Hinton is just one guy - but maybe, just maybe, this is a hint of good things to come. @dmens and others have commented on the brain drain at Intel; reversing that trend would be a positive sign.

Don't count on it LOL. There is a big difference between the new CEO asking his old friend to come back, versus somehow luring back the hundreds of the best people they deliberately laid off in 2015-2016, many of whom I know vowed never to return.

Have you seen their margins outlook?

Also if you were not there in 2016 you would not understand the indignity these people went through. There is a matter of self respect that either no money or an insane amount of money can make up.

Indeed, i guess that he s of the usual Intel culture, after all he was there when Otellini was in charge..

Why did Intel let go of so many very talented engineers?

Normally you want to hang on to your best talent and let go of the average performers.

Also, if they were particularly talented, did the projects they were working on, get sabotaged due to management incompetence?

Yeah, it is quite a mystery why the CEO of one company, would want to work with the CEO of a near monopoly company, when they have shared interests in each other's markets. :rolleyes:

Long story short, the metric management decided to use to lay people off turned out to have less to do with merit and talent and more to do with politics and short term budgets.

Also, talented people work on failing projects all the time. The fortunes of individual projects at a snapshot in time is not a particularly good indicator of talent of groups of people.

I was talking more about like how VMWare's core product, the virtualization, isn't doing so great.
