Installing a hard drive in a Xbox 360 core

Is it possible? I know you can install a 2.5" in the PS3, but can you install your own drive in the Xbox 360? Or do you have to install the official Xbox one?

yes but it has to be a very specific hard drive and it's not worth the effort.

Specific drive? If I can find it, I'm sure it'd be a lot cheaper then the $40 MS charges for the 20GB...

I'm not sure how you think the HDD is on the 360, but it's in it's own special housing that clicks in to the top of the console. To get the HDD to even work you need that first a foremost, THEN you need a very specific drive, a way to format it properly for the 360 to see it which from what I read is a PITA and if it doesn't work properly you're screwed... as windows can't read the 360 formatted drives (last I checked). $40 is only 2/3 the price of a new game so I don't think it really is that bad.

I do a lot of modding so that isn't that intimidating.

I've found that exact 120GB model for $55 shipped, I think I'm gonna give it a go.

You know, you still need to buy the 20 GB drive to get the caddy.

Actually, he'll need to buy the 120gb drive to get the needed bin file with the security key.

Or he could download it off the Internets... and get banned. I seriously don't think the OP has thought this through, and is just assuming that his PC knowledge is going to carry the day.

definitely not worth taking the "cheaper" route in this instance. the possiblity of wasted effort (with the drive not working with an updated security key $55.00 not including time you spent) coupled with the possiblity of getting your console banned ($199.00). I agree with previous posters, suck it up and look on ebay for a 120GB hd. I've seen them on there for $100.00 - $120.00

too lazy for a new thread...

how hard is the dvd FW mod to play backups? I have a second 360 (damn you dell) that I cant sell and wanted to tinker.

You aren't as good as you think you are, OP.

Thanks, I'll take that with a grain of salt 😀

Modding FW (last I checked) is the quickest way of getting your console banned from live. If you know for a fact you won't ever use it online it might be worth it.

Aside from downloading demos and purchasing things from the MS store, and maybe some extra content, is there really an advantage to having a HD in the 360? Games don't actually use the HD this time around I thought. And you can just connect an external one with all your media and play through that.

Several advantages:
1) The HDD is used for caching
2) The Fall Update will allow you to copy an entire game to the HDD
3) You need the HDD attached to stream Xvid and Divx files
4) Game updates can be stored on a memory card but you're going to run out of room quick
5) 512MB Memory card - $49. 20GB HDD can be had for less than $60. 60GB HDD will come out at $100

Yeah I looked into it and its a bit ridiculous.

-Mod firmware on the dvd drive by connecting it to a computer
-dump iso's of games while dvd drive is connected.
-change something in firmware and put back in 360
-play copied games
-repeat if you want to backup new games

hopefully they have a "master disc" that will allow any game installed on the HDD (from the fall update) to be played. 🙂

I wouldn't do it...it's a console, I prefer to not mod mine...PC's yes, consoles NO.

well a modded xbox 1 was about the coolest thing ever made console wise. Hoping they can replicate that eventually.

Hmmm... I haven't done any research on this, but would it be possible to buy the 120GB HD and clone my current 20GB HD to it and replace the one in the caddy with no side effects? I'd like to have a ton of storage to copy games to.

get the transfer kit off ebay, or buy the 2nd one i have. (MS sends them for free if you have an elite + pro, and they sent me 2 for some reason)

I thought the clone kit would only work if I had bought the MS 120GB HD. I'm talking about buying a 120GB HD off the shelf, then taking my current 20gb out of the casing and replacing it with the 120gb model. I wouldn't have a way to transfer it then unless there was a pc utility or something that could do it.
