Hi guys

I want a CPU for pure gaming.
not sure which one of coffee lake is the best for me
the 8700K has the best single core performance but
1- I'm not into overclocking
2- I have some temperature concerns
my PC will be running 24/7 and I play 5-10 hours a day and I don't want to be bothered by heat problems at any point

8700 8600K 8400
not sure which one is suitable for me
I prefer something doesn't run so hot and can be used with the stock cooler or 50$ cooler

what do you think

Do you have a high refresh rate monitor? If not, the 8400 would be plenty for gaming, and you could cool it just fine with an inexpensive aftermarket cooler (e.g. Cryorig H7 is $35 - I really wouldn't use the stock cooler for anything).

just 1440p + 144Hz gaming

how about i5 8600K

just 1440p + 144Hz gaming

how about i5 8600K

For 144Hz you'd be better off with the 8600K, because it will turbo (single core) to 4.3GHz vs 4.0GHz on the 8400, and all-core turbo to 4.1 versus 3.8... although I'm not entirely sure it's worth the ~$40 difference or not for the extra 300MHz, especially if you are bottlenecked at 1440p (depends on what GPU you are using). Also, it feels like a bit of a waste to get the K SKU if you aren't going to OC, but that's more of an emotional reaction. 😛

Or you could go with the 8700 if you can increase your cooling budget a bit for a higher end air cooler, or an entry level liquid cooler (Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 for instance is only $65 on Newegg, just $15 more than what you said you want to spend on the cooler). For me it's worth it for the hyperthreading versus the i5, but I'm not a pure gamer (the extra threads come in handy for video editing and the like).

Hey guys, I just got my 8700k, I have an Aorus Ultra Gaming board.
Anybody with it that has oc'ed that can give me a pointer on where to start for @4.7 all core stable? Its been a while since I've oc'd so I'd appreciate it, thanks !!!

I have a 8700k and a Gigabyte gaming 7, so should be pretty close to the same results. I can let you know more tomorrow as that is when I get to put mine together.Have to wait till tomorrow morning to get to pick up my Corsair H115i AIO otherwise I would have already threw it all together.. Believe me all that waiting, having to get this piece and that is driving me nuts.

Great! I'll await your results since I won't really have much time anyway till the weekend. I'm also going to be cautious as I'll be starting with an 212+.
Basically, I'm gonna push it as hard as I can without throttling with the 212+, and that will be my OC limit, and at that point, i'll buy a h100iv2.

I also have a 212 evo but I hear its no where near enough to cool one of these chips.

To me Cooler Master has always been inferior in their cooling capacity as compared to some of the other brands out there. To me they seem to aim more for a lesser, affordable solution. No offense; I've just worked with a lot of their products.

Yeah well I guess you get what you pay for when it comes to Heatsinks.Although Cooler master does have higher end air coolers but again it will cost more too.I would really like to see some bench marks between the x5650 or x5680 overclocked to 4.4Ghz vs a i7 8700k overclocked to 4.4Ghz and see how much improvement there really had been over the last several years..
Markfw do you by chance still have your x58 rigs that you could possibly throw some benchmarks up for us?

I got it cheap like 3 years ago and it has been great for the price that's why I'm using it, I know I won't get more than 4.8 ( luckily) on it, but that's really as much as I'd like to get anyway
I'll be buying the h100 regardless.

I don't think cooler Master is inferior if you take price into account thou

I am pretty sure some one around here claimed you couldn't even run stock settings on a 8700k on a Noctua u14 let alone a 212 Evo? Cant remember off hand who it was but they said something like there temps spiked to the upper 80's within seconds on stock settings and that there cpu would start to throttle like crazy? Is this really true because this is the whole reason I am buying a H115i in the first place.I wouldn't chance overclocking at all on a 212 Evo. Not that its bad, it just cant handle the thermal output.

not sure why I think i7 8700 is much easier to cool compared with i5 8600K and i7 8700K
maybe because of the fact that it comes with a stock cooler, implying that it doesn't require super good cooling ?! is this the case ?
also it has better single core performance than the i5 8600K

The Hyper 212 EVO has never been a high-end cooler, but to be fair, it isn't priced that way. It's pretty much priced like an entry-level cooler ($20-30), but performs well in its segment. That's why it's so popular. Honestly, I've used it on tons of builds, and my only complaints are that the pre-installed fan bracket is a little weak, and the second fan bracket doesn't have rubber pads like the pre-installed one.

Some users were mentioning that motherboards were setting higher voltage values (usually due to MCE), which could cause excess heat. Although, I wouldn't use an EVO for cooling an overclocked Skylake or Kaby Lake either. I mostly use it because it's decent cooling capability means that stock speeds usually require low fan speeds to keep at a decent temperature.

I wonder if the 212 Evo could cool a stock 8700k with fans running full blast? I just want to get this Rig put together already.I dont know if I should just say screw it and mount the tc14pe and hope its not to heavy or give the 212 evo a shot or what.Aikouka are you running a 212 evo on a 8700k and if so any problems out of temps.

You don't have the Phanteks cooler in your sig? Or is that different build?

EDIT: Nevermind, went back and read your post about the weight

Almost certain that all temp issues were because of MCE. I'm not willing to accept a k cpu requiring more than a 212+ to run STOCK ; Intel may be an asshole sometimes but that'd be too much

Yeah the Phanteks cooler was on my 1800x no problems. But the 8700k's pcb part of the cpu is like half as thin as my 1800x pcb was, and I have seen pictures and videos where people would use heavier heatsinks and it warped the sides or corners of the Skylake and Kabylake cpu's causing the cpu's pads not to make contact with the motherboards pins rendering the cpu useless.ever since I seen those pictures and videos I have become completely paranoid about larger heatsinks.

Can you share your thoughts on your Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Z370 board?
My brother is thinking of buying that board and Ive been in the Asus camp my last few builds so I haven't kept up with Gigabyte boards enough to tell him if its a good choice or not.
Does the dual bios feature save from bad flashes like the Asus flashback feature does?

Physically the board is great, the layout is excellent. Sturdy, looks good. Can't complain. What needs to be addressed though is some bios bugs. I have come across some bugs with the fan control in the bios where some of the settings you set are ignored. It's a bit annoying but should be fixed at some point.

Dualbios means it has two bios chips, one of which is a backup with factory settings in case you do something bad in the first bios

i5-8400 for a gamer that doesn't overclock.

Dont know how I feel about that tube coming out of the center of the Water block like that. Not sure my OCD will allow me to like it 🙂 No no J/K I actually really like that all white version..

Wow, yes, I have an I7 950 non-overclocked. Never turned on, but what benchmarks ? I can run some.

If you are talking about my Xeons on the SR-2, I sold that to @crashtech

Cinebench for sure and maybe Winrar or 7Zip Compress and Uncompress and the standard Anandtech Handbrake test. Pretty pretty please?? Thank you very much in advance!! Also I am guessing here that a i7 950 is a 4c/8t so I will disable 2c/4t on my cpu and I will run those tests tomorrow after noon and post my results as well assuming I am up and running with out issue's knock on wood.
