Interesting. I wonder how much power Kentsfield draws while overclocked. Seems like Intel took two E6700s, put them in a package and doubled the TDP. Hopefully that wont mean that 3GHz Kentsfields will have a 180+W TDP.

So does anyone know what the name of this chip is going to be?

It'll be an EE CPU, so Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme?

Is "Core 2 Quadro" really what it'll be called? It seems like that would be inviting nvidia to sue them, since they've had the "Quadro" line of workstation cards for some time now.

I highly doubt nVIDIA would do anything like that, now that they are getting into bed with Intel.

Plus Quadro literally means 4. It's like trying to trademark the words "Uno", Duo", or "Trio". :p

Interesting article. It looks like it will be a fun chip for the benchmark guys but little use to gamers right now. And that pricing should drive down the X6800 to affordable levels... well, we can hope anyway, lol.

if only they can make use of the additional cores for gaming...that would be sweetness. forget the ageia physiX card now! i think.

1333MHz vs 1066MHz FSB yields almost identical results. Doesn't seem to be too bandwith starved to me. I always thought the FSB would be a big limitation for QC. For once, it's good to be proven wrong. :p

*drools*

Those video encoding numbers are just plain scary. I increased my encoding performance between 4-5x with my E6400 from my Northwood 3.4. And the quad cores just blow away the Conroes in pure CPU intensive apps.

Some of those encoding numbers are pure rediculous! (in a good way)

I think I see my next upgrade :)

Wow, this looks like the main thang for HD content-creation.

Obligatory random question: What would be the top performer: this quad core Kentsfield or the dual-Woodcrest setup that Apple is selling as the Quad Xeon Power Mac (assuming they are clocked the same and everything else is the same)? Because that seems to be the ideal market for these Quad-CPU configs that Apple seems to target (media/content creators and artists).

All I know is I want at least one. The problem is, I have absolutely no use for one, much less two. I just upgraded to dual-core, even though I didn't need it.

edit: BTW, I'm considering giving up computers, and just taking up crack/meth. I'm pretty sure it would save me quite a bit of money.:D

I don't want to say AMD is in trouble....but it sure looks that way. I think Intel really did a good job of keeping aces up their sleeve. These quad core CPU's look like they will make all previous generations obsolete that much quicker..including AM2.

Interesting. Weren't the first batch of Kentsfield ES samples shown on XS at 2.4 ghz?

Actually Clovertown is just the Xeon version of Kentsfield. He's using a 2P system, so he's actually benching two Clovertowns *) Still impressive.

I'd give anyone an 8-ball for a E6400. Unfortunately, I don't have one. I have a Skt. 754 3700 (stock 2.4 Ghz, with 1MB L2) system, and a Skt. 939 4400-based system, along with an unopened Skt. 939 4000 (same specs as the Skt 754 3700). I'm sitting this one out, waiting until the dust settles, so to speak.

edit: I'm convinced, though, at least for the first 6-12 months, that I'd spend much less money, if my addiction were crack/meth.
