Great pics! I really liked the NUC vs. Old gen Mac Mini.

NUC mainboard vs. LGA push-pin desktop cooler:

That's ridiculous :D

That's crazy small....The future looks to bring a lot of power in small spaces.

Currently Newegg has $10 off w/ promo code INTE0102, limited offer available on this.

Question - anyone know how/if its possible to use these boxes as a widi/miracast receiver/sink? I know the chipsets have the capability to **send** over widi/miracast according to intel's site.

These NUCs are so small, I don't see a reason to invest another $25-$100 for a widi/miracast receiver stick. I can attach a NUC with velcro to the back of my TV, hook it up with HDMI, and then I **would like** to be able to just wirelessly beam music and mirror the display of my phone to the TV via the NUC.

if you're not using the mounting bracket holes on the back of your HDTV, the NUC comes with a bracket that attaches to those holes.

2 new models announced:

http://techreport.com/news/24178/new-cheaper-intel-nuc-coming-next-month

To paraphrase:

The first one is due in February and will have a slower 1.1GHz Celeron 847 processor (no Hyperthreading and 1MB less cache) as well as lower-clocked graphics. It's expected to cost $100 less, so we're probably looking at $199. This would be the ideal parent/grandparent/kids box - probably not great on video playback, but just fine for basic Internet surfing and word processing. Hopefully the SSD prices will drop soon!

The second one is due in April and will have a Core i5 and is slated to have vPro capabilities, USB 3.0, and triple-display support.

Intel hinted that a Haswell-powered edition with more onboard functionality will be out later this year, and that the company is "going to go big" in the future. Although personally, I would be pretty dang happy with an i5 NUC that can boot off a USB 3.0 external hard drive ;)

Holy cow, Gigabyte just announced a customized NUC with an i5 or i7 plus USB 3.0, shipping in April:

http://liliputing.com/2013/01/gigab...igns-mini-desktop-with-up-to-core-i7-cpu.html

They say it maxes out at 8GB RAM, but I'm sure it will support 16GB. I also think the article mislabeled the HDMI inputs and outputs, it should be dual HDMI outputs unless Gigabyte really went crazy with the mods, haha. So an i7 + 16GB RAM + 480GB Mushkin SSD in a little tiny package would be super awesome :awe:

Yeah, such a great idea. And if your TV is already mounted on the wall, Monoprice sells ridiculously cheap VESA wall mounts, with everything from tilt to swivel to extend. They even have one that bolts directly to the wall for a mere $4:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10828&cs_id=1082807&p_id=6520&seq=1&format=2

Sort of like the Mac Mini in this setup, although if your existing TV VESA mount extends far enough, you could just mount it directly behind the TV to hide it, but still give you easy access to the power button:

Looks like there are some clear plastic ones that might work too, like the Wii mount from HideIt Mounts:

Any ideas on mounting this to a wall (hidden behind wall-mounted TV) without putting holes into the wall? I was thinking 3M Command Adhesive of some kind (maybe the velcro variety to make it easy to remove when needed).

That sticky stretchy putty stuff should work fine, holds like 5lbs.

As a joke once I stuck a toaster to the wall upside down with 2 strips of that stuff.
Unfortunately you have to stretch it to get it off clean and I covered it so you couldn't...ended up tearing the paint and paper off the sheetrock.

The 480GB mSATA Mushkin drive is out. Newegg has it for $449 ($50 under MSRP):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226379

Just as a reminder, the i7 NUC from Gigabyte is due out in April:

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/gigabyte-shows-off-an-extra-tiny-desktop-pc-with-core-i7-due-in/

I'm curious to see how this competes price-wise with the Mac Mini. Apple sells it for $599, but they also have an i7 version with dual drives etc. The i3 NUC is nice because it's relatively cheap ($299 + RAM/SSD), so you can do a budget mini PC pretty easily.

the latest bios, 36, apparently allows the fan to run faster, thereby allowing the cpu to run cooler.

with previous bioses, my thunderbolt NUC's fan ran at around 2050 rpm, and the cpu's ran high 60's to low 70's, which is still well within the allowable range.

however, bios 36 has the fan running about 800 rpm faster, and the temp is 10-15 C lower.

there is no perceptible fan noise, at least from a foot or more away.

A dual-core Sandy Celeron should be fine for 1080p video playback and video streaming services. Should be interesting at $199.

Mom and dad's old desktop might be biting the dust, might replace it with a NUC just to see what it's like.

Hi,

I have BRIP Movies on PC1 Running SSD/Corei7/12GBRAM. Now does anyone stream 1080p over Cat6 Gigabit Port on NUC? Does VLC Stream fine or chokes on NUC with that setup ?

thanks in advance

whats the bitrate? is your receiver capable of pass-through (sound conversion takes enormous cpu power).

many folks can do 1080p but if they have to downmix DTS-MA to analog out - that kills it.

We want to use this machine as Data Logging. Can we run it on battery? Any idea?
TIA

This is the same as a standard computer, just lower-power (32 watts max, I believe). So you could run it on a UPS, but not for too long!

haha, what the heck - Intel's current promotion is a free $29 Etch-a-sketch featuring skulls silkscreened on the knobs:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16800995144

Available on both models:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856102002

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856102001

"Free Etch-A-Sketch with purchase, limited offer" :D

I just saw that offer when I checked on it and thought "well that's random". Now that I see the design I'm on full blow "what in god's name is going on over there "
