It really is pathetic.

I had to drink heavily whenever I graded lab reports for intro chemE lab.

Many times I felt like screaming, "<Jules> English motherfvcker!! Can you write it?!? </ Jules>".

You can blame a school system that is affraid to grade strictly, where everyone gets A's and you can hardly figure out who deserves them. Couple this with affirmative action/minority incentives and you dumb down the whole system.

What pisses me off is that I had to take the "english prep" class before I could take my english 1 class because I didn't pass some stupid essay test. The teacher even asked me why I was in the class after she read the first paper we all had to write.

All because instead of making a connection between a story about ants to communism, I decided to write about how they were in fact superior to humans in that they acted towards the greater good of the colony while humans were inherently selfish and how our intelligence is merely an excuse to destroy our surroundings. Whoever graded it must not have liked hippies or something.

EDIT: At least the engineering major had an excuse. :D

It is a junior level psychology class, but there are different majors taking this class. From the first page of the roster I can see a chemistry major, a business major, an engineering major, a physics major, a philosopy major, and an english major.

I hope you are grading them accordingly.
Otherwise it is all a waste of time for them as well as you.

The English major is the worst one, isn't she?

Tell them they will fail at life. Writing is a basic skill you learn in high school, and polish in college.

I always wrote coherent papers. Even when I wasn't an English major, my papers were thoroughly thought-out. Maybe this means more job opportunities for me with my contemporaries sliding down the intellectual ladder? I submit that this is good news to me.

The average is hovering around a 60% right now.
