Cinebench 15 I can do... But the rest ? I have never run them, and have no idea where to download them. If you can link, then I can do that.

Oh crap.. I didnt think about that. It used to be bundled together in like a benchmark tool bundle? you used to be able to download it here on one of the forum posts? I think I remember there being a link in the l5639 x58 post from a year or so ago?I remember running those benchies when the l5639 and x5650 were the hot thing to get.If any of you guys still have that bench pack could you please post a link? Thanks!! 😉
 
I got the cpu in finally. Now I need to mount it, rip apart my old pc for the psu, do some testing, then finish my water cooling loop and run leak tests.

Well, I mis-spoke. That computer is winXP32, and can't even seem to install cinebench. I think its just too old.... I have a 4790K, a 6700K and a bunch of Xeon E5-2683' that can bench C15.

Let me know.
 
Bench testing was fine on the 8700k, so off with its head. Tomorrow I take the sandpaper to the IHS. I like to knock a little height off the part that touches the PCB to reduce any gap present to practically nothing, and also will be lapping the water block side. You can't really do that on the under side though. Not with the ridge. My iphone decided it was a potato when I went to take a few pictures though. I have a little more clean up of the black goop residue to do as well. Plastic razor blades (which I just learned exist a few weeks ago) are great for this. They're too soft to scratch the PCB, but hard enough to scrape off the goop.

After that prep, some liquid ultra, and a relid (hopefully tomorrow), I'll do another quick bench test, and then the final mount and finish the water loop/gut my old PC for video card and PSU. This build is too involved.

Are you using a single fan or dual fan on your 212 Evo?Also is you Fan speed going full blast?

No, because modern games aren't single threaded and the older ones that are aren't cpu bound anyway.You'll find that most modern games never stress the cores at 100% so the extra single threaded performance is less relevant.

That's not to say there's no difference between 6c/6t and 6c/12t in gaming but it's certainly not 20% in the vast majority of cases (it's often zero percent).You are better off spending the extra money on the GPU as the GPU does most of the heavy lifting as long as the CPU is sufficient enough to supply it (which both the 8400 and 8600k are certainly able to do)

Congrats on the delid. Hmm wish I had known about the plastic razor blades when I took the lid off my A10-7700k, ha!

So you're using CLU? I've been wondering if anyone has used Conductonaut instead, to see how it compares.
 
Yes. Due to ihs/die interface tim pump out tendency, I want to stick with something that I know works after the nt-h1 fiasco on my last delid, especially since I won’t be able to do any changes without draining the loop this time.

@4.8 (1.284v automatic) with the single 212 at 100% still no throttling. AIDA stability
The cores have weird spikes. They average ~72º but some of them have spikes of 81.

This is better than what I expected really; in fact I'm more worried about "Temperature 4" on my motherboard as it reached 79 and it just stays there while testing at @4.8, looks way high to me.

@Justinbaileyman what are your temps looking like on the Motherboard?

Hm, I think I am going to end up returning that chirping hard drive. Last night, I right clicked on the system tray and chose to edit the options. Normally, the blue window with the white gear will pop up for a second, and you'll then see the options window. That's how it worked on my i3-8100 last night. However, on the i7-8700k, it sat at the white gear part for about 15-20 seconds. I'm pretty sure I could hear the HDD working (chirping up a storm) while that happened.

Other than that, I got my GSkill DDR4-3200 in yesterday, and it works just fine with the motherboard. I'll admit that a part of me wanted to swap to the Maximus X Hero when I saw that the RAM is Aura Sync compatible. I don't really care about RGB, but a part of me likes it when things just work. And if the RGB is going to be on, I'd prefer it all be synced to display the same color and such. 😛

Apparently, I bought some Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra a while ago (I found it just yesterday), and I purchased some Conductonaut recently specifically for delidding. I'm practicing on the G4400 right now. I removed the IHS, but I've got some thoughts that are making me wait a tiny bit...
  • What's the best method for putting the IHS back on? I've seen some use super glue, but I've also heard that it's not really the best method, because if you remove the IHS again, you could damage the processor if the glue holds too well. I've also seen some use high-temp gasket sealant, but there are disagreements over how to put it on. Some apply it just like the original material (all the way around with a slight gap). I've seen some that just put a dab in all four corners (like they do with super glue). I've seen some people that say that you should use a syringe to put the sealant on to avoid putting too much on.
  • How do you know what's too much TIM? When you're dealing with a conductive TIM that's near sensitive electronics, you don't want too much. Since I'm pretty new to this stuff, I don't know a ton about its viscosity, and essentially, how much material looks right. I've also seen most videos put the TIM on both the die and the IHS.
I did buy some 1mm syringes to test with, and they'll be here today.

With my A10-7700k, all I did was leave the bottom "half" (it wasn't exact) of the epoxy on the PCB. You know, the black crap. It gave me a guide for reinstalling the IHS, and when I torqued down the screws on my NH-D14, it resealed the IHS onto the PCB. Downside: I used CLU between the lapped copper IHS (yes, I lapped it after I popped it off, for good measure) and my lapped NH-D14. The copper <- CLU -> copper bond was so damn strong that when I removed the HSF later, it took the IHS with it. I had to twist it off the NH-D14 with some pliers. The epoxy reseal was strong enough to make it easy to seat the IHS, but it wasn't as strong enough to keep the IHS on the PCB. So that's a good thing if you really want to pop off the IHS again in the future. It's a bad thing if you use CLU on lapped copper surfaces like I did.

As far as protecting elements on the CPU PCB from conductive metal TIM, most of the people I've seen use clear nail polish over all the resistors and other crap sticking up above the PCB near the die. I didn't, and I had to use a ton of CLU to get good contact between the die and underside of the IHS, and I still "got away with it" somehow. Maybe I was just lucky, or really precise.

As to how much CLU to use, I tried using a tiny amount (as per my experiences when using it between the IHS and HSF) which did not work. The underside of the IHS was not exactly even. When I put in a ton of it (as per the technique I saw in . . . idontcare's old Ivy Bridge delid thread, or whatever that was; why didn't we sticky that?) it worked.

Silicon lottery is expensive though, and not for me, however I understand why they get clientèle. What sort of specs are you looking for in yours?

I would have refused the play, amongst others, assassin's creed origins without my 6C CPU, but with my now having one, and the game releasing tomorrow and already pre-loaded, I'm sick with anticipation! Let's see how it fares - and if it uses all cores properly. Saw some excellent usage across all cores in the division and such scaling is a very satisfying and beautiful experience!

Not sure, I'll have to see what the bins are. I mainly want temps down and no throttling, anything over 4.8GHz is cherry as far as I'm concerned. I was going to wait, but memory prices are going up again and spooking me.

Sounds good to me! Yeah those RAM prices...ugh! I can't see myself switching anytime soon to be honest. Also, this Trident Z is the best looking memory I've ever owned! The perfect combination of aggressive and stylish.

As for my OC, I'd like 4.8 but 4.7GHz may be just as good for gaming and knows lower temps. Don't know how much of a benefit the additional 100MHz will be?

Dont know yet still in the middle of putting it all together.Also I guess I have no choice but to use my 212 Evo for now as well.Drove all the way to Green Bay to get my H115i this after noon and when I got there it was gone.... Some one snagged it before I could get it. So pissed off right now. Hour out of my way for nothing and that is an hour both ways!!
Getting ready to do a restore Windows 10 to default and install drivers. let you know when I am up and running..

This system will last me a while, like my Gulftown system has (hopefully, not quite as long). I will probably buy a chip binned at 4.9 or 5.0 GHz and run 100 MHz less than that. I want it cool because it will stay there for it's life. Probably getting an Asus Max Hero and G.Skill DDR (3200 Cas14 or maybe a bit better like IEC). I'll probably stick with my SSDs for now as I want to go for a 1TB M.2 (or 2x .5TB), which are terribly expensive right now (for top Sammy's).

Well now that im all all finished with my build I tested a few auto overclock settings and am pretty happy over all.
Right now I have it selected to extreme profile #1 which auto set my 8700k to 5GHz at 1.35v and I am getting 52c idle and about 80c max temp but am spiking to 85-87c on 2-3 cores but then quickly drops back down to 80c? This is when the cpu is under extreme full load using CPUZ bench tool.Only using a Hyper 212 Evo Plus. Not sure what everyone was talking about when they were claiming that the cpu gets hot and needs extreme cooling?Anyways I am going to change back the bios settings and run at stock speeds for now,not that I am worried about temps but just feel that the cpu is fast enough at stock speeds for me.
