What a change of heart with pricing
At one point Intel marketing tried to shove enthusiasts to X299 platform by releasing 4C unlocked CPUs as "entry point" for enthusiast platform and also nerfing PCIE counts for lower core count SKL-X CPUs. I bet these guys had black belt in artificial market segmentation and got a bonus or rise for this ingenious plan to milk customers further, by forcing customers to buy X299 platform. It is actually sad that Ryzen showed early and was so strong that they were not able to implement second step of their plan - ceasing to release K cpus for mainstream platform.
Now in the twist of the fate Intel actually needs HEDT to fight the ZEN2 monster and they have to price it according to AMD desktop platform. That must be a gravest possible insult for those marketing black belt guys mentioned above. I really hope AMD will turn the knife with properly executed TR2 reveal a day before Intel's NDA ends, now that would properly end 14nm era for Intel.
