Intel Pentium D 940

I just switched from an D 820, to the D 940.

Is the new 9XX D's that much better than the old?

Or should i have just got with the amd x2's?

they are the exact same as the old, jsut on a smaller process so Intel makes more money for each one you buy. They might be better at overclocking, but if you're not gonna overcloc the chip then its the exact same.

The new 900 series is much cooler, and has increased* cache. Some guy over at XS got his 920 (2.8 GHz) up to 4.1 GHz on stock voltage with load temps in the low 40Cs. Overclock it, I'm sure it's a good processor.

the cache is the exact same latentcy as before, and the chip is only slightly cooler, though it does have twice the cache which means the 65nm process is a little bit better then it seems since there are alot mroe transistors.

Doesn't the 9XX series have some virtual OS thing? I'm pretty sure it has. Pacifica? Or is that the AMD name?

only a very few people will ever use it though, so you should only consider it if you really need it. Of course if you do need VT then you pretty much gotta go Intel

I've seen the overclocks on the 920..............are there any higher model overclocks. Also how much will i cut the life off of this thing if i were to overclock it to 3.5ghz - 3.7ghz?

Theres no conclusive evidence that clocking it higher than stock speeds will shorten the lifespan of the CPU. Raising the voltage well above stock is another story.

ok well thats good news then. What do you guys reccomend as an overclock for me with my stock cooling. I dont wanna overclock it so much to the point where i have to upgrade power supply and switch to liquid cooling.

My near immediate plans are to purchase 4gb (1gb sticks) of crucial value ram

And maybe going with a bfg 7800gt pcie 256mb (getting a good deal on it too good to pass)

7800GT= good idea, but what are you doing that you are going to use 4gb of ram?? For most things thats a complete waste. 2GB of ram is more than sufficiant for almost anything that will be running on a desktop system.

Well, judging by the size of the HSF of the Presler OCed to 4.26; its not clear at all that the TDP is under control; but rather, it seems to be only managed with extreme measures:

Well, I have helped a friend to OC a 3000+ winchester to 2.7 with stock cooling, which is about a 50% increase in clock speeds; does that answer your question?

Yeah, but this is DELL insuring a 800mhz overclock on a P4, thats a huge overclock for a company like Dell to insure, and this is a dual core P4 ere talking about, it puts out WAAY more heat then a winchester to begin with.

By the way cooling is pretty good on the case i have, its a btx case and i cant even hear the processor or fans. But if i stick my hand in front of it i can sure as hell feel it suck. And dont get any ideas guys.

Can you even overclock with your Gateway anyway?? Normaly thats not possible..

Why wouldnt it be possible? You can overclock dells.
