The average user probably isn't even aware that C2D also has the same TLB errata quietly fixed in microcode. And yet I was surprised just how well AMD's TLB was marketed and publicized.... by whom and for what reason, I haven't a clue.

Maybe there should be a handsome reward given to the first 'desktop' user to fully isolate and document the bug, at least I've never seen it attempted. Or maybe this further serves to demonstrate just how innocuous and benign this bug truly is. Kind of deflating though, when rumors become larger than life and dictate over simple common sense.

Performance hit with patch
http://techreport.com/articles.x/13741/4

Anyway, you can use it without the patch until the thing really occurs... Its not serious to have a L3 TLB bug, but the problem is it reduces performance when the patch is applied, on the other hand, Intel's L1 TLB bug is corrected without performance hit. You cannot complain when you can get it $150 cheaper, which can almost buy you a decent mid range graphic card. What is the price of 9650? Is it more expensive than 9600?

wtf are you talking about. if the supposed C2D bug was fixed in ucode, nobody would have heard about it outside intel validation. the K10 bug was a legitimate post-qualification escape and that's why there was such a big shitstorm. quit your fudding.

Don't you remember the Microsoft patch released for the C2D TLB bug?

save and get the Phenom. The so called TLB bug won't affect you. Also if OP wants a quad why are some of you insisting that he gets a dual? He will play just fine on this quad, the 9600 won't bottleneck his 8800GT.

Because he only games and watches movies?! What good would a quad do there?

An E8400 would destroy a Phenom 9600 (and Q6600) in games. If he wants to save some money, an E7200 would be the best bet, and would still provide better gaming performance than both quads whilst costing significantly less.

Get the AMD and use the $150 on an external USB drive or some peripheral (or software) you want but wouldn't have been able to get with the Q66 machine.

I do agree that a faster dual core Intel would serve you even better but that wasn't one of the 2 system options.

he's just considering two Gateway machines, one with a Q6600 and another with a 9600. He saw both at a retail store and he never mentioned a 3rd one with a dual.

We all know that a E8400 would destroy both quads (not a brilhant discovery) so my point is helping him picking the best rig between the two he mentioned.

Nobody here is mentioning a more serious issue, that he may have trouble running his 8800gt on the Gateway psu.
