Intel N3710 vs AMD A9-9410

I'm looking at a few budget laptops and I see these 2 options.

I tried finding some benchmarks to compare the two but couldn't locate any.

Is one remarkably faster than the other?

I find it ironic that AMD originally picked their numbering scheme of whatever the intel core i series was +1 (at the time they stopped at A8), now AMD and AMD marketing reps to brick and mortars flat out stated that the cpus on a comparable i series was faster, but the more important thing was the better graphics which they state lead to a better experience.

Then when new amds came out they moved it to A10 to show new cpus are better than the A8 cpus. AMD was barely competive back then when llano came out, but it is now a sad twist of fact that A9 is being compared to atom and look how little we have advanced on AMD effective cpu progress since 2011. Sure odd A numbers are a new thing, but under the logic of the old naming scheme this just does not make sense.

I can't wait for Zen, not because I want a new cpu, but because the last 5 years have been so disappointing from a formerly great company. Bulldozer stank so badly, and the nodes AMD had easy access to have been on 28nm and 32nm for so long.

That said looking at the benchmarks it is loads better than atom. It is a single module dual core but due to its near 3 ghz base clock, and its 3.5 ghz turbo it is much faster than atom. It looks to trade blows with core-m on the cpu front depending on the cooling of core m. But this is a 15w part and not the tablet tdp core m was design for. But 15w is definitely ultrabook territory.

Bring on tsmc 16nm, bring on 14nm Global Foundry. To my understanding Zen for the most part was tapped out on TSMC first and AMD at the time was more confident on TSMC yields...that said the new AMD gpus are on 14nm Global Foundry.

I thought Intel's naming scheme was bad. AMD's is even worse, but still somewhat better than ARM's.
 
that A9 is a solid laptop chip
the i3-5020u in that ebay Lenovo has weaker single thread performance than the A9-9410

I would like to point out that AVX/AVX2 performance on Stoney Ridge should be somewhere in the ballpark of "awful". You are better off running SSE3, SSE4, or xOP where you can get it.

Effectively, that CPU has no support for those ISAs since it can not do them any justice. Binaries that require it can run without crashing. That's as good as it gets.

At some point it will be important for youtube and surely some other video oriented sites, laptop CPUs are too weak to be used as decoders, so the guy was adviced to buy a laptop that will be soon outdated for what is a generic usages.

I guess that it s what happen when people have no regard for anything else than a given brand, nevermind the actual usability, personaly i wouldnt buy currently a laptop whose APU/CPU is not H265/VP9 Main10 compatible, they are available, why shooting for previous gens..?..

Yeah, going to have to wait a long time then given the number of Core 2, Phenom II, and other processors out in the wild.

DT PCs have the ressource to use a dGPU and you know it, 120$ or even less for a soon to be released RX 460 and it s up to date in this register, not so much for laptops where the GPU/UVD part has been historicaly what decide of the product lyfecycle much more than the CPU, as you re aknowlegding it implicitely, and also contradicting yourself by the same token.

Best advice would had been to point to Bristol Ridge rather than Stoney R if he has 150$ more, as it s twice the core count with the same features that are still lacking in Intel s offerings untill KBL is released.

What video orientated sites? Torrents are exclusively x264 now. x265 is an edge case. It is far from mainstream. The only exceptions are standard 1/2 CD XviD rips using a decoder from 2001 and a potato can play those. All laptops suck and budget laptops suck the most. The difference in price is the degree of slowness. How many cheap laptops have a fat SSD, a decent 7200RPM HDD for a dump drive and a decent GPU backed by a CPU that doesn't blow? I didn't even mention the low res screens.

If you want a good laptop you need to spend a stack to have something with some speed.

If we buy a laptop only for "now" you would be right, if it s for a few years then one should pe more picky before making a choice that will end being the bad one, besides BRidge has also a H264 hardware decoder, and a recent one, this allow the laptop to not heat to deserts like temps, think battery time also...
 
So is anyone here willing to sacrifice some general purpose computing power to get an N3710 or A9-9410 with H265 support? That is the question. I know I don't care about it.

An i3-5020U will overall be the best choice between the three products suggested, and the discount is a good one. I hope the quality of the unit(s) being sold is top-notch, and I do wonder about that with it being an eBay sale. Caveat emptor and all that. With the units being "brand new" maybe that is not so much a concern.
 
It's me or we are seeing a final fight of the dying uarchs?

Atom and small Bulldozer won't be there next year to see that kind of fights. Kinda sad, but well... we will see the Celeron M as the new lowest tier.

Returning to topic. The A9 is intended to fight the Celeron U.
 
I run an n3700 laptop, it's perfectly fast enough for what I bought it for. Web browsing, basic office work, emails, editing etc.
