The locked i7 7700 is such a bad buy right now.

Yes. Its a bad new buy today considering how much it costs. However, if price falls to ₹ 13,000 or less before GST than that is still a good price for an amazing CPU.

I use this CPU which I purchased due to its 65W TDP and because I found this to be enough for my needs. All core Turbo is at 4 GHz. For my 1080p @60 FPS gaming, I have not faced a single bottleneck.

For someone like me, I will still prefer to buy a 65W Core i7 8700 instead of 8700K as I do not overclock.

Welp, just bought a 7700K. 279.99 at Microcenter (plus 30$ off with a matching mobo). Didn't open it yet, though... Should I wait till Monday? I've sold my 3770K rig today and need a new build ASAP...

Do your requirements call for maximum single-threaded speed? Or multitasking / threaded power?

If it's the former, then good choice. If it's the latter, you've done screwed up, boy, and should have picked up a Ryzen 7 1700X for the same price. It has twice the number of cores and threads, and outclasses the 7700K in multithreaded software.

He posted what software he is going to use, and for the one piece of software that benchmarks are readily available for, 7700K outpaces Ryzen significantly.

Didn't you know?...unless your machine is 100% for 1080p gaming, buying intel is not tolerated here.

Dont the Ryzen and Threadripper fanboys have a thread of their own instead of crapping in this one?

Trolling and flamebaiting is not allowed, also insulting people.

i7-8550U is a Coffeelake variant. Laptopmedia is unaware of this (like most people).

If that i7-8550U is a true quad-core, then why doesn't it have "Q" in the model number string?

Like the i7-XXXXH, versus "HQ". People look for the "Q" on mobile SKUs, to know that they're getting a true quad-core i7, and not some watered-down "turbo dual-core" variant.

Because they are made for ULV SKUs as a replacement for today's i7-7500U etc. KBL-R is a SoC unlike the higher TDP HQ mobile. This is known for so long time, no idea why most people don't get it. Even Laptomedia and wiki pages are always wrong on this.

AMD's Pinnacle Ridge has to really up the game, if they want to keep/expand upon the market share they got with Ryzen. While 4 GHz boost is OK against 4 core 7700K (offset by more cores on), IMO they really need to hit about 4.4-4.5 Ghz boost to be relevant in ST workloads against the 8XXX series (preferably with minor IPC increases as well).

I'm just dissapointed, that, thus far, I can't just drop in a CoffeeLake i3 or even something higher, into my Deskmini mini-STX PC, because it has a lowly H110 chipset. Would like something newer, fresher, and faster, than my G4600 CPUs. (Not that they are any slouch, no sirree, they are quite snappy, even with an iGPU, for web browsing. I just want more e-peen, in a small PC.)

I mean, how hard would it be, to re-engineer the mobo, and make one with a Z270 or Z370 chipset? Sure, it would nearly double the price, I'm afraid, but it would at least make a powerhouse mini-PC, that competitors couldn't touch.

Confirms 6C/6T @ 2.8 GHz (3.8-4.0 GHz Turbo) for Core i5-8400. :D

Let's see how Core i5-8400, entry-level Core i5 from the new lineup (possibly <$200), stacks up against the venerable Core i7-7700K at stock...

- Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz (6C 3.81GHz/4GHz, 3.5GHz IMC/3.7GHz, 6x 256kB L2, 9MB L3)
Multi-Media Integer 581.86Mpix/s
Multi-Media Long-int 214.11Mpix/s
Multi-Media Quad-int 1.91Mpix/s
Multi-Media Single-float 450.31Mpix/s
Multi-Media Double-float 256.77Mpix/s
Multi-Media Quad-float 10.26Mpix/s

I would like to point out, that i7 7700 has 3.6 GHz 4C/8T layout, and most likely, lower throughput than i5 8400.

;)

I just cannot wait for 35W CPUs. January cannot come fast enough.

Well, after years of waiting to upgrade, I think the i7-8700K is going to be the path I choose for my main PC (assuming the leaks are true, which I have little reason to doubt). I was very close to pulling the trigger on a 7820 or 7900 but for the price difference, I can buy the 8700K and most (or in the case of the 7900, ALL) of an 8 core Icelake if I need to upgrade again sooner than anticipated.

I say this as a Skylake-X owner: you're probably making the right choice.

CFL-S is really looking to be quite something.
